Austin MacGinnis: Waived by Rams
The Rams waived MacGinnis on Monday, NFL.com's Andrew Siliciano reports.
Matt Gay always was the favorite to win the kicking job and now is left as the lone placekicker on the team's roster. MacGinnis has never kicked in an NFL regular-season game, but he did play in the AAF and the XFL before spending time with the Rams' practice squad in 2020.

MacGinnis signed a reserve/future contract with the Rams on Monday, Stu Jackson of the team's official site reports.
MacGinnis has yet to play a game since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018. Matt Gay has the upper hand for the 2021 competition after making 14 of 16 field-goal attempts with the Rams in 2020.

Austin MacGinnis: Shifts back to practice squad
MacGinnis reverted to the Rams' practice squad Friday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
MacGinnis was elevated from the practice squad because Matt Gay was questionable with a shoulder injury. Gay ended up playing, meaning MacGinnis was a healthy scratch. MacGinnis will remain on the practice squad for the time being.

MacGinnis (healthy scratch) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Patriots, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
The Rams elevated MacGinnis from the practice squad Thursday afternoon, and he briefly appeared in line to play against the Patriots, but it looks like Matt Gay (shoulder) has gotten the green light to suit up. MacGinnis will wait for another chance to make his NFL debut.

Rams' Austin MacGinnis: Promoted for Thursday's game
The Rams elevated MacGinnis from the practice squad to the active roster Thursday.
The transaction would seem to indicate that MacGinnis will start Thursday's game against the Patriots over Matt Gay (shoulder), who was officially listed as questionable on Wednesday's injury report. While kicking for Kentucky between 2014 and 2017 MacGinnis converted on 79.7 percent of his collegiate attempts, but he has yet to make his NFL debut.

Austin MacGinnis: Being considered for promotion
MacGinnis is being considered as a possible replacement kicker for the Rams after coach Sean McVay said that Kai Forbath (ankle) will be going on IR, Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
MacGinnis signed a deal to join Los Angeles' practice squad Oct. 27, but the Sacramento native has yet to make his NFL debut since that point. With a spot opening up at kicker due to Forbath's injury, MacGinnis is being considered to fill the opening along with recent pratice-squad signee Matt Gay. MacGinnis converted on 79.7 percent of his collegiate attempts while kicking for Kentucky between 2014 and 2017.

Rams' Austin MacGinnis: Loses kicker competition
The Rams intend to go with Sam Sloman as their kicker over MacGinnis and Lirim Hajrullahu, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.
After moving on from Greg Zuerlein, the Rams brought in a trio of kickers to compete for the opening, but the sole 2020 draftee -- Sloman was a 2020 seventh-rounder -- appears to have won the job. MacGinnis and Hajrullahu are expected to hit the waiver wire in the near future.

Rams' Austin MacGinnis: Vying for starting job
MacGinnis made four of six field-goal attempts in Wednesday's practice, Rams play-by-play announcer J.B. Long reports.
MacGinnis is currently competing with Sam Sloman and Lirim Hajrullahu to be named Los Angeles' kicker ahead of the regular season. Although he missed one of his two simulated game-winning kicks Wednesday, MacGinnis still was more accurate than Sloman, who converted only three of his six tries. As the Rams continue to rotate reps between their three options, it'll be worthwhile to track who prevails as the starter.

The team also agreed to terms with fellow kicker Lirim Hajrullahu on Monday. With Greg Zuerlein, who kicked for the Rams from 2012 through 2019, now with the Cowboys, the duo are slated to compete to be his replacement. Hajrullahu arrives via the CFL, while MacGinnis most recently played for the XFL's Dallas Renegades, going 10-for-10 on field-goal attempts through five games before the league's season was suspended.
