Terence Newman: Announces retirement
Newman has decided to retire after 15 NFL seasons, Josina Anderson of ESPN reports.
Newman played for the Cowboys, Bengals and Vikings over the course of his career. In 16 games with Minnesota in 2017 he recorded 35 tackles and five passes defensed, including an interception. He turns 40 on Tuesday and may have called it a career because of his age or because he was likely to be relegated to a depth role with the Vikings in 2018.

Vikings' Terence Newman: Returns to Minnesota
Newman agreed to a contract to return to Minnesota for 2018, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Newman played in every game for the Vikings last season, logging 560 defensive reps in the process as he split time with Mackensie Alexander in the nickel cornerback role. However, Newman may have a reduced role at age 40 and with the Vikings taking Mike Hughes with the 30th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Vikings' Terence Newman: Would like to play another season
Newman would like to play another season, Ben Goessling of The Star Tribune reports. "I want to have an opportunity to play for a Super Bowl Championship," Newman said Thursday. "I want to get over that hurdle. That was my first NFC championship I've played in, in 15 years. I've never made it past the divisional round. I've never been to a championship game. I want to be able to have an opportunity to win a ring. It's that simple."
Newman will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason so he has the opportunity to go where he pleases, in his case wherever he feels he has the best chance to win a ring. According to the veteran cornerback, who will be 40 next season, money is not the objective of his next deal. Newman played in every game for the Vikings last season, logging 560 defensive reps in the process, so there is clearly something left in the tank for the oldest cornerback in the league.

Vikings' Terence Newman: Records 35 tackles in 2017
Newman recorded 35 combined tackles and one interception in 2017.
Newman still managed to be a factor in his incredible 15th season, spending most of his playing time defending the slot. The 39-year-old veteran was able to play in all 16 regular season games as well as both of the Vikings' postseason contests, suggesting that he still has fuel in the tank. Newman came into the season on a one-year deal, so he would need to re-sign or test free agency in order to play next year.

Vikings' Terence Newman: Will play Sunday
Newman (foot) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Saints.
Newman was limited in practice throughout the week as he dealt with a minor foot injury, but the 39-year-old cornerback will be able to play in the divisional round. Expect Mackensie Alexander to provide depth at the nickel spot as well.

Vikings' Terence Newman: Questionable to play Saints
Head coach Mike Zimmer said Newman (foot) was a limited participant in Friday's practice and will be listed as questionable for Sunday's NFC divisional-round game against the Saints, Courtney Cronin of ESPN reports.
Newman was also a limited participant in Wednesday's practice before entirely sitting out Thursday's session. If he isn't able to play Sunday, Mackensie Alexander would presumably gobble up the majority of snaps as the primary nickel cornerback.

Vikings' Terence Newman: Grabs first INT of season
Newman recorded one solo tackle, two pass breakups and one interception Sunday against the Bengals.
This was Newman's first interception since Week 3 of the 2016 season. The veteran corner doesn't often play full workloads, as he logged just 36 of 55 possible defensive snaps Sunday. Newman has just two tackles in his last four games, so although this was a nice showing, don't expect a replication in Week 16 against the Packers.

Vikings' Terence Newman: Begins season as slot corner
Newman played 41 snaps and worked as the slot corner ahead of Mackensie Alexander in Monday's win over the Saints, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. He had four total tackles.
It looks like Newman will get more playing time as a result. However, we'd expect the Vikings to be judicious with the 39-year old's playing time later in the season.

Vikings' Terence Newman: Likely to move to backup role
Newman appears set to be used as a backup or third-cornerback role with Trae Waynes moving into the starting lineup opposite Xavier Rhodes, ESPN reports.
Newman could battle Mackensie Alexander for the slot cornerback role, but most of the talk appears to be that Newman will move to a reserve role. However, neither Alexander nor Waynes are established enough as starters that Newman couldn't take over a larger role if either struggle.
