Top Penguins News

  • Penguins' Caleb Jones: Nabs assist in loss

Jones recorded an assist in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the Rangers.

Jones has played in all three of the Penguins' games so far, serving on the third pairing. He has a helper, two shots on net, three blocked shots, four hits and a plus-1 rating. The Penguins have just three left-shot blueliners, including Jones, so he may be able to find some job security over the right-handed shooting duo of Connor Clifton and Matt Dumba. Jones' best year was 2022-23 with the Blackhawks, when he had 16 points in 73 appearances.

  • Penguins' Kris Letang: Deemed day-to-day

Letang (lower body) is day-to-day and won't participate in Sunday's practice.

Letang sustained the injury in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the Rangers. It's unclear if he will be ready to play against Anaheim on Tuesday. If Letang is unavailable, Connor Clifton or Matt Dumba could enter the lineup versus the Ducks. The 38-year-old Letang hasn't earned a point through three games this season while contributing three blocked shots and six hits.

  • Penguins' Benjamin Kindel: Nets first career goal

Kindel scored his first career goal, blocked two shots and served two PIM in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the Rangers.

Kindel was the lone bright spot in a Pittsburgh offense that fell flat Saturday. The 11th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft came through with a goal just over three minutes into the second period. He scored just the second goal that has made it past Igor Shesterkin in net this year, proving Kindel's ability to compete with the world's best. Pittsburgh will have to decide whether to keep Kindel at the NHL level or send him to WHL Calgary for the remainder of the year before the first year of his entry-level deal kicks in. If he stays with the Penguins this season, Kindel is a high-upside stash in all formats that should receive a decent chunk of playing time in the third-line center role behind NHL legends Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

  • Penguins' Arturs Silovs: Struggles in loss

Silovs saved 24 of 30 shots in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the Rangers.

After posting a shutout performance against the Rangers on Oct. 7, Silovs came back down to earth and struggled against them just four days later. He conceded at least one goal in each period, with the Rangers erupting for three goals against Silovs in the second frame. The 24-year-old Silovs now has a 1-1-0 record, a 3.00 GAA, and an .891 save percentage through two starts this season. Despite Saturday's performance, Silovs will likely maintain a near-even split with Tristan Jarry, at least while Joel Blomqvist (lower body) remains on injured reserve. This is a goaltending situation to avoid in most fantasy formats.

  • Penguins' Cruz Lucius: Pots hat trick

Lucius scored three goals on nine shots in Arizona State University's 5-2 win over Alaska-Fairbanks on Saturday.

This was the Final of the Ice Breaker Tournament hosted by Arizona State, and the hosts were able to get the win. Lucius was able to make an impact in the final after being held off the scoresheet versus Notre Dame on Friday. The 21-year-old winger is in his senior year of NCAA hockey and his second campaign with Arizona State after transferring from the University of Wisconsin. He struggled to the tune of 10 points in 19 appearances in 2024-25, but he's already earned four goals in as many games to begin 2025-26.

  • Penguins' Kris Letang: Undergoing injury evaluation

Letang is being evaluated for an injury after playing just one shift in the third period of Saturday's game versus the Rangers, Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Letang's injury flew under the radar during the game, but it'll leave his status in doubt for the start of the Penguins' three-game road trip in California. That trip begins Tuesday in Anaheim. If Letang can't suit up, Harrison Brunicke will see more ice time while Matt Dumba would be the top candidate to enter the lineup.

  • Penguins' Ville Koivunen: Returns to minors

Koivunen was reassigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday.

Bryan Rust was activated off injured reserve in a corresponding move. Koivunen has no points, one shot and one block while averaging 13:26 of ice time in two appearances with Pittsburgh this season. The 22-year-old might get another shot with the big club in 2025-26 if the Penguins run into more injury issues.

  • Penguins' Bryan Rust: Activated from IR

Rust (lower body) was activated from injured reserve Saturday.

In a corresponding move, the Penguins assigned Ville Koivunen to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. After sitting out the first two games of the 2025-26 campaign, Rust will likely make his season debut in Saturday's matchup against the Rangers. He had 31 goals, 65 points, 191 shots on net, 54 blocked shots and 62 hits across 71 appearances during the 2024-25 regular season. Rust will probably occupy a top-six role and see time on the power play in Saturday's game.

  • Penguins' Arturs Silovs: Facing Rangers

Silovs will be between the home pipes versus the Rangers on Saturday, Penguins play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff reports.

Silovs was perfect Opening Night on Tuesday, stopping all 25 Rangers' shots in a 3-0 win. The former Vancouver netminder is in a battle with Tristan Jarry for the No. 1 job in Pittsburgh, and another strong performance Saturday could move him ahead of Jarry.

