Criswell was placed on the 7-day injured list by Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday due to right elbow inflammation, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Criswell has spent most of the 2025 season at Triple-A but has appeared in seven games (one start) with the Red Sox, logging a 3.57 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB across 17.2 innings of work. He owns a 4-2 record, 3.70 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 68:28 K:BB across 65.2 innings at Triple-A and will now be unavailable for at least the next week.

Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Dispatched to Triple-A
The Red Sox optioned Criswell to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
Criswell fired seven innings of one-run ball Friday against the Astros, but he'll end up as the roster casualty necessary to make room for Dustin May in Boston's rotation. Criswell sports a 3.57 ERA through 17.2 innings with the Red Sox this season and would likely be the next man up if any of Boston's starters need to miss time down the stretch.

Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Goes seven strong in spot start
Criswell did not factor into the decision in Friday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Astros, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts over seven innings.
Criswell allowed just a solo homer in the second inning and otherwise kept the Astros in check, needing only 84 pitches to complete seven strong frames in his first start and seventh major-league appearance of the season. The 29-year-old now owns a 3.57 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB across 17.2 innings with the Red Sox, though Friday's outing was likely just a spot start with Dustin May in line to take the fifth spot in the team's rotation.

Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Starting Friday vs. Astros
Criswell will start Friday's game against the Astros, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
The right-hander was called up from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday and will step into Boston's rotation to fill the spot vacated by Richard Fitts' demotion earlier this week. Criswell, who's worked out of the bullpen in each of his six MLB appearances this year, has a 5.06 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB over 10.2 innings. The 29-year-old righty may be in line for just a spot start, as the newly acquired Dustin May is scheduled to start Sunday's series finale and could stick as the fifth member of the rotation over Criswell moving forward.

Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Receives promotion
The Red Sox recalled Criswell from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Criswell will provide some much-needed length in the Boston bullpen after starter Richard Fitts lasted only four innings in Monday's loss to the Twins before being optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. The 29-year-old righty has made six relief appearances with the Red Sox in 2025, allowing nine runs (six earned) with a 5:3 K:BB over 10.2 frames. Criswell had been starting at Triple-A could be a candidate to enter the rotation the next time Fitts' turn in the rotation comes up during this weekend's series versus the Astros.

Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Returns to Triple-A
The Red Sox optioned Criswell to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.
Criswell will return to Worcester after he was called up to serve as the Red Sox's 27th man Wednesday while Boston and Cincinnati resumed a suspended game from Tuesday before playing the series finale. He was expected to work in bulk relief in the second game of the day, but the Red Sox used five other pitchers before Criswell was called upon to record the final five outs of their 8-4 win. He kept the Reds off the board and gave up two hits during his appearance, bringing his ERA and WHIP to 5.06 and 1.78, respectively, through 10.2 innings with the big club.

Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Expected to be 27th man Wednesday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Criswell will likely be recalled from Triple-A Worcester to start Wednesday's game versus the Reds following the completion of a suspended game, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Brayan Bello had been scheduled to start the regularly scheduled contest, but he will be handed the ball in the earlier suspended game instead. That leaves Criswell -- who will added as the 27th man -- to start the nightcap, although it's possible an opener is used ahead of him. Criswell would be pitching on three days' rest after going five innings and throwing 87 pitches Saturday for Worcester, so he'd likely have a truncated workload against Cincinnati.

Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Serving as bulk reliever
The Red Sox recalled Criswell from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Criswell will serve in a bulk-relief role behind opening pitcher Brennan Bernardino in Wednesday's game versus the Reds. The right-hander went five innings and threw 87 pitches Saturday for Worcester, so he won't have a normal starter's workload Wednesday while pitching on short rest. Since Criswell is being designated as the Red Sox's 27th man for the day after Boston and Cincinnati resumed Tuesday's suspended game earlier Wednesday, he's expected to head back to Triple-A immediately after the contest.

Criswell served as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader with the Orioles but went unused in both contests. The right-hander hasn't made an appearance for the Red Sox or Worcester since May 8, but he could be a candidate to make a spot start or work as a bulk reliever for Boston against the Brewers on Tuesday, when the team will need to break in a temporary sixth member of the rotation due to a stretch of six games in five days.

Criswell made three appearances for the Red Sox out of the bullpen this season, but he's started in four games in Triple-A and could be part of the rotation while Houck is on the shelf. Red Sox's Cooper Criswell: Earns save Sunday
Criswell allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk over three innings during a win in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against St. Louis. He earned a save but did not strike out a batter.
It was far from an effective outing, but Criswell was credited with a save in the 18-7 routing of the Cardinals because of the three-inning rule. He coughed up four runs in the ninth inning, capped off by Thomas Saggese's three-run shot. Criswell owns an 8.31 ERA through 4.1 innings and is unlikely to see much high-leverage action moving forward.
