Should the Colts Start Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones?

Player Outlook
Anthony Richardson will compete with Daniel Jones for the Colts' starting job this season, which is a quarterback battle to watch in training camp. If Richardson is named the starter then he's worth drafting with a late-round pick in all leagues. There's still plenty of potential for Richardson to be a standout Fantasy quarterback, but he has to prove it first -- in Fantasy and reality. And it doesn't help that he had a shoulder injury in June that will limit his work in minicamp. In 2024, Richardson played in 10 healthy games, and he scored at least 22.2 Fantasy points in four of them. In those 10 games, he was on pace for 2,963 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, 20 interceptions, 808 rushing yards, and 10 touchdowns. He's flawed as a passer, especially with a career completion percentage of 50.6. But his rushing ability is what helps his Fantasy stock if he can be a starter for a full season. And this offseason he spent time with the same private quarterback coach who helped Josh Allen, so hopefully that will pay dividends. The Colts also added a new weapon in tight end Tyler Warren with a first-round pick in the NFL Draft, and Richardson has a solid receiving corps with Warren, Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce. We'll see if Richardson can beat out Jones for the starting job, and then it could be a breakout season for Richardson if he remains the starter all year.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Won't play in preseason finale

Richardson won't play in Saturday's preseason finale against the Bengals, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Coach Shane Steichen noted Thursday that he doesn't want to risk anything with Richardson in the team's exhibition finale, with an eye toward keeping the QB healthy and available in the event that starter Daniel Jones misses any time down the road. As for Saturday's contest, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis notes that both Riley Leonard and Jason Bean are slated to play a half.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Solid following Jones in loss

Richardson completed six of 11 passes for 73 yards and rushed once for nine yards in the Colts' 23-19 preseason loss to the Packers on Saturday afternoon. Richardson had some additional pressure coming into the game after Daniel Jones finished off his time in the contest with a sharp drive, but the third-year signal-caller responded by leading a 12-play, 90-yard scoring march that culminated in a three-yard touchdown run by Tyler Goodson. The 2023 first-round pick had five completions during the possession, including 21- and 18-yard connections with Drew Ogletree and Ashton Dulin, respectively, on consecutive plays. Richardson's second and final drive also resulted in points -- via a field goal -- despite him going just 1-for-4 through the air, as the Colts gained possession on the Packers' 22-yard line following a fumble recovery. With both quarterbacks apparently very close in their job battle, next Saturday's road preseason finale might serve as the final installment in the competition between Jones and Richardson to open the regular season as the starting signal-caller.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Set to come in after Jones vs. GB

Head coach Shane Steichen said Sunday that Richardson's scheduled to be the second quarterback into Saturday's preseason game against the Packers after Daniel Jones, Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star reports. The team plans for Jones to start and play a couple of series before Richardson gets the rest of the first half. It's encouraging that Richardson will get right back in there after exiting on the second drive of Indianapolis' preseason opener against the Ravens due to a dislocated right pinkie finger. There doesn't seem to be much daylight between Richardson and Jones in the battle for the Colts' starting quarterback job.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Practicing Saturday

Richardson (finger) participated in practice Saturday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. This was the expectation for Richardson, who sustained a dislocated right pinkie finger during Thursday night's preseason opener, but we'll await further reports detailing the QB's level of activity during Saturday's session. Either way, the fact that he's already back on the field and throwing is a good sign for the 2023 first-rounder, who is competing with fellow signal-caller Daniel Jones for the Colts' Week 1 starting assignment.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: May practice Saturday

Richardson (finger) could return to practice as soon as Saturday, Stephen Holder of ESPN reports. Richardson sustained a dislocated right pinkie finger during Thursday night's preseason opener, but Holder notes the Colts medical staff was able to pop the joint back into place and the QB began testing his ability to grip a football in the hope of returning to the contest. With Richardson's subsequent X-rays having come up negative, it looks he has a chance to practice Saturday, a scenario that would allow him to continue competing with fellow signal-caller Daniel Jones for the team's Week 1 starting assignment.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Deemed 'day-to-day' by coach

Coach Shane Steichen said after Thursday's preseason loss at Baltimore that Richardson is "day-to-day" due to the right pinky finger he dislocated during the contest, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Per Garafolo, Steichen acknowledged that his plan for Richardson and Daniel Jones in their ongoing quarterback competition may need to be reconsidered, as Richardson started but received far less playing time than anticipated due to the big hit he took from Baltimore defender David Ojabo in the first quarter. Jones is slated to start Indianapolis' next preseason game Saturday, Aug. 13 against the Packers, but if Richardson isn't cleared for action then, rookie sixth-round pick Riley Leonard and perhaps even Jason Bean may see more snaps than expected.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Dislocates finger