  • Penguins' Benjamin Kindel: Serving in middle-six capacity

Kindel has been auditioning in a middle-six role over Pittsburgh's first two games.

Kindel has no points, two PIM, three shots, one hit and one block while averaging 14:09 of ice time, including 0:43 with the man advantage. While those numbers don't jump out, it's a fine start, and Pittsburgh isn't likely to change much for Saturday's clash against the Rangers after opening the season with back-to-back wins. The 18-year-old Kindel can play up to nine games with Pittsburgh before this season burns the first year of his three-year, entry-level deal. For that reason, Kindel probably has seven more chances to impress the Penguins before they decide whether to keep him in the NHL or return him to WHL Calgary.

  • Penguins' Filip Hallander: Collects first NHL helper

Hallander logged an assist in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Islanders.

Hallander's first NHL helper came on Harrison Brunicke's first goal at 5:41 of the second period. The 25-year-old Hallander spent the last two seasons in Sweden after a pair of campaigns in the AHL, but he's getting a look early in 2025-26. He'll likely be limited to bottom-six minutes and could rotate in and out of the lineup at times.

  • Penguins' Harrison Brunicke: Scores in second NHL game

Brunicke scored a goal on three shots in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Islanders.

Brunicke tied the game at 2-2 in the second period, answering a Kyle Palmieri tally. The 19-year-old Brunicke is getting a chance to run with an NHL job to begin 2025-26, and he hasn't looked out of place yet on the third pairing. He has a goal, four shots, two blocked shots and a plus-1 rating over two appearances. As long as he's with the big club, he should be in the lineup and will also feature on the second power-play unit.

  • Penguins' Justin Brazeau: Pots winner Thursday

Brazeau scored the game-winning goal in Thursday's 4-3 victory over the Islanders.

After tickling twine twice in Tuesday's season opener, Brazeau stayed locked in Thursday, taking a cross-ice feed from Evgeni Malkin late in the third period and beating Ilya Sorokin with a slick move to his backhand to snap a 3-3 tie. Brazeau managed just 11 goals and 22 points over 76 regular-season games split between the Bruins and Wild in his first full NHL campaign in 2024-25, but he's shown a remarkable knack for clutch play already -- he had the GWG in both Penguins victories to begin the current campaign, and six of his 19 NHL goals so far have been game-winners. The 27-year-old posted big offensive numbers in the OHL and ECHL earlier in his career and produced 18 goals and 37 points in 49 games for AHL Providence in 2023-24, and Brazeau could surprise if given the opportunity in Pittsburgh.

  • Penguins' Rickard Rakell: Two points against Isles

Rakell scored a goal and added an assist, both on the power play, in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Islanders.

The 32-year-old opened the scoring early in the first period, tucking home a backhand from the slot to finish off a scramble in front of Ilya Sorokin, and Rakell then helped set up a Sidney Crosby tally midway through the second. Rakell is coming off a career-best 2024-25 season that included nine goals and 19 points on the power play, and while Pittsburgh's overall roster may be shaky, skating on the top PP unit with Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang should allow him to maintain a strong fantasy floor.

  • Penguins' Sidney Crosby: Two-point effort in win

Crosby produced a goal and an assist, both on the power play, in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Islanders.

After helping to set up Rickard Rakell for a goal in the first period, Crosby tapped home his first tally of the season on a feed from Evgeni Malkin midway through the second. Crosby was held off the scoresheet in Pittsburgh's season opener Tuesday, but he's topped 90 points in each of the last three campaigns, and there's little reason to think the 38-year-old superstar will suddenly see his numbers fall off a cliff in 2025-26.

... See More ... See Less
  • Penguins' Evgeni Malkin: Pockets three helpers in win

Malkin delivered three assists, two on the power play, in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Islanders.

After helping the Pens take advantage of power-play situations in the first and second periods, Malkin made his biggest impact on the game when he sprung Justin Brazeau for the game-winner late in the third. There has been some suggestion 2025-26 will be Malkin's last season in the NHL, but the 39-year-old isn't playing like someone whose tank is nearly empty -- he's come flying out of the gates this season with five helpers in Pittsburgh's first two games.

... See More ... See Less
  • Penguins' Tristan Jarry: Hangs on for win over Isles

Jarry stopped 34 shots in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Islanders.

After two back-and-forth periods, Jarry shut the door in the third and got rewarded when Justin Brazeau potted the winner with a little over five minutes left in regulation. While it was a good start to the season for the 30-year-old netminder, his spot at the top of the depth chart may not be secure after Arturs Silovs shut out the Rangers on Tuesday in the Pens' season opener. Jarry's own declining numbers don't help his case to hang onto the No. 1 job -- he posted a career-worst 3.12 GAA and .892 save percentage over 36 appearances in 2024-25.
