A source relayed to Jane Slater of NFL Network that while talks with Elliott continued late Sunday, a new deal with the Cowboys is still "not close."

There had been some optimism on that front this past weekend, but as Week 1 approaches, the running back remains on the team's "Reserve/Did Not Report" list, with no deal in hand as the Cowboys' matchup against the Giants on Sunday approaches. With each hour/day that passes, the chances that Tony Pollard heads the team's Week 1 backfield increase. When it comes to these matters, however, things can change in a hurry, and in the case of Elliott, there's at least been recent hope of a resolution, which is more than can be said about Melvin Gordon's contract impasse with the Chargers.

Gordon, who is in the midst of a contract impasse, remains on the Chargers' Reserve/Did Not Report list heading into Week 1.

Meanwhile, Eric D. Williams of ESPN relays that GM Tom Telesco announced Sunday that extension talks with the running back will be postponed until after the 2019 season, while noting that "when or if Melvin reports, he'll play this season under his current contract, and we'll just revisit it after the season." At this stage, Gordon does not plan to report to the team as Week 1 approaches and has permission to seek a trade to another franchise. With no resolution in sight, the running back appears poised to miss at least one game, perhaps more, which sets the stage for Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson to head the Chargers' backfield Sunday against the Colts.

Elliott and the Cowboys were unable to finalize a contract extension Sunday, with the team growing frustrated by the end of the exchange, Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports.

The Cowboys reportedly expected more compromise after Saturday's negotiations brought some positive momentum. Regardless of the details, it sounds like the two parties will continue talking Monday, with time now a serious factor in terms of Elliott's availability for Week 1 against the Giants. The 24-year-old running back currently resides on the Reserve/Did Not Report list, leaving rookie Tony Pollard as the top running back on the Cowboys' 53-man roster.

Henry (calf) has been practicing for the past two weeks, NFL Network's Will Selva reports. "I'm feeling well," Henry said Monday. "Sad I missed camp. I've been practicing these past two weeks."

Henry strained his calf on the first day of training camp, July 26, and was held out of practice until Aug. 19. Despite missing the entire preseason, it sounds like he'll be ready for full participation Wednesday when the Titans release their initial injury report for Sunday's season opener in Cleveland. The Browns gave up the 12th most fantasy points and seventh most rushing yards to running backs last year, but they should present a tougher matchup after adding DT Sheldon Richardson and DE Olivier Vernon in the offseason.

San Francisco signed Wilson to its practice squad Sunday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Wilson did not make the 49ers' final 53-man roster, but he cleared waivers and is now stashed on the practice squad. The 23-year-old flashed some promise this preseason, racking up 178 yards (4.3 YPC) and four touchdowns. The team is currently carrying three backs -- none of which are the model of good health -- so Wilson figures to be the first man called upon should any of the current players in the rotation go down for any period of time.

Williams (foot) has added competition for backfield slotting following the Bengals' addition of Samaje Perine, Geoff Hobson of the team's official site reports.

Joe Mixon and Giovani Bernard remain atop the team's running back depth chart, with Perine and Williams next up in the pecking order. Who ends up serving as the team's No. 3 back has yet to be settled, but Perine could well be rejuvenated by reuniting with Mixon, who he teamed up with when the two played college ball at Oklahoma.

Ellington has been released by the Buccaneers, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.

With Ellington no longer in the mix, the Bucs' backfield currently comprises Peyton Barber, Ronald Jones and Dare Ogunbowale. Ellington will now look to carve out a change-of-pace role with another team.

Williams (ribs) isn't on the field for Sunday's practice, George Bremer of The Anderson Herald Bulletin reports.

Williams suffered a broken rib during the team's second preseason game against the Browns and has yet to suit up in any fashion. The injury isn't expected to be serious, so his return could be in the coming days. The Colts did receive good news Sunday with Jordan Wilkins (foot) returning to practice, so he'll presumably see an increase in reps as long as he's healthy and Williams is sidelined.

Wilkins was held out for the entire preseason, with coach Frank Reich mentioning Aug. 20 that he wasn't sure if the running back would be ready for Week 1. A Sunday return to practice should give Wilkins a shot to play in the opener, though he'll be third on the depth chart behind Marlon Mack and Nyheim Hines. Fellow reserve back Jonathan Williams (broken rib) remained out of practice Sunday.

General manager Tom Telesco announced Sunday that extension talks with Gordon will be postponed until after the 2019 season, Gilbert Manzano of The Orange County Register reports.

The Chargers reportedly have given Gordon and his agents permission to seek a trade, but the team isn't willing to continue discussions for a contract extension. To be more specific, Eric D. Williams of ESPN.com passes along the following quote from Telesco: "When or if Melvin reports, he'll play this season under his current contract, and we'll just revisit it after the season." It's a tricky situation for the 26-year-old running back, with just one week remaining before the Chargers host the Colts on Sept. 8. Gordon's current deal calls for a $5.6 million base salary in 2019 under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.
