Gauthier wasn't going to make the Penguins' Opening Night roster considering the depth ahead of him between the pipes. The 25-year-old backstop could spend most of the year with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, though he might also get a look with ECHL Florida for a larger role.

Gauthier signed a one-year, two-way contract with Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
Gauthier posted a 21-9-5 record with a 2.09 GAA, a .929 save percentage and three shutouts in 36 regular-season appearances for ECHL Wheeling in 2025-26. He also went 9-8 with a 2.23 GAA and a .922 save percentage during the 2026 Kelly Cup Playoffs. The 25-year-old will probably spend most, if not all, of the 2026-27 campaign in the minors.

Gauthier was able to serve as the backup against the Panthers on Sunday, but he won't be making his NHL debut any time soon. If Stuart Skinner (upper body) isn't ready to face the Devils on Thursday, fantasy managers can likely expect Sergei Murashov to be elevated from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton -- which means the 25-year-old Gauthier figures to spend the rest of the year in the minors.
