Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Not starting Game 1

Martinez (ankle) isn't in the lineup for Game 1 of the ALDS against the Rays on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Martinez is on Boston's ALDS roster, but Kyle Schwarber will serve as the designated hitter while Christian Arroyo enters the lineup at second base Thursday. Manager Alex Cora said prior to Game 1 that the 34-year-old will take batting practice Thursday and could return as the designated hitter Friday, per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic.

Rays' Ji-Man Choi: Takes seat against left-hander

Choi isn't starting Game 1 of the ALDS against the Red Sox on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Choi will get a breather for the Rays' first postseason matchup with lefty Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound for Tampa Bay. Jordan Luplow will start at first base and bat sixth.

  • Justin Turner DH | CHC

Dodgers' Justin Turner: Ties game with solo shot

Turner went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Wednesday's wild-card win over the Cardinals.

The Dodgers were down 1-0 before they even got their first chance to bat, but Turner pulled them level with a shot to left field to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. Turner how has 13 career postseason homers in 73 games, a number he's paired with an excellent .294/.390/.515 slash line.

Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Added to ALDS roster

Martinez (ankle) has been added to Boston's ALDS roster, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.

Martinez wasn't active for the AL Wild Card Game due to a left ankle sprain, but he'll be available during the best-of-five series against Tampa Bay. However, it's not yet known whether he'll be cleared to play in Game 1 on Thursday.

Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Hopes to return for ALDS

Martinez (ankle) is expected to fight to be on Boston's ALDS roster, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

Martinez is still hurt after he exited Sunday's regular-season finale against Washington due to a left ankle sprain. However, further testing revealed no structural damage. The 34-year-old could miss time early in the ALDS if he doesn't heal in time, but he has a chance to be a part of the team's roster for the series against Tampa Bay.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Tallies three hits in playoff exit

Stanton went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a strikeout in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Red Sox in the AL Wild Card Game.

Stanton's solo shot with one out in the ninth inning brought Tuesday's game within four runs, but the next two Yankees batters were retired to end the team's season. The 31-year-old ranked second on the team with 35 home runs during the 2021 campaign, and he slashed .273/.354/.516 with 97 RBI and 64 runs across 139 games.

  • Brandon Belt DH | TOR

Giants' Brandon Belt: NLCS return possible

Manager Gabe Kapler said Tuesday it's "the dream scenario" for Belt (thumb) to be ready in time for the National League Championship Series, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.

Belt landed on the injured list last week after suffering a fractured left thumb, and he'll be sidelined for at least the NLDS. It was reported the injury is expected to require about four weeks to heal, though the team is still holding out hope the 33-year-old will return ahead of that timeline. Darin Ruf and LaMonte Wade should see action at first base in the meantime for the Giants.

Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Missing AL Wild Card Game

Martinez (ankle) is not on the Red Sox's wild-card roster, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Martinez left Sunday's regular-season finale against the Nationals with a left ankle sprain, an issue which is evidently serious enough to prevent him from serving even in a designated hitter role just two days later. Whether or not Martinez has a chance to be active for the ALDS should Boston advance remains to be seen.

  • Bryce Harper 1B | PHI

Phillies' Bryce Harper: Finishes season on high note

Harper went 1-for-1 with a double and a walk Sunday in the Phillies' 5-4 loss to the Marlins.

Harper and the Phillies' rough series in Atlanta earlier this week eliminated the team from the playoff race, but the 28-year-old outfielder at least had a productive weekend to wrap up the season, going 5-for-10 with a home run and two doubles over the three games in Miami. The 2015 National League MVP should find himself as one of the frontrunners for the award once again this year, after he concluded the campaign with an MLB-best 1.044 OPS to go with 35 home runs, 101 runs, 84 RBI and 13 stolen bases.

  • Luis Torrens DH | NYM
