  • Sabres' Bowen Byram: Slated to return Friday

    Byram (undisclosed) is expected to play in Friday's preseason finale against the Penguins, Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports. Byram suffered an undisclosed injury against the Red Wings on Saturday, but he returned to the ice during Thursday's practice session and will likely have a final chance to suit up during the preseason Friday. He appeared in all 82 regular-season games for the Sabres last year and recorded seven goals, 31 assists, 117 blocked shots, 75 hits and 46 PIM while averaging 22:42 of ice time.

  • Sabres' Bowen Byram: Ruled out Wednesday

    Byram (undisclosed) won't suit up in Wednesday's exhibition contest versus the Penguins, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports. While Byram will not be available Wednesday against Pittsburgh, head coach Lindy Ruff said Monday that the left-shot blueliner will likely skate on his own Tuesday. It remains to be seen if the 24-year-old Byram will get into Buffalo's last preseason game in Pittsburgh on Friday. The 2019 first-round pick signed a two-year, $12.5 million contract in July, so he'll be a key player in the top four when healthy in 2025-26.

  • Sabres' Bowen Byram: Day-to-day with injury

    Byram suffered an undisclosed injury against Detroit on Saturday and is considered day-to-day, Heather Engel of NHL.com reports. According to head coach Lindy Ruff, Byram might be ready to skate Tuesday, so he hasn't been officially ruled out versus Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Considering it is still the preseason, the team could decide to hold the 24-year-old blueliner out a little longer to make sure he is available for Opening Night against the Rangers on Oct. 9.

  • Sabres' Bowen Byram: Avoids arbitration

    Byram signed a two-year, $12.5 million contract with the Sabres on Monday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. Byram had been involved in plenty of trade and offer-sheet speculation recently, but the previously restricted free agent is now tied into Buffalo through 2026-27. The No. 4 overall selection in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft had a career year in 2024-25, generating seven goals, 38 points, 116 blocked shots and a plus-11 rating over 82 games. The 24-year-old blueliner also set a new high-water mark in average ice time (22:42), and his role could continue to grow if he receives top-pairing minutes alongside Rasmus Dahlin in 2025-26.

    Byram notched two assists, two shots on goal and two blocked shots in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Bruins. Byram has gotten on the scoresheet in just two of the last 10 games, but both instances have been two-assist performances. He helped out on the first goal of Tage Thompson's hat trick as well as the game-winner by Jason Zucker in Sunday's win. Byram is up to 37 points (seven goals, 30 assists), 86 shots on net, 109 blocked shots, 71 hits, 46 PIM and a plus-12 rating over 76 appearances in what's been easily the best year of his career.

    Byram put up two assists in a 4-3 shootout victory over Vegas on Saturday. Byram has three assists in his last two games, and he has a career-high 32 points (seven goals, 25 assists) in 65 outings. Most impressively, he made a great play in the last 30 seconds of the game that allowed Rasmus Dahlin to score the game-tying goal with 14 seconds left. Byram is an elite skater who handles the puck well, but to this point in his career, he has struggled to remain healthy and on the ice. Knock on wood, but Byram is on pace to best his career-best 73 appearances set last season. His value will rise in the future when he gets more power-play time.

    Byram held a plus-2 rating and recorded one shot on goal in 24:59 of ice time in Monday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Canadiens. Byram's streak of futility has reached five games, and there are some concerns that perhaps the 23-year-old, who's never appeared in more than the 59 NHL games he has this season, could be wearing down. However, Byram has still usually been contributing positively to games, like Monday when he was a plus-2, and no point drought of his has lasted longer than five games this season. Still playing on the left side of Rasmus Dahlin and on the power play, expect his slump to end soon.
