Capitals' Matt Roy: Trending toward return
Roy (lower body) could return to the lineup as early as Tuesday against the Kings, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.
After missing the last six games due to a lower-body injury, Roy returned to Washington's top defense pairing in Monday's practice. He hasn't earned a point in two appearances this season, but he has registered five hits and five blocked shots. If Roy is ready for Tuesday's matchup against the Kings, the Capitals will need to activate the 31-year-old blueliner from injured reserve.

Capitals' Matt Roy: Questionable for Saturday
Head coach Spencer Carbery said Friday that Roy (lower body) is questionable for Saturday's game against the Devils, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.
Roy has been sidelined since early October due to his upper-body injury, but he appears to be close to returning to game action. Even if he doesn't get the green light to suit up against New Jersey, it seems possible that he'll be cleared to return at some point next week. Across his first two regular-season appearances, he was held scoreless with five hits and five blocked shots while averaging 18:26 of ice time.

Capitals' Matt Roy: Placed on injured reserve
Roy (lower body) was designated for injured reserve Monday.
Roy has already missed enough time to be eligible to come off injured reserve at any point, but the fact that he hasn't been cleared for contact points to him missing at least the upcoming back-to-back against Carolina and Montreal on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. While Dylan McIlrath has been playing in Roy's stead, the Caps called up Justin Holl, who could find himself in the lineup instead.

Roy (lower body) isn't expected to play against Seattle on Sunday, according to Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network.
Roy remains day-to-day and will miss his third straight game. He has been skating on his own and might be ready to return to the lineup soon. Roy hasn't earned a point in two appearances this season, but he has registered five hits and five blocked shots.

Capitals' Matt Roy: Ruled out for Friday
Roy (lower body) won't play in Friday's game against the Rangers, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.
Roy will be unavailable for a second consecutive game due to a lower-body injury he sustained during Saturday's loss to the Lightning. However, head coach Spencer Carbery said Friday that Roy is "coming along" and remains day-to-day. Roy hasn't yet resumed skating on his own, so it's not yet clear whether he'll be in the mix to suit up for Sunday's game against Seattle.

Capitals' Matt Roy: Won't play Wednesday
Roy (lower body) will not be available versus the Penguins on Wednesday, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.
Roy has yet to get his name on the scoresheet through the Capitals' first two games and will now have to wait a little while longer. The veteran blueliner has been labeled day-to-day, so he could return at any point, perhaps even Friday versus the Rangers. In his stead, Dylan McIlrath will slot into the third pairing for Washington.

Roy (lower body) is day-to-day, per Sammi Silber of The Hockey News on Monday.
Roy didn't participate in Monday's practice after getting hurt in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay. If the 31-year-old Roy isn't available for Wednesday's home opener against Pittsburgh, Dylan McIlrath will probably make his 2026-27 debut.

Capitals' Matt Roy: Taking part in informal skates
Roy participated in Friday's informal skates, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.
Roy scored just two goals in 79 regular-season games last year, missing the 20-point threshold for the first time since 2020-21. The 31-year-old blueliner should be capable of getting back over that threshold despite not having a role with the man advantage.

Roy recorded two assists in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Flyers.
The veteran blueliner had a hand in tallies by Alex Ovechkin in the first period and Tom Wilson in the third. It was Roy's first multi-point performance since Dec. 3, when he produced three helpers against the Sharks. He has produced two goals and 19 points, 130 blocked shots, 109 hits, 90 shots on net and a plus-14 rating in 72 games this season. Roy posted an assist, two blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Rangers.
The helper snapped a 10-game slump for Roy. The 30-year-old defenseman continues to be a steady source of physical play in a top-four role, but his offense can waver. For the season, he has 11 points, 52 shots on net, 50 hits, 85 blocked shots and a plus-16 rating over 40 appearances. He's a little behind the scoring pace that has seen him average 25 points per year over the last three regular seasons.

Roy is on track to top the 20-point mark for the fifth year in a row, but he might miss out on the 100-hit threshold.
