NFL Rookies Competing for Starting Roles: Bhayshul Tuten for Jaguars RB1

Player Outlook
Bigsby could prove to be the best running back in Jacksonville this season, or he could be third on the depth chart behind Travis Etienne and rookie Bhayshul Tuten. The Jaguars backfield is worth monitoring in training camp, and Bigsby should be drafted with a late-round pick in the majority of leagues. If Bigsby emerges as the No. 1 running back in Jacksonville, even in a committee, he could be a solid flex option in all formats. Our view heading into training camp is Etienne will open the season as the starter, and Tuten will eventually land a prominent role, with Bigsby as a complementary option. Of course, new coach Liam Coen might favor Bigsby, and he could be a steal on draft day. In 2024, Bigsby worked in tandem with Etienne, and Bigsby averaged 8.1 PPR points per game. He had nine games with double digits in carries, and Bigsby scored at least 13.2 PPR points in three of those outings. Bigsby had an effective year running the ball at 4.6 yards per carry, but he could be limited as a receiver with seven receptions for 54 yards on 12 targets. We'll see what happens with Bigsby, Etienne and Tuten, and Bigsby could be a great value pick on draft day if he ends up as the No. 1 running back for the Jaguars this year.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: First RB into second preseason game

Bigsby rushed twice for six yards and caught his only target for 19 yards in Sunday's 17-17 preseason tie against the Saints. It was encouraging to see Bigsby contribute as a pass catcher considering he had only seven catches last season compared to Travis Etienne's 39. Bigsby played the opening drive Sunday, which culminated in a botched handoff that was credited as a Trevor Lawrence fumble, while Etienne accumulated 32 yards on four touches on the team's second possession before the starters were removed from the game. They seem headed for a backfield split come the regular season and are currently running ahead of rookie fourth-round pick Bhayshul Tuten, who scored a second-quarter touchdown with the backups. Jacksonville's final preseason game will be Saturday against the Dolphins.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Plays behind Etienne

Bigsby rushed the ball six times for 24 yards in Saturday's 31-25 preseason loss to the Steelers. He did not catch his only target. Bigsby had fine production on his limited opportunity, but his usage was the far bigger story. All of Jacksonville's starting skill-position players were on the field for the first drive, and Bigsby did not see any snaps on that possession. While that usage isn't guaranteed to continue into the regular season, it doesn't appear that Bigsby is challenging Travis Etienne for the lead role out of the backfield at this point.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Scores in season finale

Bigsby carried the ball 14 times for 39 yards and a touchdown and caught his only target for three yards in Sunday's 26-23 overtime loss to the Colts. The second-year RB split the workload in the Jaguars' backfield with Travis Etienne, and while Etienne was more productive in terms of overall yardage (60 yards on 16 touches), Bigsby's one-yard TD plunge in the first quarter was the only score either of them managed. Bigsby wrapped up the 2024 campaign with 766 rushing yards on 168 carries, good for a 4.6 YPC that was far superior to Etienne's 3.7 mark, but the latter offers more as a pass catcher. The duo seems likely to remain in a timeshare to begin 2025.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Splits backfield evenly

Bigsby rushed the ball 12 times for 50 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 19-14 loss to the Raiders. He added one reception on on one target for one yard. The Jaguars were in a tightly contested battle with the Raiders throughout the day, allowing them to stick with the ground game a bit more than is typically the case. That benefitted Bigsby, who ended the contest with two more touches than Etienne. He also had a fairly efficient showing that was highlighted by a long gain of 10 yards and a one-yard touchdown plunge late in the first quarter. A Week 17 matchup against the Titans should also be close, so Bigsby could see be in line for decent volume once again.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Out-touched 18-11 by Etienne

Bigsby rushed 11 times for 42 yards and didn't catch his only target in Sunday's 32-25 loss to the Jets. After out-touching Travis Etienne, 19-8, in Week 14 against the Titans, Bigsby returned to a complementary role against the Jets, finishing with 11 touches to Etienne's 18. They'll likely continue to work as a tandem in Week 16, when the Jaguars could have a more run-heavy game script than usual in a battle between bottom-feeders against the Raiders. Bigsby has just five catches all season, so he relies almost exclusively on rushing contributions while the versatile Etienne can play in all situations.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Retakes lead in backfield

