  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Could be activated Friday

Story (sports hernia) said that he could be reinstated from the 60-day injured list as soon as Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Story has been on the shelf since May 16 following sports hernia surgery, but he's finally nearing the finish line of what's been a lengthy recovery process. He kicked off a rehab assignment Sunday at Triple-A Worcester and went 1-for-2 at the dish while playing four innings at shortstop. Story is scheduled to play for Worcester on consecutive days Tuesday and Wednesday before rejoining the Red Sox for a re-evaluation. If the Red Sox medical staff is satisfied with Story's health, he could get the green light to return to action for the big club during their weekend series with the Giants. Once activated, Story will likely usurp Andruw Monasterio as the Red Sox's preferred option at shortstop.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Begins rehab assignment

Story (sports hernia) started at shortstop and went 1-for-2 with a run scored for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.

Story played four innings in the field and handled the lone chance that came his way. Following a day off Monday, Story will join the WooSox for a trip to Syracuse and start at shortstop Tuesday. The Red Sox haven't mapped out anything beyond that, and interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed Story won't play any position other than shortstop. Utility infielder Andruw Monasterio has held down shortstop nicely over the last month, but the Red Sox did not add an established shortstop at the trade deadline, suggesting Story, who played second base when he first signed with Boston, can reclaim the position he's play the most during his career.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Ready for rehab assignment

Story (sports hernia) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.

Story traveled to Worcester on Friday for a workout, and after checking out fine, he's been given the green light to play in games for the first time since May 14. Given the length of Story's absence due to sports hernia surgery, he'll likely need to make several appearances in the minors before making his return from the 60-day injured list. Once activated, Story could displace Andruw Monasterio as the Red Sox's preferred option at shortstop.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Will be re-evaluated this weekend

Story (sports hernia) will be re-evaluated at the end of the team's current homestand to determine when he can begin a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports.

The Red Sox finish up with the White Sox at Fenway Park on Thursday and then host the Athletics through the weekend before heading out on the road. If Story is ready to begin an assignment, he may need a handful of games, given he's been sidelined since the middle of May. The Red Sox have caught fire without Story and could slow-walk his rehab as to not disrupt the chemistry the club has built while going 30-5 since June 25.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Aiming for August rehab assignment

Story (sports hernia) told reporters Monday that "sometime in August is in play" for him to embark on a rehab assignment, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Story underwent surgery for a sports hernia in late May and has been on the 60-day injured list since early June. He's been cleared to take part in full baseball activities, and the good news for the veteran shortstop is that he is getting closer to on-field action in minor-league games. Story would likely need a rather lengthy rehab stint, given the amount of time he's been sidelined for, but it looks like he could be back with the Red Sox by mid-to-late August.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Taking part in full activities

The Red Sox announced June 28 that Story (sports hernia) is taking part in full baseball activities, MLB.com reports.

Story hasn't yet been cleared to do every activity at 100 percent intensity, so until he reaches that benchmark in his recovery from sports hernia surgery, he won't be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 33-year-old shortstop previously said that he expected to miss around eight weeks after undergoing surgery May 21, so he may have a shot at returning from the 60-day injured list at some point shortly after the All-Star break.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Begins baseball activities

Story (abdomen) has begun jogging and swinging off a tee, MLB.com reports.

Story is taking the first steps in his return from sports hernia surgery, and Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said the shortstop is "progressing pretty nicely." Story won't be eligible to be activated until the first day following the All-Star break.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Shifted to 60-day injured list

The Red Sox transferred Story (abdomen) to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Story underwent surgery two weeks ago to repair a sports hernia. He had seemed to have a chance to make it back before missing 60-plus days, but now Story is ineligible for activation until after the All-Star break. Marcelo Mayer will continue to serve as Boston's primary shortstop while Story recovers.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Undergoes surgery for sports hernia

Story underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia Thursday and will be sidelined 6-10 weeks, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Story was placed on the 10-day injured list last weekend and was seeking medical opinions for his hernia. He's opted for surgery and will miss far more than the minimum 10 days as a result. Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have been handling shortstop duties in Story's place this week, but the longer absence could prompt the Red Sox to shift Marcelo Mayer back to his original position. In 41 games this season, Story has slashed an unimpressive .206/.244/.303 with three home runs, 19 RBI, 16 runs scored, four stolen bases and an 8:57 BB:K across 176 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Trevor Story: Injury deemed sports hernia

Story, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, has been diagnosed with a sports hernia, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Story was originally said to have a groin injury, so the sports hernia diagnosis provides more specificity to the issue he's reportedly been dealing with for much of the season. According to Bill Koch of the Providence Journal, a sports hernia can sideline a player six weeks if surgery isn't needed and about four months if surgical, so Story appears to be facing an extended absence. Andruw Monasterio is starting at shortstop for Boson on Saturday and could pick up regular playing time there in Story's stead.
