Connor Bedard C | CHI
Blackhawks' Connor Bedard: Not yet close to joining team for practice
Head coach Jeff Blashill said Wednesday that Bedard (shoulder) isn't yet close to joining the Blackhawks for practice, Scott Powers of The Athletic reports.
Bedard is expected to be sidelined until around November after undergoing shoulder surgery in July. He's been taking part in some activities during training camp, including taking some slap shots on the ice before Wednesday's team session. Once he's healthy, the Blackhawks' new captain will handle a significant role. He recorded 30 goals, 45 assists, 50 PIM, 31 hits and 27 blocked shots while averaging 20:52 of ice time per game in 69 regular-season appearances last year.

Jake Allen G | NJ
Devils' Jake Allen: In goal Saturday
Allen will be between the pipes for Saturday's road clash with the Islanders, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
Allen looks set to be the Opening Night starter when the Devils square off with the Flyers on Oct. 1. In 37 regular-season appearances last year, the veteran backstop went 17-17-2 with a 2.74 GAA and one shutout. As long as Allen can hold on to the No. 1 job, he should be capable of reaching the 20-win mark for the first time since 2017-18.

Nicolas Daws G | WPG
Devils' Nico Daws: Set to start Thursday
Daws is slated to start Thursday's road preseason game against the Rangers, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.
Daws rejoined the Devils on a two-year, $2.2 million contract in July, and he's slated to make his preseason debut and play the full game during New Jersey's penultimate exhibition matchup. The 25-year-old has made just nine regular-season appearances for the Devils across the past two years, going 5-2-0 with a 2.02 GAA and .925 save percentage. The Devils traded Jacob Markstrom to Florida during the offseason, so Daws could compete with Jake Allen and David Rittich if he makes a strong impression during Thursday's start.

Pheonix Copley G | CLB
Blue Jackets' Pheonix Copley: Put on waivers
Copley was placed on waivers by Columbus on Wednesday, per Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports.
When Elvis Merzlikins (shoulder) underwent surgery in August, it initially looked like Copley would enter the campaign as the Blue Jackets' No. 2 goaltender. However, Cam Talbot signed a one-year, $950,000 contract with Columbus on Sept. 15, and he is now projected to be Jet Greaves' backup until Merzlikins is healthy. As a consequence, Copley is slated to open the upcoming campaign in the minors, assuming he goes unclaimed.

Cam Dineen D | EDM
Flyers' Cam Dineen: Waived by Philadelphia
Dineen was placed on waivers by the Flyers on Wednesday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Dineen signed a two-year, two-way contract with Philadelphia in July and seemed like a long shot to make the team's Opening Night roster. He'll head to AHL Lehigh Valley if he clears waivers, but he could be called up if the Flyers deal with injuries.
-
Jack Studnicka C | PHI
Flyers' Jack Studnicka: Waived by Flyers
Studnicka hit the waiver wire Wednesday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Once a well-regarded prospect, Studnicka has bounced through a few organizations since and signed with the Flyers on a two-way deal this summer. This is a continuation of a career that's had trouble finding NHL stability, and he now heads back to the wire again.
-
Nolan Foote LW | FLA
Flyers' Nolan Foote: Training camp cut
Foote was placed on waivers by Philadelphia on Wednesday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Foote signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Flyers this summer, looking to stick as a bottom-six winger. He seemingly didn't win that job outright at camp, but he's a name worth monitoring on the waiver wire given his pedigree.
-
James Malatesta LW | CLB
Blue Jackets' James Malatesta: Put on waivers
Malatesta was placed on waivers by Columbus on Wednesday, per Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports.
Malatesta had 10 goals, 18 points and 87 PIM in 57 regular-season appearances with AHL Cleveland in 2025-26. He's slated to spend most, if not all, of the upcoming campaign in the minors.

Damon Severson D | CLB
Blue Jackets' Damon Severson: Status uncertain for Opening Night
Head coach Rick Bowness said Thursday that he isn't yet sure whether Severson (shoulder) will be ready for the Blue Jackets' Opening Night matchup against the Sabres on Oct. 1, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.
Severson underwent shoulder surgery in early April that ended his 2025-26 campaign prematurely, and it's not yet clear whether he'll be ready to suit up once the 2026-27 regular season begins. Bowness said Wednesday that the defenseman tells him "every day" that he "feels good." The Blue Jackets have consistently increased Severon's contact workload in practice.

Owen Sillinger C | CLB
Blue Jackets' Owen Sillinger: Placed on waivers
Sillinger was put on waivers by Columbus on Wednesday, per Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports.
Sillinger had 14 goals, 34 points and 50 PIM in 69 regular-season outings with AHL Cleveland in 2025-26. He inked a one-year, two-way contract with the Blue Jackets over the summer.
