  • Cowboys' Ezekiel Elliott: Investigation of reported assault case underway

An investigation into a domestic violence allegation recently directed at Elliott by a former girlfriend is underway, ESPN.com reports.

The running back, who was drafted fourth overall by the Cowboys in April, has not been arrested or charged with a crime stemming from an alleged incident last Friday. When asked if the allegation might affect Elliott's status for the start of training camp, coach Jason Garrett replied, "we don't anticipate that." Per the ESPN report, there is no timetable for a resolution of the investigation into the allegation, which Elliott has "adamantly denied" per the Cowboys' official site.

  • Ravens' Lorenzo Taliaferro: Absent from practice

Taliaferro (undisclosed) is not participating in Thursday's practice, Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports.

While not starting training camp on the PUP list, Taliaferro is unavailable for the first full-squad practice. The 2014 fourth-round draft pick is likely just dealing with a minor injury, but he may already have an uphill battle to earn a roster spot, as Justin Forsett, Javorius Allen and Kenneth Dixon are all considered locks. Taliaferro reportedly even worked behind Terrance West throughout much of the offseason program.

  • Cowboys' Darren McFadden: On track for Week 1

McFadden (elbow) is on track to be ready for Week 1 after receiving good news from a recent bone scan, Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports.

McFadden had surgery in mid-June on his fractured elbow, with the recovery timeline estimated at 2-3 months. He should still be considered questionable for the start of the season and will presumably miss the majority of training camp. McFadden figures to start camp on the Non-Football Injury list, as he broke his elbow in a unfortunate off-field accident this summer, trying to prevent his cell phone from falling off a counter.

  • Doug Martin RB | LV

Buccaneers' Doug Martin: Optimistic but looking to improve in coming season

Martin is looking forward to 2016 but seeks to reduce his career-high five fumbles from last season, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The Pro Bowl running back expressed considerable optimism regarding the coming season as training camp opened Wednesday, remarking that he's "very anxious to get going, to see what this team can do, see how we're going to improve." At the same time, Martin, armed with a new five-year, $35.7 million contract, knows the onus is on him to not only live up to his new deal, but improve on his surprising ball security problems from last season. After only losing three fumbles over his first three NFL campaigns, the 27-year-old coughed up the ball on five occasions in 2015, with three of those occurring in the final five weeks of the campaign. Martin confirms he's worked on specific technique this offseason designed to address the issue. "I watched all those fumbles after last season," Martin said. "It was more of me fighting for extra yards, not having my other arm on the ball, other hand on the ball. That will all be corrected. I don't look to be fumbling that much this year."

  • Ryan Mathews RB | PHI

Eagles' Ryan Mathews: Spotted walking without a limp

Mathews, who landed on the Eagles' Active/Non-football Injury list after hurting his ankle while training last week, was seen walking into the team's facility Wednesday without a noticeable limp, CSN Philadelphia reports.

Though the Eagles have not presented a timetable for Mathews' return, this nugget hints at an injury that isn't too severe. Either way, until Mathews returns to the field, the likes of Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood and Kenjon Barner figure to see added running back reps during the Eagles' training camp practices.

  • Ryan Mathews RB | PHI

Eagles' Ryan Mathews: Dealing with ankle injury

The Eagles have placed Mathews (ankle) on their Active/Non-Football Injury List.

The report notes that the running back suffered an ankle injury while training last week, without providing a timetable for Mathews' return to action. On a more positive note, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer noted Wednesday that Mathews "was seen walking into (the Eagles') facility and his injury isn't considered serious." We'll let you know if that assessment changes.

  • Abou Toure RB | IND

Colts' Abou Toure: Joins Indy backfield

    The Colts have signed Toure.

Toure gives the Colts some added backfield depth after the team placed fellow running back Tyler Varga on the Reserve/Retired list.

  • Kenyan Drake RB | GB

Dolphins' Kenyan Drake: Good to go

Drake, who pulled a hamstring this spring, is good to go in advance of training camp, the Miami Herald reports.

The Dolphins' recent addition of Arian Foster represents a hit to Drake's short-term fantasy upside, but Foster has much to prove health-wise. Fellow tailback Jay Ajayi is hardly a sure thing either as he enters his second NFL season, so Drake remains a break away from re-emerging on the sleeper front.

  • Bernard Pierce RB | DEN

Jets' Bernard Pierce: Joining Jets' backfield

The Jets will sign Pierce, who is set to serve a two-game suspension to start the 2016 season, NFL.com reports.

Matt Forte and Bilal Powell currently top the Jets' RB depth chart, but Pierce will give the team added backfield depth heading into training camp, with Khiry Robinson a candidate to open camp on the PUP list and the team planning to waive Zac Stacy with a failed physical designation.

  • Roy Helu RB | LV

Raiders' Roy Helu: Placed on PUP list

Helu (hip) has been placed on the Raiders' physically unable to perform list for the start of training camp.

Helu did not practice in any of the Raiders' offseason workouts while recovering from offseason hip procedures, and he'll continue to sit out of practice as training camp begins. It's unclear how long he'll remain out, but the more time he misses, the more likely it is that he gets cut, as Oakland has several other running backs also on the roster, including Latavius Murray, DeAndre Washington, George Atkinson and Taiwan Jones.
