Wong gave the Red Sox an early lead with a two-run home run in the second inning. It was his first of the season and first since September 2024. He was an unlikely DH -- Wednesday marked just the third time this season he filled the role -- but the Red Sox carry three catchers and had Mickey Gasper on the bench if needed. Wong is slashing .270/.356/.393 with the one home run, 12 RBI, two steals and 12 runs scored across 33 games.

Wong rolled his ankle while attempting to catch a pop fly in the eighth inning of Wednesday's contest and was replaced behind the plate when the Sox took the field in the ninth. Wong (hand) took part in live batting practice Monday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Wong reported to camp last week and appears to be fully healthy after he underwent a carpal boss excision procedure on his right hand back on Oct. 9. The hand issue perhaps played a factor in Wong's dramatic drop in production in 2025, when his OPS fell to .500 over his 188 plate appearances after he had posted a .758 OPS the season prior. Carlos Narvaez ended up overtaking Wong on the depth chart, and manager Alex Cora relayed Saturday that Narvaez "earned the right" to be the team's starter heading into 2026, per Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald. Cora added that Wong's solid defense behind the plate should allow him to play more frequently than the typical backup catcher, and the 29-year-old could also be an option to make starts first base when Willson Contreras needs a day off.

The Red Sox and Wong (hand) avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract Thursday.
Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com says the deal is worth $1.375 million, with an additional $75,000 possible in performance bonuses. It was a disastrous 2025 season for the 29-year-old Wong, as he lost his starting job to Carlos Narvaez and finished with a .500 OPS and zero home runs over 63 regular-season contests. Wong -- who is expected to be recovered from October right hand surgery by spring training -- will be Narvaez's backup at catcher again in 2026.

Wong underwent a successful right hand carpal boss excision procedure Thursday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
A carpal boss excision involves the removal of a painful bony growth on the back of the wrist. The Red Sox did not reveal a rehab timetable for Wong, but the surgery is considered minor. Wong slashed only .190/.262/.238 over 63 games for the Red Sox in 2025, losing his starting job to Carlos Narvaez (knee). Narvaez had surgery himself this week, but both catchers should be fine for the start of spring training.
