Mayer (illness) will start at shortstop and bat seventh Friday against the Mariners, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Mayer was originally left out of the starting nine because of an illness, but he now appears to be feeling better and will get the nod at shortstop, replacing Isiah Kiner-Falefa (forearm). Mayer's struggles at the plate have continued into June, as he's slashing .172/.265/.310 across 34 plate appearances since the beginning of the month.

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Held out with back/neck stiffness
Mayer is absent from Wednesday's lineup versus the Rays due to back and neck stiffness, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy is hopeful that Mayer will be available to pinch hit. However, with a team off day looming Thursday, the club could elect to stay away from Mayer on Wednesday with the goal of having him return to the lineup Friday, when the Red Sox begin a three-game set against the Rangers.

Mayer went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Twins.
Mayer singled in a run that gave the Red Sox a brief lead during Boston's three-run fourth inning. Sunday marked his first start of the season at shortstop, as he'll be the primary fill-in for the injured Trevor Story (abdomen), who underwent surgery and is not expected back until at least late June. Mayer, who entered the game on a 2-for-20 run, is slashing .214/.277/.577 over 47 contests.

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Will start seeing time at shortstop
Interim manager Chad Tracy said Friday that Mayer will start at shortstop Sunday against the Twins and will see extended playing time at the position while Trevor Story (abdomen) recovers from sports hernia surgery, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Story is expected to be sidelined 6-to-10 weeks following surgery Thursday, and the Red Sox have been using multiple players at shortstop this week. Nick Sogard is starting there Friday, and Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have both seen action at the position. With Mayer kicking over from second base, those same players will likely fight for playing time at second. Mayer hasn't played shortstop at the major-league level since his first two career games last May.

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Smacks game-tying homer Friday
Mayer went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run during the Red Sox's 3-2 extra-inning loss to Atlanta on Friday.
Friday's contest was a low-scoring affair, and Meyer ended up tying things at 2-2 in the seventh inning with a solo homer. It was his second home run of the season and first since April 3. Meyer has struggled at the plate as of late, but perhaps Friday's performance was a sign of things to come for the 23-year-old second baseman.

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Sparks offense in win
Mayer went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and two RBI in Friday's 5-2 win over the Padres.
Mayer doubled and scored in the third inning before adding a two-run homer in the sixth. The long ball was particularly impressive, coming in his first at-bat against a lefty this season after he went just 4-for-26 against southpaws in 2025. The 23-year-old is off to an encouraging start, going 5-for-17 with four extra-base hits and five runs scored through seven games. Entering last season as one of the game's top prospects, he still offers upside as a potential post-hype sleeper in 2026.
