Eovaldi (0-2) took the loss Wednesday, surrendering six runs on eight hits and three walks over four-plus innings as the Rangers fell 8-3 to the Orioles. He struck out five.
The right-hander dealt with runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but after he seemed to settle down with a 1-2-3 fourth, Samuel Basallo led off the fifth with a solo shot. Eovaldi's had a rough start to 2026, getting tagged for 11 runs in 8.2 innings despite a 12:3 K:BB, and he's having trouble keeping the ball in the yard early. After serving up just 10 homers in 22 starts as part of his career year in 2025, Eovaldi's already coughed up three homers in two starts to kick off the current campaign. He'll look to regain his focus in his next outing, which is set to come at home early next week against the Mariners.

Eovaldi was shut down last season in August and eventually underwent surgery during the offseason to address a sports hernia issue. He said he'd been dealing with the hernia since 2024, but it never affected his pitching. Eovaldi had an impressive 1.73 ERA over 22 starts in 2025, his fourth consecutive season with fewer than 30 starts. The right-hander turns 36 this spring, and manager Skip Schumaker is planning a slow build-up for Eovaldi, similar to how the club handled Jacob deGrom in 2025.

Rangers general manager Ross Fenstermaker said Friday that Eovaldi (shoulder) will visit a physician in Phoenix next week to determine whether he will require sports hernia surgery, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Eovaldi's season ended in late August when he was diagnosed with a right rotator cuff strain. However, Fenstermaker noted that Eovaldi's shoulder injury is not expected to impact his offseason throwing program. The bigger concern now appears to be Eovadi's groin area, though more will be known about his status moving forward following next week's exam. Eovaldi had a fabulous 2025 campaign, posting a 1.73 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 129:21 K:BB across 130 innings. He's under contract with the Rangers through 2027.
