  • Gus Edwards RB | LAC

Ravens' Gus Edwards: Out at least four games

Edwards (knee) was moved from the Active/PUP list to the reserve/PUP list Tuesday, ruling him out for the first four games of the regular season.

Edwards is well behind fellow ACL tear sufferer J.K. Dobbins, who was activated from reserve/PUP on Aug. 8 and has been brought along slowly throughout training camp. Mike Davis started the team's first two preseason games and seemingly will be first in line for the Week 1 start if Dobbins isn't ready. Justice Hill has been next through the backfield rotation after Davis, followed by rookie fifth-round pick Tyler Badie and then 2021 UDFA Nate McCrary. It's a less-than-impressive group behind Dobbins, leaving room for Edwards to regain a significant role if he can get back to full strength or something close to it.

  • Bears' David Montgomery: Saturday status uncertain

Montgomery (undisclosed) will have his status for Saturday's game against the Browns determined based upon how he does at practice this week, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.

Montgomery dealt with an undisclosed injury two weeks ago, and he returned to the practice field Monday. As yet, there's been no suggestion he might miss Week 1, but Khalil Herbert (undisclosed) remains a threat to siphon off touches depending on the health of both backs to begin the season.

  • Derrick Gore RB | WAS

Chiefs' Derrick Gore: Won't play in preseason finale

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday that Gore (thumb) won't play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Packers, Herbie Teope of The Kansas City Star reports.

Gore rushed five times for 11 yards across 18 offensive snaps during Saturday's preseason game against the Commanders and presumably picked up the thumb injury as well. The severity of the issue remains unclear, but it could cost him a spot on the initial 53-man roster. Clyde Edwards-Helaire remains the projected starter with Jerick McKinnon and Ronald Jones as primary backups, but rookie Isiah Pacheco has also made waves during training camp. With those four healthy, Gore will have a tough time hanging on to a spot during the final roster cuts, especially if the thumb injury remains a concern.

  • Josh Jacobs RB | GB

Raiders' Josh Jacobs: Back at practice

Jacobs (undisclosed) returned to practice Tuesday, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.

The running back had missed time due to an unspecified issue, but now that he's back on the field, Jacobs will look to cement his role atop the Raiders' backfield depth chart. With the team slated to move on from Kenyan Drake, Jacobs and Zamir White appear poised to handle the bulk of the early-down work for Las Vegas, with Ameer Abdullah and Brandon Bolden profiling as the squad's primary change-of-pace options heading into Week 1.

  • AJ Dillon RB | CAR

Packers' AJ Dillon: Likely rested again

Dillon isn't expected to play in Green Bay's final preseason game Thursday against Kansas City, with the Packers holding out their top players to prepare for Week 1 at Minnesota, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.

Dillon and Aaron Jones will both finish the preseason without playing any snaps. It remains to be seen if the workload split between the two in the regular season is close to 50/50 the way it was after Week 10 last year following Jones' MCL sprain. Dillon had 180 total yards and two TDs in two matchups with Minnesota in 2021, including the game Jones missed (Week 11) due to the aforementioned knee injury.

  • Aaron Jones RB | MIN

Packers' Aaron Jones: Rested again for preseason finale

Jones isn't expected to play in the final preseason game with the Packers holding out their top players to prepare for Week 1 at Minnesota, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.

Jones and AJ Dillon, among others, haven't played at all this preseason. There's no doubt both backs will have key roles in the opener, but it's less clear if the backfield split will look more like early 2021 (advantage: Jones) or late 2021 (closer to 50/50, though still more Jones than Dillon). The Minnesota defense Jones faces Week 1 could look different from past years as well with new DC Ed Donatell expected to use plenty of 3-4 looks, but a lot of key players are the same, including linebacker Eric Kendricks, edge rusher Danielle Hunter, and safety Harrison Smith.

  • Jaguars' Travis Etienne: Sitting out final exhibition

Etienne and other starters aren't scheduled to play in the Jaguars' third and final preseason game Saturday against Atlanta, Hays Carlyon of 1010 AM WJXL Jacksonville reports.

Etienne got most of the first-team snaps this preseason -- with Snoop Conner subbing in some -- and took 17 carries for 52 yards and one catch for 10 yards. The 2021 first-round pick looked better than the middling numbers suggest, and he figures to be the lead back Week 1 even if James Robinson (Achilles) is cleared to play -- something coach Doug Pederson expects to happen, per Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network.

  • Michael Carter RB | TEN

Jets' Michael Carter: Should play this week

Carter and other key players for the Jets are expected to play in Sunday's preseason game against the Giants, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Carter started the preseason opener before sitting out the second game along with other key veterans. Rookie Breece Hall played both games, subbing in behind Carter in the first, but nobody will be surprised if the 36th overall pick in this year's draft ends up getting more touches once the games count. If Hall is as advertised and Carter builds on his strong rookie year, the Jets soon will have one of the top backfields in the league. Quarterback and O-line play also are big factors in RB fantasy production, though perhaps not as much for Carter if he's not getting many carries anyway and mostly plays on passing downs. It'll be interesting to see how the Jets split work between the two in their final exhibition Sunday against the Giants.

  • Jake Bargas RB | NO

    Jake Bargas: Waived by Bears

Bargas was waived by the Bears on Tuesday, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.

Bargas will look for a new opportunity just two days after signing with the Bears. The fullback has appeared in just two NFL games and has registered seven total offensive snaps, all of which came in one game with the Vikings in 2020.

  • CJ Verdell RB | IND

    CJ Verdell: Waived by Indy

The Colts waived Verdell on Tuesday.

Verdell signed with the Colts in May as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon, where he rushed for nine touchdowns over his final two campaigns. However, the 5-foot-8 running back played a marginal role during Indianapolis' first two preseason games and will now be in search of a new NFL opportunity.
