Barner sits atop a Seahawks tight end depth chart that's unchanged from last season heading into the 2026 regular season, John Boyle of the team's official site reports.
The Seahawks won the Super Bowl last season with a tight end room consisting of Barner, Eric Saubert, Elijah Arroyo and Nick Kallerup, so it's understandable that the team decided not to rock the boat at the position. Arroyo is Barner's primary competition for pass-catching opportunities, as the 2025 second-round pick enjoyed a productive 2026 preseason after a lackluster rookie regular season in which Arroyo posted just 179 receiving yards. Barner led the position group with 52 catches for 519 yards and six touchdown receptions on 68 targets during the 2025 regular season.

Seahawks' AJ Barner: Not used in preseason opener
Barner was rested for Seattle's 17-7 preseason loss to the Cowboys on Saturday.
Most of Seattle's starters sat out Saturday's preseason opener, with Barner among them. Backup TEs Elijah Arroyo, Nick Vannett and Nick Kallerup each had one catch Saturday, and Eric Saubert also is competing for a roster spot at the position. Barner seems entrenched atop the depth chart on the heels of a sophomore regular season in which he caught 52 of 68 targets for 519 receiving yards and six touchdowns, though Arroyo was a second-round pick in 2025 and is hoping to earn a larger role in his second season, much like Barner did a year ago.

Barner's availability to open camp is a positive early sign after he missed offseason workouts due to a pair of undisclosed surgeries. The 2024 fourth-rounder is looking to defend his role as the Seahawks' clear top tight end in a room that also includes second-year option Elijah Arroyo. Seahawks' AJ Barner: Sidelined at OTAs
Barner (undisclosed) is not participating in OTAs on Wednesday while recovering from what Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald alluded to as offseason procedures, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reports.
Barner played through shoulder and ankle injuries last season, but he nonetheless suited up for all 17 regular-season games while totaling a 52-519-6 line on 68 targets. The 2024 fourth-rounder also operated as the TE1 for all three of the Seahawks' postseason games. Macdonald said Barner will "probably" be available for training camp and is "itching to get out there." With Barner sidelined for OTAs, however, 2025 second-round pick Elijah Arroyo has reportedly impressed and begun taking a step forward in his development. While Barner remains No. 1 tight end for Seattle's offense entering the 2026 campaign, it's possible Arroyo will earn an increased target share in Year 2.

Seahawks' AJ Barner: Scores lone offensive touchdown
Barner caught all four targets for 54 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 29-13 win over the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
All four of Barner's catches went for first downs, and he finished second on the team in receiving yards behind Cooper Kupp (61). Barner's first postseason touchdown -- a 16-yard reception where he was wide open -- essentially put the game away for the Seahawks in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks trusted the second-year tight end with blocking and pass-catching duties all season, and he finished with 58 receptions for 586 yards and seven touchdowns across 20 games, including the postseason. He should be the leader for the No. 1 TE role in 2026 despite the addition of Elijah Arroyo -- a second-round pick in 2025.

Seahawks' AJ Barner: Quiet in win
Barner caught two of three targets for 13 yards in Sunday's 31-27 win over the Rams in the NFC Championship Game.
Barner didn't record a catch in the NFC divisional-round win over the 49ers, and he had a limited role in this contest despite playing 64 of 67 offensive snaps. The second-year tight end reeled in six touchdown passes over 17 regular-season games, so he'll have some upside due to his role in the Super Bowl versus the Patriots.
