  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

Angels' Shohei Ohtani: Scores twice in win

Ohtani went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Rangers.

Ohtani got the Angels on the board with his solo shot in the second inning. He added a leadoff single in the fifth before scoring on Taylor Ward's double. The homer was Ohtani's sixth of the year, to go with 21 RBI, 20 runs scored, seven stolen bases and a .200/.294/.378 slash line in 38 games.

  • Ji-Man Choi 1B | NYM

Rays' Ji-Man Choi: Slated for batting practice

Choi (hamstring) will take batting practice at the Rays' alternate training site Sunday and Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Choi was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a Grade 1 hamstring strain and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. While it's encouraging that he'll be able to hit after just one week, manager Kevin Cash said that there are still a number of other hurdles that he'll have to clear before returning to game action.

  • Miguel Cabrera DH | DET

Tigers' Miguel Cabrera: Scratched from lineup

Cabrera was scratched from Saturday's lineup with an illness unrelated to COVID-19, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

With Cabrera out of the lineup, Harold Castro will serve as the designated hitter with Isaac Paredes taking over at third base. It's unclear whether the illness will impact Cabrera's availability going forward.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Officially not starting

Stanton isn't in Saturday's lineup against the Red Sox.

Stanton will get a planned day off Saturday as the Yankees continue to ease him back into action. Aaron Judge will rest his legs as the designated hitter with Mike Tauchman starting in right field.

  • Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Unlikely to be in lineup Saturday

Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Friday that Stanton will sit out Saturday's game against the Red Sox but will return Sunday for the series finale, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.

Both Stanton and Aaron Judge are working their way back from injuries, so the Yankees plan to manage their time carefully as they build back up. Friday marked the first time since Aug. 8 that both sluggers were in the same lineup, and the pair combined to go 2-for-9.

  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

Angels' Shohei Ohtani: Could begin throwing soon

Ohtani (forearm) could start a throwing program before the end of the regular season, the Associated Press reports.

When Ohtani was diagnosed with a strain of the flexor pronator mass in his right forearm in early August, he was given a recovery timeline of 4-6 weeks. The upper end of that estimate has since passed, suggesting that the 26-year-old could be ready to start building up his arm again. The Angels long ago committed to keeping Ohtani off the mound for the remainder of this season, so any throwing program he begins is likely to be approached with caution and with an eye toward 2021. Ohtani has stated a desire to return to the mound next season, though the organization has yet to reveal their plans for the two-way star.

  • Jorge Soler DH | LAA

Royals' Jorge Soler: Won't return over weekend

Soler (oblique) won't return during the Royals' weekend series against the Brewers, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.

Soler remains without a timetable to return as manager Mike Matheny said that he's still feeling his oblique injury a bit. He made progress late in the week as he looked good after taking live at-bats Thursday, but he needs some more time prior to returning to game action.

  • J.D. Martinez DH | NYM

Red Sox's J.D. Martinez: Steals rare base in loss

Martinez went 0-for-6 with four strikeouts and a stolen base in a 6-5 loss to the Yankees on Friday.

Martinez had a night to forget at the plate, striking out four times in one game for the second time this season. The 33-year-old marginally helped his case by unexpectedly stealing third in extra innings but otherwise was lifeless offensively. With Friday's effort, Martinez's slash line has dipped to .199/.285/.358 as he has struggled all year to manufacture runs.

  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

Angels' Shohei Ohtani: Remains on bench

Ohtani isn't in Friday's lineup against the Rangers.

Ohtani will sit for a sixth consecutive game with left-hander Wes Benjamin serving as the primary pitcher Friday. Albert Pujols will take over as the designated hitter once again.

  • Byron Buxton DH | MIN

Twins' Byron Buxton: Jumps up to leadoff spot

Buxton will lead off for the first time since 2016 Friday against the Cubs, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Buxton had exclusively hit in the bottom four spots in the order so far this season. He certainly has the speed of a traditional leadoff man, though his .290 career on-base percentage (and his .272 mark this season) make him an odd fit for the role. The move up the order makes some sense given his recent performance, however, as he's hitting .349/.349/.884 over his last 13 games.
