Athletics' Mark Canha: Slugs homer Wednesday

Canha went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in a win over the Padres on Wednesday.

The outfielder squared up on his ninth round tripper of the season in the third, the first of two blasts for the Athletics during the frame. Canha's bat has been hot over the last three games in particular, as he's 5-for-12 with two homers, four RBI and a pair of walks over that stretch.

  • Eloy Jimenez DH | TOR

White Sox's Eloy Jimenez: Jumps to Triple-A

Jimenez was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.

Jimenez continued to excel at the Double-A level with Birmingham this season, slashing .317/.368/.556 with 10 home runs and 42 RBI through 53 games. Though he's only hit .256 since June 4, it was evident the 21-year-old was ready for the next step in his professional career. The White Sox could elect to bring him up to the majors sometime later this year, but the club will gain an extra year of control on the prospect if they elect to keep him at Triple-A until 2019.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Clubs 18th homer in walkoff fashion

Stanton went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a pair of strikeouts in Wednesday's win over the Mariners.

Stanton's 18th blast was a big one, as it was a walkoff with two outs in the ninth in a game the Yankees trailed by as many as five. The 28-year-old's first season in The Bronx has been a bit of a disappointment by his lofty standards, but he may finally be turning the corner; he's hitting .450 (9-for-20) with three homers and a double over the last five games, and .286 with seven long balls in 18 games since the start of June. With that recent stretch, he's now slashing .255/.329/.504 on the year.

  • Mark Canha LF | TEX

Athletics' Mark Canha: Bounces back in June

Canha, who went 2-for-3 with a walk in a win over the Padres on Tuesday, is hitting .317 in June after posting a .183 average over 90 plate appearances in May.

The outfielder's season average had seen precipitous 78-point drop to .231 due to his May slump, but it's back up to .250 as a result of his recent success. Canha has gone deep only once during the current month, but he's actually boosted his hard contact rate from May's 33.9 percent figure to 41.2 percent over his 48 June plate appearances. Canha's 175 at-bats exceed all but the amount he logged during his rookie 2015 campaign, and he's already halfway to the career-high 16 home runs he managed that season over 485 plate appearances.

  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

Angels' Shohei Ohtani: Kicks off rehab

Ohtani (elbow) has begun a rehab regimen since being shut down June 8 with a Grade 2 UCL sprain, Avery Yang of MLB.com reports.

Thus far, Ohtani's activities have included one-armed swings, running and general strength training, but he seems unlikely to begin a throwing program until after being re-evaluated at the end of the month. While manager Mike Scioscia said Monday that the Angels' medical staff was "very optimistic" about Ohtani's prognosis and said the rookie's "swing is not impacting his ligament at all," the skipper declined to say whether Ohtani would be used as a hitter prior to resuming mound work.

  • Mark Canha LF | TEX

Athletics' Mark Canha: Goes yard Sunday

Canha went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and three RBI Sunday against the Angels.

Canha took left-hander Andrew Heaney deep in the first inning for his eighth home run of the season. He has hit lefties well this season -- he entered Sunday's game slugging .569 against them in 65 at-bats -- with six of his eight home runs coming against them. That has lifted his slugging percentage to a decent .442 mark, though this was his first homer since May 25.

  • Jorge Soler DH | LAA

Royals' Jorge Soler: Placed on DL

The Royals placed Soler (toe) on the 10-day disabled list Sunday.

The move to the DL was inevitable after Soler fouled a ball off his left foot in Friday's game against the Athletics and was later diagnosed with a fractured toe. The injury is expected to keep Soler on the shelf for at least six weeks, creating a void at a corner-outfield spot until early August. Per Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com, Paulo Orlando will receive the nod in right field Sunday, but Jorge Bonifacio could end up being the primary replacement for Soler once his 80-game suspension lapses later this month.

  • Yordan Alvarez DH | HOU

    Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Activated Saturday

Alvarez (hand) was activated off the minor-league disabled list by Double-A Corpus Christi on Saturday.

Houston's third-ranked prospect made his presence felt immediately upon his return to the lineup. Alvarez launched a pair of two-run home runs -- one in the first inning and another in the third -- before the game was called due to rain in the fifth inning.

  • Byron Buxton CF | MIN

Twins' Byron Buxton: Rehab assignment set for Tuesday

Buxton (toe) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The pain is gone from Buxton's fractured left big toe, Berardino also reports. The young centerfielder has had a very rough time when healthy this season, hitting an anemic .156/.183/.200 in 28 games. If he can finally get properly healthy, though, he should be an important player for the Twins, though strikeout issues still cap his fantasy ceiling for now.

  • Jorge Soler DH | LAA

Royals' Jorge Soler: Out at least six weeks

Soler (toe) is expected to miss at least six weeks, Maria Torres of The Kansas City Star reports.

A foul ball to the foot has interrupted what was looking like a breakout season for Soler. Specifically, he fractured the first metatarsal in his left foot. The 26-year-old will be re-evaluated in a week, and if the fracture has separated any farther, Soler will need to undergo surgery. Whit Merrifield shifted out to right field upon Soler's exit Friday, opening up second base for Ryan Goins.
