Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe has never enjoyed success trying to use the whole field. That is, until this year.

His career stat line hitting the ball to the opposite field is .204/.200/.313 compared to .387/.384/.735 pulling it, ESPN reports. But he has five singles, five doubles and a triple to center field this season, along with three doubles to right.

The result of his success using the entire field is that Plouffe ranked first among American League third basemen heading into Tuesday action in on-base percentage and batting average and fourth in slugging percentage.

Brewers shortstop Jean Segura managed a pinch-hit appearance in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Cardinals, going 0 for 1 with a bunt groundout.

Segura showed significant improvement Tuesday in his recovery from a blow to the face. He wasn't expected to start Wednesday, but his presence in Tuesday's win could alter the team's plans.

Brewers shortstop Jean Segura was "significantly improved" Tuesday as he continues to recover from a blow to the face Saturday, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

"I feel better," said Segura. "Pain-wise, it's OK. It's not really painful. My vision is fine. The swelling has gone down a lot."

Segura will have to pass some on-field tests before being allowed to resume play. He doubted he'd be able to play Wednesday but could return Thursday night. Segura was limited to hitting in the batting cages Tuesday.

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was expected to come off the disabled list Tuesday, but that evening's game against the Pirates has been postponed due to rain. He will likely be activated Wednesday instead, after overcoming knee surgery and appearing in three games during a minor-league rehab assignment.

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado (knee) will be in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Pirates, if the game isn't postponed due to weather. If the game is postponed, then Machado will remain on the disabled list for at least another day.

Machado hit .667 (8 for 12) with one triple, four doubles, two RBI, five runs and one stolen base in three games during a rehab assignment for high Class A Frederick.

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado's rehab took a pause on Monday, but not because of a setback. Monday's Class A Frederick game at Harry Grove Stadium was rained out, MASN Sports reports.

Machado, who is working his way back from offseason knee surgery, was expected to serve as a designated hitter Monday before the team held him out. The Orioles were expected to make a decision on his activation from the disabled list after the game.

Machado could be back from the disabled list by the middle of this week.

Brewers shortstop Jean Segura sat out a second straight game Monday against the Cardinals after accidentally getting struck in the head by a bat Saturday while Ryan Braun was warming up near the top of the dugout.

Although Sunday's game between the Twins and Tigers was postponed, Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe was on track to play after leaving Saturday's game with a triceps injury. He is expected to be in the lineup Tuesday against the Dodgers.

"Trevor Plouffe came in feeling good," manager Ron Gardenhire said Sunday, per MLB.com. "He had a miracle patch the trainers put on him. So that's a good thing. I didn't think he'd be able to go (Sunday). I was happy … that [he was]. He came in feeling great. So we can move forward from there and not have to worry about Tuesday."
