  Purdy completed four of six passes for 29 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed once for three yards in the 49ers' 41-17 preseason win over the Chargers on Thursday night. Purdy was in on San Francisco's first possession and led the 49ers on a 12-play, 39-yard march where he recorded his first completion to Deebo Samuel before connecting on three occasions with rookie second-round pick De'Zhaun Stribling later in the drive. Purdy gave way to Mac Jones after that point, and given the former's checkered recent injury history, Thursday's game action is likely the last he'll see prior to a Week 1 showdown with the Rams in Melbourne, Australia.

  San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Purdy has a "good chance" to play in Thursday's preseason matchup with the Chargers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Any appearance likely will be brief after Purdy took part in joint practices this week. He was held out of San Francisco's first preseason game and doesn't figure to play more than a drive or two during the exhibition slate.

  Purdy isn't in line to play in Thursday's preseason opener against the Titans, Vic Tafur and Matt Barrows report. The report indicates that the 49ers won't play most of their starters Thursday, and with Purdy set to sit this one out, Mac Jones, Kurtis Rourke and Adrian Martinez are the team's available signal-caller option against Tennessee. With Jones already entrenched as Purdy's top backup, Rourke and Martinez could end up seeing the bulk of the QB reps Thursday.

  Purdy and rookie wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling have been starting to connect more frequently at training camp, Marc Adams of 49ers Webzone reports. Purdy will be operating without Ricky Pearsall (knee) for the entirety of the 2026 campaign, and veterans Mike Evans (quadriceps) and Christian Kirk (calf) have been sidelined at practice recently. As a result, the fifth-year QB has gotten to log some added reps with rookie second-rounder De'Zhaun Stribling, most notably connecting on a 50-yard touchdown up the right sideline Monday. Purdy also connected with Deebo Samuel for an explosive play Monday, as the two players look to rebuild their previous chemistry from three seasons together from 2022 to 2024 before Samuel took a one-year detour to Washington in 2025 and then returned to the 49ers as a free agent July 30.

  Purdy, who has been participating in this week's Tight End University, an event hosted by teammate George Kittle (Achilles), said that he plans to gather with other 49ers for throwing sessions over the next month prior to training camp, David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard reports. As the coming campaign approaches, Purdy -- who has had time to move past the shoulder and toe issues he dealt with last season -- is set to work with a WR corps that welcomes a trio of key additions in Mike Evans, Christian Kirk and rookie second-rounder De'Zhaun Stribling. Also in the mix are returnees Ricky Pearsall, Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins and Demarcus Robinson. Meanwhile, Kittle is bouncing back from an Achilles injury, and though the star TE says that he has "a chance" to be ready for Week 1, the 49ers may need to lean more on their key wideouts out of the gate this year while Kittle works his way back into the mix. Purdy is coming off a 2025 regular season in which he threw for 2,167 yards with 20 TDs and 10 picks, while carrying 33 times for 147 yards and three scores in nine games. Looking ahead, the signal-caller's fantasy upside in 2026 hinges largely on avoiding injuries, as well as building strong on-field chemistry with his team's re-tooled pass-catching unit.
