The Saints signed Hunter to the practice squad Wednesday.
Hunter was cut from the Dolphins' practice squad Tuesday, but it didn't take long for the 2025 fourth-rounder to find a new opportunity with the Saints. Lead back Travis Etienne (hamstring) is on injured reserve, and with Alvin Kamara still working through a back issue, Hunter is a candidate to be elevated to the Saints' active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Giants on Sunday.

The Dolphins waived Hunter during Sunday's cutdown day. The running back cleared waivers and joined the practice squad in his new home. Hunter was traded to the Dolphins from the Rams last Thursday but surprisingly did not make the team's initial 53-man roster. The 23-year-old sticking around in Miami likely means the team has given him a path to potential playing time.

The Dolphins waived Hunter on Sunday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
The Rams traded Hunter to the Dolphins just this past Thursday in return for wide receiver Tutu Atwell. If the team was not set on making Hunter a member of the initial 53-man roster, it is unclear why it went ahead with the trade. Hunter did not play in a preseason game with the Dolphins. The running back will now be placed on waivers. If the 23-year-old remains unclaimed, there is a good chance he will sign with the practice squad of the Rams or Dolphins.

Dolphins' Jarquez Hunter: Dealt to Miami
Hunter was traded from the Rams to the Dolphins in exchange for wide receiver Tutu Atwell on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Hunter will join Miami's roster after he was limited to 22 snaps on special teams over five contests with the Rams in his rookie campaign last season. The running back was selected in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he was never able to carve out a role for himself behind Kyren Williams and Blake Corum in Los Angeles. In his new locale, Hunter brings added depth to a backfield led by De'Von Achane, and also includes Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon (ribs).

Rams' Jarquez Hunter: Scores touchdown in preseason win
Hunter turned 12 carries into 68 yards and a touchdown while failing to haul in his lone target during the Rams' 34-0 preseason win over the Saints on Saturday.
Hunter was listed as the Rams' starting running back Saturday while Kyren Williams, Blake Corum and Ronnie Rivers were all sidelined. Hunter was effective as a rusher, with five of his 12 rushing attempts going for eight yards or more, and his last carry late in the fourth quarter resulted in a 12-yard touchdown. The 2025 fourth-rounder is up to 103 yards and one score on 21 carries through two preseason games, but he's far from a guarantee to crack the Rams' 53-man roster by the end of training camp, with Rivers being his main competition. Hunter's last opportunity for an in-game audition takes place Thursday in the Rams' preseason finale against the Chargers.

A fourth-round pick out of Auburn, Hunter's progress was stalled by the emergence of Blake Corum as the complement to veteran Kyren Williams in the Rams' backfield. The duo combined for a 404-1,998-16 rushing line over the 2025 campaign, leaving little room for Hunter or Ronnie Rivers to produce. Corum and Williams are signed through 2028 and 2029 respectively, meaning Hunter is unlikely to see much improvement in his situation in 2026, even with Rivers possibly leaving as an unrestricted free agent.

Hunter made his regular-season debut Sunday after being a healthy scratch in Week 1, but he never got an opportunity to take the field on offense. Kyren Williams (17-66-0) and Blake Corum (5-44-1) handled the entire rushing load for the Rams, and given head coach Sean McVay's proclivity to feed Williams the vast majority of touches at running back over the past few seasons, Hunter will likely find it hard to make an impact this year barring an injury ahead of him on the depth chart.
