Whitlock allowed a walk in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Rangers.
Whitlock hasn't been charged with a run over his last 6.2 innings, picking up two saves, four holds and a blown save in that span. He got the save chance after the Red Sox took the lead in the eighth inning. Aroldis Chapman was deemed unavailable due to a lat issue, which the Red Sox are approaching with caution. Whitlock has thrived as a reliever this year with a 1.78 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 58:8 K:BB while adding four saves, 25 holds and four blown saves over 50.2 innings. He should be in line for more save chances should they arise before Chapman is cleared to return to the mound.

Whitlock was called upon with Boston holding a three-run lead in the top of the ninth and made quick work of the bottom of the Angels' lineup. He tossed nine of his 15 pitches for strikes and retired all three batters he faced en route to earning his third save of the season. Despite the save, Whitlock should continue as the Red Sox's preferred setup option behind star closer Aroldis Chapman, who wasn't available Monday after pitching three times in the previous four days. Whitlock lowered his ERA to 1.88 with Monday's excellent outing and has held the opposition scoreless in eight of his last nine relief appearances dating back to Aug. 15.

Whitlock was reinstated from the injured list Saturday and put to work immediately in the eighth inning of a close game. The Red Sox led 2-0 at the time, which fits his role as a setup reliever for closer Aroldis Chapman, and picked up his 22nd hold. It turns out the closer wasn't needed as Boston scored four times in the top of the ninth. Whitlock will return to Boston's bullpen after spending close to the minimum amount of time on the injured list due to right elbow inflammation. The 30-year-old reliever never made any rehab appearances in the minors but still figures to immediately slot back in as the Red Sox's top setup man for closer Aroldis Chapman. Wyatt Olds was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Interim manager Chad Tracy said after the game that Whitlock has been dealing with a nagging elbow issue for a while. The 30-year-old right-hander is scheduled to undergo further evaluation Thursday, at which point the team may know whether he has to spend time on the injured list.
Whitlock earned the save in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning victory over the Mets, striking out one in a perfect 10th inning.
After Aroldis Chapman held New York scoreless in the bottom of the ninth inning, Whitlock got the call in the 10th after the Red Sox took a run-one lead in the top half. He'd set the Mets down on 15 pitches, stranding the free runner at second base to notch his second save this season. Whitlock has been excellent in the backend of Boston's bullpen of late. He's allowed just one run in his last 14 appearances (13.1 innings), posting a 0.68 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and no walks over that span. Whitlock will head into the All-Star break with a 2.18 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 37:6 K:BB across 33 innings this year.
Whitlock picked up the save in Monday's 6-3 victory over Washington. He allowed a hit and no walks while striking out two over a scoreless inning.
With Aroldis Chapman unavailable after pitching in each of the previous two days, per Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, Whitlock was called upon in the ninth inning and got the job done to secure his first save of the season. Since returning June 9 from a stint on the injured list due to left knee inflammation, the right-hander has allowed one run across eight innings with a 7:0 K:BB. Overall, Whitlock owns a 2.60 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 32:6 K:BB across 27.2 innings while serving as one of Boston's highest-leverage relievers, though he isn't likely to see regular save opportunities while Chapman is in the picture.

Whitlock is ready to take the next step in his recovery from left knee inflammation that led to him being placed on the 15-day injured list in late May.
