  Mahomes (knee) said during Saturday's preseason game at Tampa Bay that he's "extremely confident" he'll be available Week 1 against the Broncos on Monday, Sept. 14, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports. Mahomes has been cleared for all activity during training camp, and while he wanted to suit up Saturday, coach Andy Reid opted to hold out his franchise quarterback. Mahomes added that he would like to play this coming Friday's exhibition versus the Seahawks, but Reid also will make that decision. In any case, Mahomes appears poised to be active for the season opener following the torn ACL that he suffered Week 15 of the 2025 campaign.

  Head coach Andy Reid said that Mahomes (knee) won't play in Saturday's preseason game versus the Buccaneers, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. The Chiefs will have Justin Fields, Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun split the reps at quarterback while Mahomes is held out for a second straight game. Mahomes has incurred no reported setbacks in his recovery from the torn ACL and LCL in his left knee that he sustained last December, as the Chiefs are seemingly just exercising caution by holding him out of action during the preseason slate. He was cleared to take part in 11-on-11 drills at the beginning of training camp and took snaps with the first-team offense during Thursday's practice after Fields went first through the order in preparation for his start Saturday, per Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com. Mahomes remains on track to start the Chiefs' regular-season opener Sept. 14 versus the Broncos.

He has been cleared for 11-on-11 drills, but the Chiefs don't have much incentive to rush the star quarterback's return to game action. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared that Mahomes had been "cleared to participate fully" to begin training camp, and seeing the 30-year-old signal-caller now taking part in team drills affirms his tremendous recovery progress. That said, it still remains to be seen whether Mahomes has been cleared for game action, be that in the preseason or Week 1 against the Broncos on Monday, Sept. 14. Mahomes has stated that his aim is to be ready for the start of the regular season.

  Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Thursday that Mahomes (knee) should "be able to do some things in camp," Nate Taylor of ESPN.com reports. Reid also said Mahomes is "on course to get ready for camp", though "the healing process has to keep taking place." It's mostly coach-speak, but overwhelmingly positive, which meshes with previous favorable reports on Mahomes' rehab from mid-December surgery to repair ACL and LCL tears. He's been limited to individual drills and 7-on-7s at OTAs, allowing Justin Fields to take first-team reps.