Bigsby rushed the ball 18 times for 55 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 10-6 win over the Titans. He added one reception on two targets for seven yards. Bigsby returned from a one-game absence in Week 13 and was in a committee backfield with Travis Etienne. His usage changed significantly Sunday, as he out-touched Etienne 19-8, including 18-4 in rushing attempts. Bigsby wasn't particularly effective with the opportunity by averaging just 3.1 yards per rush with a long of 12 yards. However, he did punch in an eight-yard touchdown to tally the go-ahead score for the Jaguars, and his usage in the victory makes him a more appealing fantasy option moving forward.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Stashes (RB Preview)

Tank Bigsby's roster rate fell to 63% over the last few weeks. We don't know for sure when he's coming back, but he's not on IR, so we do expect him back. He averages 13 Fantasy points per game from Week 5 through Week 8 and has two games with more than 20 Fantasy points this season.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Will practice, optimism for Week 11

Coach Doug Pederson said Bigsby (ankle) will practice Friday, and he's optimistic the running back will play Sunday against the Lions, Demetrius Harvey of The Florida Times-Union reports. "Optimistic," Pederson said Friday morning. "But today will be a big day for him." After missing practice Wednesday and Thursday, a Friday return gives Bigsby a chance to play Sunday in Detroit. If he's cleared to play, the Jaguars likely will continue to use a three-man backfield, consisting of Bigsby, Travis Etienne and D'Ernest Johnson, leaving none as upside fantasy plays against a tough Lions run defense.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Misses another practice

Bigsby (ankle) didn't practice Thursday. After having missed consecutive practices to begin Week 11 prep, Bigsby's status for Sunday's game against the Lions is cloudy. His outlook could change if he's able to practice in any capacity Friday, but if Bigsby is held out this weekend with an eye toward giving him added healing time during the Jaguars' upcoming Week 12 bye, Travis Etienne would be in line to see added backfield snaps and touches versus Detroit.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Held out of practice

Bigsby (ankle) didn't practice Wednesday. Listed with an ankle injury on the Jaguars' official reports for much of the season, Bigsby limped off the field during the first quarter of Sunday's 12-7 loss to the Vikings. He re-entered the contest but then played just two snaps in the second half, leaving Travis Etienne as the clear leader of Jacksonville's backfield. Etienne and D'Ernest Johnson will handle the snaps out of the backfield in Week 11 if Bigsby isn't ready for the matchup with the Detroit on Sunday.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Hurts ankle Sunday

Bigsby exited Sunday's game against the Vikings due to an ankle injury, John Oehser of the Jaguars' official site reports. Bigsby was shaken up after a three-yard run midway through the first quarter, requiring assistance from trainers to get to the sideline and into the medical tent. If he's unable to return, he'll be contained to a single touch in Week 10. Travis Etienne should lead the Jaguars backfield in the meantime, with D'Ernest Johnson also on hand for RB reps.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Set for Week 10

Bigsby (ankle) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's contest against the Vikings. Both Bigsby and Travis Etienne (hamstring) were limited in practice all week, but both running backs will be available to the Jaguars offense this weekend. During this past Sunday's defeat at Philadelphia, Bigsby earned 52 percent of the snaps en route to eight carries for 22 yards, while Etienne handled a 31 percent snap share and turned five touches into 30 yards from scrimmage. The breakdown between the pair should be somewhat similar Week 10.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Still limited at practice

Bigsby (ankle) remained limited in practice Thursday. The same goes for Travis Etienne (hamstring), with D'Ernest Johnson (hamstring) now on the Jaguars' Week 10 injury report after logging a limited practice Thursday. Friday's final report will reveal the game statuses of the three running backs ahead of Sunday's game against the Vikings, but it'd be surprising if either Bigsby or Etienne were sidelined after playing through their respective injuries last weekend.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: RBs to Sit

Travis Etienne returned from his two-game absence with a hamstring injury in Week 9 at Philadelphia, and Bigsby's production fell apart since he had eight carries for 22 yards and no touchdowns or targets. Prior to that, Bigsby had scored a combined 34.4 PPR points in the two games Etienne was out. I like Etienne slightly better than Bigsby in PPR for Week 10 against the Vikings, but both guys are just flex options at best. This is a tough matchup since Minnesota is No. 6 in fewest Fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs, and Bigsby could be in trouble if the Jaguars are chasing points, given his lack of work in the passing game.
... See More ... See Less
  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Limited practice participant

