  • Sabres' Alex Lyon: Comes up short in OT

Lyon made 18 saves in Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Bruins. Buffalo outshot the home squad 40-22 on the night, but Boston made its chances count in regulation and then got the only three shots on net in OT. Lyon's strong start to the season may be fading -- he's allowed 14 goals on 125 shots (.888 save percentage) while going 1-1-2 over his last four outings, as he works in a timeshare with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.

  • Sabres' Alex Lyon: First goalie off

Lyon was the first goalie off during Thursday's morning skate, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports, indicating that he'll draw the road start against Boston. After beginning the season as the Sabres' primary netminder, Lyon has lost out on some playing time recently since Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is now healthy. However, Lyon will be in the crease for the third time in the Sabres' last four games. Lyon made a start in Boston on Oct. 11, turning aside 28 of 30 shots (.933 save percentage) in an overtime loss.

  • Sabres' Alex Lyon: Falls to Jackets in OT

Lyon made 35 saves in Tuesday's 4-3 overtime loss to Columbus. The Sabres had 2-1 and 3-2 leads, but Lyon shouldn't shoulder the blame for any of the pucks that got past him. The veteran netminder continues to see a high volume of rubber behind a shaky Sabres defense, getting peppered with at least 30 shots in all eight of his starts en route to a 3-4-1 record, 2.77 GAA and .919 save percentage. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made his season debut Saturday after recovering from a lower-body injury. It's a crowded crease situation with Colten Ellis also in the mix, but Lyon has built a strong case for himself to maintain a significant role.

  • Sabres' Alex Lyon: Wobbles in big win

Lyon made 32 saves in Wednesday's 8-4 win over the Senators. The veteran netminder wasn't exactly sharp, giving up two goals early in the third period to make things interesting after the Sabres had taken a 5-2 lead into the second intermission, but his teammates made sure the game never got any closer. Lyon is handling No. 1 duties while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (lower body) is on the shelf, starting all four Buffalo games to begin the season and going 1-3-0 with a 3.05 GAA and .911 save percentage, but UPL returned to practice Tuesday and could be ready for his 2025-26 debut soon.

Lyon's skills are better suited for backup duty, but he did put up a 2.81 GAA in 30 games last season.

Lyon will patrol the blue paint for Friday's preseason finale on the road versus the Penguins, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports. Lyon will step in after Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (lower body) was injured in Wednesday's preseason. At this point, if Luukkonen can't play in the season opener versus the Rangers on Oct. 9, then it looks like Lyon will guard the cage instead -- though Alexandar Georgiev could still be an option.

Lyon put up decent numbers in Detroit last season, going 14-9-1 with a 2.81 GAA, .896 save percentage and one shutout in 30 regular-season outings. The problem for Lyon was the crowded goalie room with the Red Wings, a situation that won't be much different in Buffalo, as Devon Levi is pushing to be a full-time NHL option.

Lyon will start on the road versus the Lightning on Friday, per the NHL media site. Lyon allowed three goals on 10 shots in his last outing, getting pulled early in the second period March 27 versus the Senators. • Red Wings' Alex Lyon: Pulled early in second period

Lyon allowed three goals on 10 shots before being pulled 1:33 into the second period of a 4-3 loss to Ottawa on Thursday. Since Petr Mrazek's arrival in trade, Lyon has been watching most games from the press box. He got this start after Mrazek got hurt this week, but Lyon failed to impress. Fantasy managers should avoid Lyon, as the Red Wings don't help their netminders much, and they're 3-7-0 in their last 10 games despite their attempt to earn a wild card.

  • Red Wings' Alex Lyon: Picks up OT win

Lyon stopped 24 of 28 shots in Sunday's 5-4 overtime win against the Ducks. Lyon's first appearance since Feb. 8 was highlighted by a late collapse of two goals against in the final two and a half minutes of regulation, which allowed the Ducks to send the game to overtime. With the win, Lyon is up to an 11-6-1 record with a 2.74 GAA and a .902 save percentage. The 32-year-old has been effective in his 23 outings this season while backing up Cam Talbot. The Red Wings have a three-game week ahead of them, meaning Lyon will likely tend the twine for at least one contest since the team has alternated goalie starts between Lyon and Talbot throughout February.
