  • Cowboys' Zion Childress: Facing extended absence

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer did not provide reporters with a return timeline for Childress (hamstring) on Tuesday, Mike Moraitis of SI.com reports.

Childress is currently recovering from a hamstring injury, and Schottenheimer indicated that the 24-year-old cornerback will be sidelined for an extended period of time. It's unclear whether Childress will be available for the Cowboys' preseason opener against the Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 15.

  • Cowboys' Zion Childress: Absent with hamstring issue

Childress (hamstring) is not participating in Saturday's practice session, Joe Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reports

Childress suffered a hamstring issue at some point during the first week of training camp. The second-year safety out of Kentucky participated in three regular-season games for the Texans last year, logging five offensive snaps and 28 special teams snaps over the contests.

  • Zion Childress: Dropped by Texans

Childress was waived by the Texans on Monday.

With rookie safety Jaylen Reed (knee) being activated to the Texans' active roster Monday, Childress was cut by Houston in a corresponding move. The 23-year-old from Kentucky didn't play a single snap for the Texans after being signed to the active roster in late September.

  • Texans' Zion Childress: Links up with Texans

The Texans signed Childress off the Cowboys' practice squad Wednesday, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Childress failed to make the Cowboys' initial 53-man roster in late August but has since been picked up by Houston. The Kentucky product will likely play a depth role in the Texans' secondary for the remainder of the season, especially after the team parted ways with veteran C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday.

  • Cowboys' Zion Childress: Pushing for starting job

Childress has made a big impression in training camp and could emerge as the starting slot corner for the Cowboys, Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News reports.

An undrafted free agent rookie out of Kentucky, Childress has worked with the first-team defense in training camp, and if he's able to handle the nickel corner spot, it would allow DaRon Bland to remain on the outside. Kemon Hall, who appeared in six regular-season games for Dallas last season purely as a special-teams player, and veteran Israel Mukuamu appear to be Childress' main competition for the job.
