Top Brent Celek News

  • Brent Celek: Enjoying retirement

Celek officially retired from the NFL in August 2018, Zach Berman of The Athletic reports.

Celek was released by the Eagles in March 2018 and opted to called it a career prior to the start of the regular season. The 34-year-old totaled 398 receptions for 4,998 yards and 31 touchdowns across 11 seasons in Philadelphia.

  • Brent Celek: Released by Eagles

The Eagles have released Celek, ESPN.com reports.

With fellow tight end Trey Burton slated to sign with the Bears, the Eagles will need to add depth at the position, but Zach Ertz, who caught 74 passes in 14 games in 2017, does at least remain with the Super Bowl champs. Celek caught just 13 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown this past season, but the 33-year-old figures to catch on elsewhere, where his blocking prowess could remain an asset.

  • Eagles' Brent Celek: Not retiring

Celek, who has a cap hit of $5 million for the 2018 season, doesn't intend to retire, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Celek has missed just one game in his 11-year career, but his salary and associated costs to the Eagles' financials forecast a restructure of his current contract with fellow tight end Trey Burton set to explore unrestricted free agency in the offseason. Nearly seven years Celek's junior, Burton's receiving ability will be valuable on the open market after striking for five touchdowns last season. Celek's veteran status certainly is valuable within Philadelphia's blocking schemes, but a pay cut may be required to remain with the only organization he's ever known.

  • Eagles' Brent Celek: Finishes with career-low yardage total

Celek finished the 2017 regular season with 13 receptions on 24 targets for 130 yards and a touchdown.

The 33-year-old took a pay cut before the season to remain with Philadelphia and it paid off big time with a Super Bowl win. Unfortunately, with Zach Ertz and Trey Burton ahead of him in terms of target share, the Cincinnati product's numbers also took a hit. Celek has a year remaining on the three-year deal he signed in 2016 and could be in line for an uptick in production if Burton leaves in free agency, but it is Ertz's health alone that will determine whether any other tight end on this team is relevant in 2018.

  • Eagles' Brent Celek: Role evaporates in Ertz's return

Celek wasn't targeted while playing 23 of the Eagles' 68 offensive snaps (34 percent) in Sunday's 34-29 win over the Giants.

Both Celek and Trey Burton logged over 50 percent snap shares in last week's victory over the Rams while Zach Ertz (concussion) was sidelined, but the former two players unsurprisingly saw their usage decline Sunday with Ertz back in the fold. While Celek was able to score his first touchdown of the season against Los Angeles while getting targeted three times, he worked almost exclusively as a blocker this week with Ertz and Burton representing the team's clear top two receiving options at tight end. It's hard to envision Celek having a meaningful role in the Eagles' passing attack the rest of the way so long as his competition remains healthy.

  • Eagles' Brent Celek: Targeted twice in opener

Celek caught one of two targets for 11 yards in Sunday's win over Washington.

With Zach Ertz and Carson Wentz's rapport evident since late last season, Celek is more of a blocking tight end for the Eagles at this point in his career. It is worth noting that the eight-year veteran saw more snaps and targets than Trey Burton, who had surpassed Celek as a receiving option last season. Nevertheless, Celek probably won't contribute much to fantasy teams this season.