Coach Shane Steichen told Larra Overton of the Colts' official site that Richardson sustained a dislocated finger on his right hand during Thursday's preseason contest at Baltimore and doesn't have a timetable for his return, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports. Richardson and Daniel Jones have been embroiled in a QB competition since the start of the offseason program, but Richardson got the first chance to lead the Colts offense this preseason. Unfortunately for Richardson, he took a big hit from Ravens defender David Ojabo in the first quarter, exited the game and was ruled out not long afterward. Considering his injury history as a pro, it's unclear when Richardson may be cleared for on-field work, let along game action.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Starting preseason opener

Colts coach Shane Steichen said Tuesday that Richardson will start Thursday's preseason game at Baltimore and play until midway through the second quarter, Angela Moryan of WISH News 8 reports. Steichen said Daniel Jones will finish out the first half Thursday and then start the next week's exhibition against Green Bay while also playing into the second quarter. Reports out of Indianapolis training camp suggest it's been a close competition, with both QBs starting slowly before improving at the end of July and into August. A strong performance Thursday could make Richardson the favorite to start in Week 1, if he isn't already.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: QB competition remains close

The Colts' quarterback competition in training camp between Richardson and Daniel Jones remains tight, Stephen Holder of ESPN reports. On that subject, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports that coach Shane Steichen calls the ongoing job battle "neck and neck." After what Zak Keefer of The Athletic describes as "sloppy starts" in training camp from both signal callers, he notes that Richardson was sharper during the team's first two padded practices while displaying improved accuracy on his throws in that span. Ultimately, Steichen has indicated that a decision on who will draw the Week 1 start will come down to consistency, both in terms of preparation and performance, and it figures to be some time before that call is made.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Shares first-team snaps with Jones

Richardson and Daniel Jones shared first-team QB snaps during Wednesday's opening training camp practice, Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star reports. The report notes that the Colts held four team periods in Wednesday's session, with Jones working with the starters for the first two, while Richardson handled the first-team snaps during the final two, which fits with coach Shane Steichen's plan to alternate the two signal-callers in training camp as they compete for the Week 1 starting assignment. Though there's a chance that Richardson could have some volume restrictions in the coming days (in particular during low-leverage portions of practice) after experiencing soreness in his throwing shoulder this summer, the plan is for the 2023 first-rounder to handle team reps, an approach that will allow him to contend with Jones in a job battle that Steichen noted is "really going to come down to who's the most consistent" this summer, JJ Stankevitz of the Colts' official site previously reported.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Ready for training camp

Colts GM Chris Ballard noted Tuesday that Richardson (shoulder) will have "no restrictions other than volume" during the initial days of training camp, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports. Per Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis, Richardson has been throwing for three weeks after missing the final two weeks of the Colts' practices in June due to soreness in his right shoulder. While the team figures to ease the 2023 first-rounder back into the mix in camp, the stage is now set for Richardson and former Giants starter Daniel Jones to share first-team reps as they compete for the Colts' top QB job.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Will be eased back in by Colts

Coach Shane Steichen expects Richardson (shoulder) back "at some point" during training camp, JJ Stankevitz of the Colts' official site reports. Richardson is bouncing back from a right (throwing) shoulder issue that didn't require surgery, and Steichen indicated that when Richardson is ready, the team will "ease him into throwing and then... go from there." Once the 2023 first-rounder resumes practicing, he figures to share reps with veteran newcomer Daniel Jones, an arrangement that was in place prior to Richardson's injury. In terms of who ends up getting the Week 1 start at QB for the Colts, Steichen noted that "it's really going to come down to who's the most consistent" as the summer progresses.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Expected back for training camp

Richardson (shoulder) won't need surgery and should be healthy for the start of Colts training camp, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Richardson did not participate in Indianapolis' minicamp that ended Thursday due to an AC joint injury to his right shoulder, and he sought a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who previously performed surgery to address the issue. The results of that second opinion appear to indicate that the 23-year-old quarterback does not need surgery and should be ready for training camp in late July. That's a major boost to Richardson's chances of opening the 2025 season as the Colts' starting QB, as newcomer Daniel Jones has ample starting experience and worked with the first-team offense while Richardson was unavailable during minicamp.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Got second opinion on shoulder

