  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Returns from neck injury

Kwan started in center field and went 1-for-5 in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Blue Jays.

Kwan had missed the last two games -- Friday was a planned day off and Saturday due to neck stiffness. He was back in the familiar leadoff spot, but less familiar is Kwan's career-low .225 average and .310 on-base percentage. A Gold Glove winner as a left fielder, Kwan has added center field to his resume this season, but manager Stephen Vogt deflected questions Saturday as to whether the new position is affecting Kwan's bat. In addition to the career lows in average and OBP, Kwan is below normal in hard-hit percentage (9.2) and average exit velocity (82.0 mph), and his percentage of weak contact has more than doubled compared to last year.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Back in action Sunday

Kwan (neck) is leading off and starting in center field Sunday versus the Blue Jays.

Kwan didn't start Friday and was then a late scratch Saturday due to nick stiffness. However, the issue seems to have been minor given the outfielder's return one day later. Kwan will look to get back on track at the plate after going 2-for-18 over his previous seven contests.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: No injury concerns

Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt told Tim Stebbins of MLB.com the decision to rest Kwan on Friday after Thursday's off day was not due to health. Kwan eventually entered Friday's 8-6 win over Toronto in the ninth inning as a defensive replacement.

Vogt said he was looking to get Kwan a two-day rest and using the off day was a way to accomplish that. In a related discussion, the manager downplayed the impact of Kwan playing both left and center field this season on the outfielder's offensive production. "I don't think it's affecting his bat by any means," Vogt said. "I think it's just a new workload for him that he's never had in the big leagues." Kwan carried a .227/.315/.289 slash line through 25 games into Friday. For comparison, he slashed .343/.398/.505 over the first 25 games in 2025.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Scratched with neck stiffness

Kwan was scratched from the lineup for Saturday's game against Toronto with a stiff neck, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Manager Stephen Vogt said that Kwan's absence Friday wasn't due to an injury, but a neck issue will prevent the 28-year-old from playing in Saturday's contest. Angel Martinez will shift to center field with Kwan out, opening up left field for George Valera.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Hitting bench Friday

Kwan is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Blue Jays, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

  • Guardians' Angel Martinez: Not in Saturday's lineup

Martinez is not in the Guardians' starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Orioles.

Martinez will be on the bench for the beginning of Saturday's game after going 1-for-10 with five strikeouts over his last three outings. The Guardians will start George Valera, Steven Kwan and Chase DeLauter in the outfield from left to right.

Kwan went 0-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 6-0 win over Atlanta.

Kwan had a five-game hit streak snapped Saturday, but he managed to contribute to the offense. He walked, stole second base and scored during Cleveland's three-run ninth inning. It was the second steal of the season for the outfielder, who stole 21 bases (caught five times) in the 2025 regular season. Kwan is slashing .246/.338/.333 with three extra-base hits, seven walks, four RBI and eight runs through 15 games.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Hits rare homer

Kwan went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 4-2 loss to the Royals.

In 593 career games, Kwan has homered 36 times which equates to about one homer every 16 games. Homers aren't the strong suit of the 28-year-old's game, but he slugged his first of the year Monday against the Royals after having 11 last year. Overall on the season, Kwan is slashing .244/.326/.366 with four walks, six strikeouts, two doubles and three RBI.

The veteran outfielder knocked in the game's first run with a third-inning double and scored Cleveland's final run following a bunt single in the seventh. Kwan is off to a nice start to the campaign, slashing .318/.318/.364 through 22 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Gets first start in center field

Kwan started in center field and went 2-for-4 in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Mariners.

Kwan made his first start of the regular season in center field after being exposed to the new position during spring training. His move to center cleared the way for prospect CJ Kayfus to operate in left field.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Will play two outfield positions

Kwan will play both left and center field this season, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Kwan has rotated between the two positions all spring training, and manager Stephen Vogt confirmed over the weekend that the mixed deployment will continue into the regular season. The four-time Gold Glove winner in left field understands that playing center field will help the Guardians overall. Promising prospects, such as Chase DeLauter, CJ Kayfus and George Valera (calf), are best at corner outfield, so Kwan making left field available gives Vogt flexibility.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Good to go Sunday

Kwan (illness) is starting in left field and batting leadoff in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Athletics.

The 28-year-old was held out of the lineup Saturday due to an upper-respiratory infection but will make a quick return to the starting nine. Kwan has found his power stroke through 11 spring games with a double, a triple and two homers, resulting in a .947 OPS.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Battling illness

Kwan is not in the Guardians' starting lineup for Saturday's Cactus League game against the Padres due to an upper respiratory infection, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Kwan will likely sit out for the next couple of days while battling through his illness, but there's no indication that it will impact his availability for Opening Day. Kwan has been seeing more playing time in center field during spring training, and across 28 Cactus League games he has slashed .259/.355/.593 with two home runs and five RBI in 31 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' Steven Kwan: Position not affecting swing

Kwan started in center field and went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI in Monday's spring game against Kansas City.

Kwan belted a pair of two-out, two-run home runs for his first two Cactus League homers. A Gold Glove winner in left field, the Guardians are testing Kwan in center field, where he's played seven consecutive games. The experiment hasn't affected his bat. Kwan's batting .286 (6-for-21) over nine spring games. Moving Kwan to center field would grant up-and-coming outfielders like Chase DeLauter, CJ Kayfus and George Valera, all of whom profile better as corner outfielders, opportunities for regular at-bats.
