Anthony Richardson Respects Decision to Start Daniel Jones

Player Outlook
Anthony Richardson was the absolute worst statistical passer in 2024, in terms of accuracy on short passes. Daniel Jones was better. The best-case scenario for Warren probably involves Jones starting. Bleak times in Indianapolis. The Colts have assembled a "basketball lineup" of diverse types of size/speed athletes, but the question remains: can the QB play facilitate receiving volume? The player who draws targets in the most-similar vicinity to Warren was the best Indy pass-catcher last year. Josh Downs is electric. Among players with 300+ routes run in 2024, only Malik Nabers drew targets on a higher percentage of routes than Downs. Indy's investment in Warren signals that he'll be an important part of the offense, but when it comes to actually projecting his stats, several problems arise. Warren is not worth considering until the Round 10 range of your drafts.

  • Colts' Tyler Warren: Splash play on one catch

Warren secured one of three targets for 25 yards in the Colts' 23-19 preseason loss to the Packers on Saturday afternoon. The talented rookie was overthrown by Daniel Jones on third down to close out the Colts' first possession, but Warren bounced back with his 25-yard grab on the second drive to push the ball to the Packers' 11-yard line. Warren has played a first-team role in both of his preseason games to date and is poised for a significant role as the clear top pass-catching option at tight end to open his career.

  • Colts' Tyler Warren: Listed as starter

Warren is listed as the lone starting tight end on the Colts' initial preseason depth chart. The preseason depth charts may not mean much, but there are other indicators of Warren handling a large role right away rather than being eased into things. Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said Friday that he wants to "try a bunch of different stuff" with Warren and "give him a bunch of shots at a bunch of different aspects of playing offensive football," per The Associated Press. The 14th overall pick likely will get playing time in Thursday's preseason opener against Baltimore, as QBs Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones both are scheduled to play (amid their competition for the starting job).

  • Colts' Tyler Warren: Could have versatile offensive role

Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said Friday that Warren is being prepped for a versatile role in the team's offense, per NFL.com. "We're going to try a bunch of different stuff with him, give him a bunch of shots at a bunch of different aspects playing offensive football," Cooter stated. It comes as no surprise that Indianapolis wants to take advantage of Warren's versatile skill set, as he not only tallied 1,233 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air in his final college season but also recorded 218 rushing yards and four scores on 26 carries. The 6-foot-5 tight end has had "a lot on his plate" during training camp, according to Cooter, and he's already lined up in the backfield on some plays. Any regular-season work Warren gets as a ball carrier can only help his fantasy value, though he's plenty capable of being a top tight end from the get-go based solely on his talent as a pass catcher. In terms of that role, Warren has experienced some drops early in camp but also made what head coach Shane Steichen called "an incredible catch" Thursday night, reaching out for the football with one hand and securing it while falling down.

  • Colts' Tyler Warren: Links up with Indianapolis

The Colts selected Warren in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, 14th overall. Warren was a standout player at Penn State who didn't truly break out until his senior season. He had 49 catches for 606 yards and 11 touchdowns in his first three seasons and then exploded for 104 catches for 1,233 yards and eight touchdowns in 2024. Penn State also got him involved in the run game in '24 with 26 rushes for 218 yards and four touchdowns en route to winning the Mackey Award. It's rare for a college tight end to command that type of share in the offense; he drew 31.6 percent of Penn State's targets. He had plenty of manufactured touches that won't translate in the NFL, but Warren is able to pull off just about any function that an NFL offense can conceive. He's 6-foot-6 and 256 pounds, which signals he can play all three downs. Fantasy managers may have some concerns about the immediate production with Indianapolis' current quarterback situation. It's not exactly apples to apples, but managers had similar concerns with Brock Bowers going to the Raiders last season.
