  • Alvin Kamara RB | NO

Saints' Alvin Kamara: Tending to knee injury

Kamara was limited at Wednesday's practice due to a knee injury, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

The Saints had the luxury of Mark Ingram and even Adrian Peterson for a time last season to ease some of the backfield burden, but Ingram's four-game suspension has left Kamara as one of the NFL's few remaining bell cows through the first three weeks in 2018. As evidence, Kamara leads the league in yards from scrimmage with 430 while playing 81 percent of the Saints' offensive snaps. Despite popping up on the injury report with a knee concern, Kamara at least took some reps, which is a positive sign as he embarks on Week 4 prep. Look for his status to receive clarification as the week progresses.

  • Joe Mixon RB | HOU

Bengals' Joe Mixon: Doesn't practice Wednesday

Mixon (knee) was listed as a non-participant during Wednesday's practice, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.

On the plus side, Mixon was spotted on the rehab field for the first time since his Sept. 15 arthroscopic knee procedure. The running back wasn't wearing pads when he stretched with the team beforehand, then proceeded to work out on the side with the Bengals' other injured players. More updates on Mixon's status will follow over the Bengals' subsequent two practices this week, but the assumption is that he'll miss a second straight contest Sunday against the Falcons. If that's the case, Giovani Bernard -- who was limited by a thigh issue Wednesday -- would continue to lead the Cincinnati backfield.

  • Matt Breida RB | SF

49ers' Matt Breida: Held out of practice

Breida isn't practicing Wednesday due to knee and calf injuries, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Breida was diagnosed with a hyperextended knee after Sunday's 38-27 loss to Kansas City, piling up 117 scrimmage yards despite missing some time during the first half. It wasn't known that he was also battling the calf injury, but there's no reason to believe either issue is serious. Jimmy Garoppolo's season-ending knee injury is probably the bigger concern for Breida's fantasy value, as the 49ers likely will have trouble scoring points with C.J. Beathard under center. Alfred Morris (ankle) and Raheem Mostert would stand to benefit if Breida isn't available for Sunday's game against the Chargers.

  • Patriots' Kenjon Barner: Slots in as No. 3 back

Barner officially re-signed with the Patriots on Wednesday.

Reports surfaced a day earlier suggesting that Barner's return to New England was imminent, but he wasn't added to the 53-man roster until the Patriots cleared a spot for him by surprisingly placing Rex Burkhead (neck) on injured reserve. Barner bolsters the team's backfield depth with Burkhead out of the mix, but at 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds, the 29-year-old is unlikely to gain much traction in the rushing attack. As it stands now, he slots in behind top back Sony Michel and pass-catching ace James White, with most of Barner's initial snaps instead expected to come on special teams.

  • Donnel Pumphrey: Released from Detroit's practice squad

The Lions released Pumphrey from their practice squad Wednesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Pumphrey joined the Detroit organization after failing to win a roster spot with the Eagles at the conclusion of the preseason. The 2017 fourth-round pick has yet to make his NFL regular-season debut after a torn hamstring kept him on injured reserve throughout his rookie campaign.

  • Chiefs' Damien Williams: Barely sees field in Week 3

Williams saw just seven offensive snaps Sunday versus the 49ers, catching two passes for 16 yards on the day.

Williams provides the Chiefs with a reliable pair of hands in the event the team is trailing and in need of the two-minute offense, but that hasn't been the case through three weeks with quarterback Patrick Mahomes under center. Williams ranks third in the pecking order for carries behind both Kareem Hunt and Spencer Ware, leaving him off the fantasy radar in the vast majority of leagues.

  • 49ers' Raheem Mostert: Musters eight yards

Mostert picked up eight yards on his lone target and was held for no gain on one carry during Sunday's 38-27 loss to Kansas City.

Mostert had not recorded a touch during the 49ers' first two games but was involved in the action on Sunday. With C.J. Beathard now in at quarterback, it would make sense for San Francisco to lean more heavily on the run, particularly against a Seahawks defense that has been gashed. The question is how many of those hypothetical carries would go to Mostert, who sits behind established veteran Alfred Morris and early-season dynamo Matt Breida. The likely answer is not many.

  • Chase Edmonds RB | WAS

Cardinals' Chase Edmonds: Runs for 10 yards

Edmonds rushed for 10 yards on five carries during Sunday's 16-14 loss to the Bears.

Arizona had, scoring-wise, its strongest offensive performance of the season on Sunday, but Edmonds saw a season low in touches and yards. His exposure in the offense has declined in each of the past two weeks. It's a small sample size, but it's also hard to make much of a difference as a backup running back in an offense averaging less than a touchdown per game. The hope will be that the Cardinals' offense will turn a corner with Josh Rosen now under center, beginning Sunday against the rival Seahawks.

  • Saints' Jonathan Williams: Two touches in Week 3

Williams gained one yard on one carry in Sunday's win against the Falcons. He also caught his only target, which also went for just one yard.

Williams was nearly invisible against the Falcons, playing a mere nine offensive snaps. While he actually saw more playing time than Mike Gillislee, who played just four snaps and gained 10 yards on three carries, neither backup running back is a particularly appealing option with Mark Ingram set to return from suspension in Week 5. As such, Williams probably does not need to be owned in most fantasy leagues.

  • Saints' Mike Gillislee: Another quiet game

Gillislee gained 10 yards on three carries in Sunday's win against the Falcons.

Gillislee had the same number of carries as quarterbacks Drew Brees and Taysom Hill, who each ran the ball three times in Sunday's contest, with Brees actually reaching the end zone twice. Meanwhile, starting running back Alvin Kamara totaled 31 touches -- 16 carries and a whopping 15 receptions. Perhaps needless to say, Gillislee does not appear to be an integral part of the Saints backfield. With Mark Ingram set to return from suspension after Week 4, Gillislee probably does not need to be owned in most fantasy leagues.
