  • Panthers' Baker Mayfield: QB decision delayed

Coach Matt Rhule wasn't ready to announce the Panthers' starting quarterback between Mayfield and Sam Darnold for Week 1 after Friday's preseason loss at New England, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

There was a belief Rhule would make a decision after preseason Week 2, but that may have gone out the window when both Mayfield and Darnold were kept out of the game. Rhule's comments imply as much, meaning he likely wants to see another week of prep before deploying the signal-callers next Friday against the Bills.

  • Matt Corral QB | MIN

Panthers' Matt Corral: Sustains foot injury Friday

Corral suffered a foot injury during Friday's preseason loss in New England, Schuyler Callihan of SI.com reports.

With Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold sitting out the Panthers' second exhibition, P.J. Walker and Corral split the workload at quarterback. Walker handled the first and third quarters, while Corral got the second and was expected to take the fourth before limping off the field and getting ruled out in the waning minutes of the contest. Overall, Corral completed nine of 15 passes for 58 yards and recorded three carries for six yards before his departure. The severity of his injury is unknown, but it could impact his ability to be available for the team's third preseason outing next Friday against the Bills.

  • Jordan Love QB | GB

    Packers' Jordan Love: Starting Friday

Love will start Friday's preseason contest against the Saints, Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports.

With Aaron Rodgers in street clothes for a second straight exhibition, Love will get a chance to direct the offense. It'll be interesting to see if he logs a full half like he did last Friday in San Francisco, but whenever he departs, he'll hand things over to Danny Etling.

  • Aaron Rodgers QB | PIT

Packers' Aaron Rodgers: Not in line to play Friday

Rodgers isn't slated to play in Friday's preseason game versus the Saints, Mike Spofford of the Packers' official site reports.

With Rodgers sidelined for a second consecutive exhibition, third-year quarterback Jordan Love again will get the nod under center. Rodgers does have one more opportunity to make an appearance before Week 1 on Thursday in Kansas City, but it's been a number of years since the four-time MVP took the field during the preseason.

  • Joshua Dobbs QB | NE

Browns' Joshua Dobbs: Frontrunner for backup job

Dobbs is currently the favorite to open the season as the Browns' backup quarterback, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Dobbs remains ahead of Josh Rosen for the backup job behind Jacoby Brissett, but it's still an active competition. Dobbs joined the Browns this offseason after spending the 2021 campaign as a member of the Steelers, failing to enter any games during the season.

  • Browns' Jacoby Brissett: Not in line to play Sunday

The Browns don't plan to play Brissett in Sunday's preseason game against the Eagles, Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Coach Kevin Stefanski previously noted that Deshaun Watson -- who is in line to serve an 11-game suspension to begin the 2022 season -- won't play in the Browns' final two preseason games. With Brissett, the team's presumed early-season starter, not in line to play Sunday, Joshua Dobbs and Josh Rosen are slated to handle Cleveland's QB reps versus Philadelphia.

  • Will Grier QB | CAR

Cowboys' Will Grier: Back at practice

Grier (groin) returned to practice this week, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.

The 27-year-old quarterback has played in only two NFL games since being drafted by Carolina in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, but Grier was looking good in training camp before suffering a minor groin strain. Given Cooper Rush's shaky performance in Dallas' preseason opener, the door is still open for Grier to emerge as the team's No. 2 QB to begin the season behind Dak Prescott.

  • Matt Corral QB | MIN

Panthers' Matt Corral: In line for more snaps

Corral will play alternating quarters with P.J. Walker during Carolina's preseason game at New England on Friday, Darin Gantt of Panthers.com reports.

It's an unconventional arrangement that's been cooked up by coaches Matt Rhule and Ben McAdoo, but it's one that works in Corral's favor. The rookie out of Mississippi didn't see any snaps until the fourth quarter of the Panthers' preseason opener at Washington, so this qualifies as a temporary promotion for him. He seems to be considered an important piece of Carolina's plans moving into the future, but his place on the depth chart this season could largely depend on how he and Walker perform during the preseason.

  • Jared Goff QB | DET

Lions' Jared Goff: Unlikely to play

Lions coach Dan Campbell suggested Goff and other key players won't play in Saturday's preseason game against Indianapolis, SI.com's Christian Booher reports.

Goff was sharp in the preseason opener, completing three of four passes for 47 yards to set up a rushing TD for D'Andre Swift. The Detroit offense appears improved this year, with Swift, TE T.J. Hockenson and WR Amon-Ra St. Brown joined by veteran wideout DJ Chark and eventually rookie first-round pick Jameson Williams (knee). The team also has a solid offensive line, though things look less promising on defense, to say the least.

  • David Blough QB | DET

Lions' David Blough: In line to start Saturday

Coach Dan Campbell indicated Blough will start Detroit's preseason game at Indianapolis on Saturday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

It's an encouraging vote of confidence in Blough, who outplayed Tim Boyle for nearly the entire game in the Lions' preseason opener vs. Atlanta before fumbling a crucial snap late in the fourth quarter that essentially cost his team the game. It appears that he and Boyle are in a legitimate competition for the backup job behind Jared Goff, and Blough could give himself a big boost with another solid performance against the Colts.