Bigsby (ankle) was a limited practice participant Wednesday. Bigsby played through the ankle injury in Sunday's 28-23 loss to Philadelphia, taking a team-high eight carries for 22 yards while playing 55 percent of snaps on offense. Meanwhile, Travis Etienne (hamstring) took 72 percent of snaps in the first half but then just nine percent in the second half, barely playing after a dropped pass late in the second quarter resulted in an interception. Bigsby then got most of the snaps after halftime, but D'Ernest Johnson assumed most of the work in clear passing situations, including the final drive. The Jacksonville backfield looks messy at the moment, and a tough matchup versus the Vikings on Sunday may make Bigsby a less appealing option in fantasy lineups even if he continues to lead the Jaguars in carries.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Struggles on eight carries Sunday

Bigsby (ankle) rushed eight times for 22 yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 28-23 loss to the Eagles. Bigsby suffered from the return of Travis Etienne (hamstring) on Sunday, as neither back provided fantasy value in a tandem role. The 23-year-old Bigsby was a huge fantasy play in recent weeks with 196 rushing yards and two trips to the end zone in his previous two contests, but he struggled mightily in a split role against Philadelphia. Consider both Jaguars running backs flex plays at best heading into Week 10, with Bigsby being the better bet for a touchdown against the Vikings next Sunday.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Officially active in Week 9

Bigsby (ankle) is active for Sunday's Week 9 matchup against the Eagles. The emerging second-year back was expected to suit up after turning in a trio of limited practices throughout the week, and Bigsby's availability now is confirmed. However, unlike the previous two weeks when Bigsby was able to operate as the clear lead back and rush for 196 yards and two touchdowns in the absence of Travis Etienne (hamstring), the latter also is active Sunday and therefore will eat into the former's touches.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Gains 86 yards on 20 touches

Bigsby rushed 18 times for 78 yards while catching two of three targets for eight yards in Sunday's 30-27 loss to Green Bay. Bigsby served as the Jaguars' top back after Travis Etienne (hamstring) was deemed inactive prior to Sunday's kickoff. The 23-year-old Bigsby churned out a decent fantasy performance off of 20 touches, which bodes well for his already rising value heading into Week 9. Bigsby should remain a significant part of Jacksonville's offense heading into next Sunday's tilt against Philadelphia, irrespective of Etienne's status for that contest.

  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Stars in starting role

Bigsby rushed 26 times for 118 yards and two touchdowns and failed to bring in his only target during the Jaguars' 32-16 win over the Patriots on Sunday in London. With Travis Etienne (hamstring) inactive, Bigsby had an opportunity to handle a lead-back role that he already seemed to be building toward in recent games. The second-year back did not disappoint with the expanded opportunity, rounding out his second career 100-yard effort, both of which have come in the last three games, with touchdown runs of one and four yards in the second and fourth quarters, respectively. Given his showing Sunday and the lingering nature of hamstring injuries, Bigsby could well helm the ground attack again in a Week 8 home matchup against the Packers.
... See More ... See Less
  • Jaguars' Tank Bigsby: Expanded role looming

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said that Bigsby is in line to take on a greater role out of the backfield for Sunday's game against the Patriots in London due to Travis Etienne (hamstring) set to be inactive for the contest, Steve Wyche of NFL Network reports. Though Pederson noted that Etienne had a good week of practice before being listed as questionable heading into Sunday, the 2021 first-round draft pick ultimately couldn't shake off the hamstring injury he sustained in the Jaguars' Week 6 loss to the Bears. While Pederson is seemingly leaving the door open for Etienne to return to the lineup Week 8 versus the Packers, his absence Sunday likely leaves the door open for Bigsby to serve as the Jaguars' top option on the ground. D'Ernest Johnson is expected to have a sizable role of his own -- likely as Jacksonville's top passing-down back -- but in non-PPR formats especially, Bigsby still profiles as a strong lineup option for Week 7. Even while working behind Etienne this season, Bigsby has flashed over his 80 snaps through six games, carrying 41 times for 297 yards (7.2 average) and two touchdowns. A workload of 10-to-15 carries could be enough for Bigsby to produce a useful line for fantasy managers.