Colts coach Shane Steichen said Tuesday at the start of mandatory minicamp that Richardson (shoulder) visited Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who previously performed surgery to address his AC joint injury, for a second opinion, but that his outlook remains unchanged, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports. Richardson remains without a timeline to return, but Steichen previously expressed optimism that the 2023 first-round pick will be back "at some point" during training camp. Surgery isn't being considered as an option to address Richardson's shoulder issue. In the meantime, Daniel Jones will handle first-team reps and could stake a strong claim to the Week 1 starting role before Richardson is cleared to get back on the field.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Will miss time with shoulder injury

Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Thursday that Richardson (shoulder) is dealing with an injury and will not participate in mandatory minicamp June 10-12. Steichen said Richardson injured his right throwing shoulder during the start of OTAs last week, per James Boyd of The Athletic, specifying the same AC joint that previously required the young quarterback to undergo season-ending surgery as a rookie in 2023. Per Boyd, Steichen said it doesn't currently look like Richardson will require another surgery, also saying that the signal-caller currently has no return timetable but will hopefully be back "at some point" during training camp. As long as Richardson remains sidelined, free-agency signee Daniel Jones will be positioned to dominate Indianapolis' first-team reps, giving him significant additional opportunities to prove himself capable as the team's Week 1 starter.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Competition arrives

Richardson (back) looks slated to spend the offseason in an open competition for the No. 1 quarterback spot with Daniel Jones, whom the Colts signed to a one-year contract Wednesday, Stephen Holder of ESPN reports. General manager Chris Ballard has stated that Indianapolis will hold an open competition to determine a Week 1 starter for the 2025 campaign. That QB battle will take the form of Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, versus Jones, a 2019 first-rounder who started for New York until 2024, when he was benched and ultimately released. Richardson has struggled with both consistency and availability across two seasons in the NFL, having appeared in just four games as a rookie and 11 games in 2024, though he has displayed a higher potential ceiling than the more experienced Jones. Training camp and the preseason will prove pivotal for the careers of both Richardson and Jones, as the pair of signal-callers compete for one starting job.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: To face open competition

Colts general manager Chris Ballard said Tuesday at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine that Richardson (back) will face "an open competition" against whoever the team brings in at quarterback this offseason, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports. Ballard announced in early January that Richardson wasn't locked in atop the depth chart, but his use of the term "open competition" is a clearer indication that the QB will need to truly earn any starting reps he receives in Year 3. Joe Flacco is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, but Indianapolis could find another veteran on the open market or select a signal-caller in April's draft. Richardson missed the final two games of the 2024 campaign due to a back injury, but there have been no indications it's still an issue for him.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Will face competition in 2025

Speaking with the media Friday, Colts GM Chris Ballard said Richardson (back) will face competition at the quarterback position next season, Stephen Holder of ESPN.com reports. "We knew when we took him it was going to be a roller coaster," Ballard said of Richardson. "The number one thing we have to figure out and have to work through is he's got to stay healthy. That, to me, is the biggest question. We have to have competition at the position because competition makes you better and because he's not proven he can stay healthy for 17 games." Joe Flacco was signed to be Richardson's backup last offseason, but his one-year deal is set to expire in March, and at 40 years old (next week) he's not realistic competition. The Colts hold the No. 14 overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, and the roster has needs all over. Whichever way Ballard tries to find that quarterback competition, it's become clear that Richardson's leash is tightening in Indianapolis after he's started just 15 of a possible 34 games across his first two seasons.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Still not practicing

Richardson (back) remained sidelined at practice Thursday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Richardson was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday's walkthrough, so the QB's absence from Thursday's session puts the focus on what he's able to do Friday in terms of his availability for Sunday's season finale against the Jaguars. If Richardson is unavailable versus Jacksonville, Joe Flacco presumably would draw the Week 18 start for the 7-9 Colts.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Feeling better, could play Sunday

Richardson (back) was listed as a non-participant after Wednesday's walk-through practice, but Colts head coach Shane Steichen hopes the quarterback can play Sunday against Jacksonville, Amanda Foster of the team's official site reports. Richardson revealed Wednesday that he was barely able to walk last Tuesday because the pain from a disc issue in his back was so bad. He said he's feeling "way better" this week and will try to play in the season finale, hoping to finish out a disappointing campaign with a strong individual performance and a Colts win. Richardson also revealed that he's dealt with back spasms since eighth grade and has issues that "might be chronic," but won't necessarily require surgery, per James Boyd of The Athletic. None of this is good news for his long-term outlook, nor for his Week 18 rushing projection if he plays.
