  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Dealing with groin issue

Cowing (groin) did not participate at the 49ers' training camp practice Tuesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Per Wagoner, coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that he expects Cowing to return to practice next week before the team travels to Australia for its regular-season debut against the Rams. In the meantime, 2025 fourth-rounder Jordan Watkins could be called on to perform punt-return duties with the first team.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Back to practice

Cowing (hip) was a full participant in Saturday's practice, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Cowing suffered a hip injury sometime around last Wednesday's training camp session and has been absent from team activities since. The wide receiver's return to health will give him a chance to compete in next Thursday's preseason showdown with the Chargers. Cowing is currently listed as the starting punt returner for the team, but the 25-year-old will likely need to once again show he is a capable option at receiver to make the 53-man roster.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Misses practice with hip issue

Cowing (hip) did not participate in Wednesday's training camp session, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

It is unclear when Cowing suffered the hip injury currently plaguing him, but the primary punt returner did come into OTAs with a hamstring issue that could be related. The longer the 25-year-old remains unable to practice, the more chances players such as Malik Turner and Jordan Watkins have to prove they are versatile options that can hold value on both the offensive and special teams units.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: On the field for OTAs

Cowing (hamstring) is participating in the 49ers' OTAs, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The wide receiver is not only participating, but he apparently looks good, per Maiocco, who called him a standout during Thursday's session, and David Lombardi of SFStandard.com, who reported that coach Kyle Shanahan said he was impressed that Cowing was in such good shape. The 2024 fourth-round pick missed the 2025 campaign with a hamstring injury that he suffered in late August.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Doesn't play in 2025

Cowing was unable to take the field during the 2025 season due to a hamstring injury.

Cowing, a 2024 fourth-round pick from Arizona, was placed on the injured reserve list in late August and missed San Francisco's entire campaign. The 25-year-old returned to full practice and nearly rejoined the 49ers' active roster for their playoff run but ultimately was unable to do so. Under contract through 2027, Cowing likely will have the opportunity to compete for a depth-role in San Francisco's wide-receiver room ahead of next season.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Ruled out vs. Seahawks

Cowing (hamstring) has been ruled out for San Francisco's divisional-round matchup versus the Seahawks on Saturday.

Cowing will not be activated off injured reserve and will now be forced to miss another game. The 2024 fourth-round pick has been sidelined for the entirety of the season with a hamstring injury but will look to make his return next week, should the 49ers advance to the NFC Championship Game.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Not playing vs. Eagles

Cowing (hamstring) has been ruled out for San Francisco's wild-card matchup versus the Eagles on Sunday.

Cowing was designated to return from injured reserve earlier in the week but won't be activated ahead of Sunday's game. The 2024 fourth-round pick missed the entirety of the regular season but will look to make his season debut next week during the divisional round, should the 49ers advance.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Questionable but still on IR

Cowing (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's wild-card game against the Eagles, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports, but the wide receiver remains on injured reserve.

Cowing would need to be activated from IR prior to Sunday's game to have a chance to suit up. The 2024 fourth-round pick missed the entire 2025 regular season due to a hamstring injury, so he's unlikely to have a substantial role even if he plays.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Returning from IR

The 49ers designated Cowing (hamstring) to return from injured reserve Wednesday.

Cowing has not played a snap in the 2025 season due to the hamstring injury he suffered during training camp. The wide receiver's return for the wild-card matchup with the Eagles would be a great for a corps that could be without No. 2 wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (PCL). Cowing will have three days to increase his practice participation and prove he is ready to suit up for Sunday's contest.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Resumes practice

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Cowing (IR, hamstring) will have his practice window opened Wednesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Cowing spent the entire 2025 season recovering from a hamstring injury that he suffered during training camp. The 24-year-old is available to return for the wild-card round against the Eagles and will likely see a mix of reps on offense and special teams should he play.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Practice window could open soon

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Cowing (hamstring) could have his 21-day practice window opened during Week 18 prep, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

Cowing has been slow to recover from the hamstring injury he sustained early in training camp, which has resulted in him spending the entire season to date on injured reserve. Shanahan had previously stated that the second-year wideout was on track to resume practicing following the 49ers' Week 14 bye, but nearly a month later, Cowing has yet to gain clearance for on-field work. Even if the 49ers elect to open Cowing's practice window at some point during the upcoming week, he's unlikely to be activated prior to Saturday's regular-season finale versus the Seahawks. A return at some point during the postseason could be on the table, however.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Expected to practice following bye

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Cowing's (hamstring) 21-day practice window will likely be opened following the 49ers' Week 14 bye, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Cowing has yet to play this season after he injured his hamstring during training camp. The 2024 fourth-round pick has dealt with hamstring issues for most of his two seasons in the league. He recorded four catches for 80 yards on very minimal playing time as a rookie last season.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Progressing in recovery

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Cowing (hamstring) is "getting close" to returning from injured reserve, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

The 2024 fourth-rounder pulled his hamstring during training camp in late July, and the injury was severe enough for Cowing to start the regular season on injured reserve. He would be eligible to return to practice once the 49ers designate him to return from IR, which could happen as soon as next week leading up to the 49ers' Week 8 clash against the Texans on Sunday, Oct. 26.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Lands on injured reserve

The 49ers placed Cowing (hamstring) on injured reserve Wednesday.

Cowing injured his hamstring in late July, which has sidelined him for the majority of training camp and all three of the 49ers' preseason games. His move to the IR means the 2024 fourth-rounder will be required to miss at least next four games, making Week 5 against the Rams on Thursday, Oct. 2 the earliest he can make his 2025 debut. The 49ers are dealing with several injuries at wide receiver, which opens the door for Junior Bergen, Robbie Chosen and Malik Turner to be elevated from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Week 1 against the Seahawks.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Could open season on IR

Coach Kyle Shanahan said this weekend that Cowing (hamstring) could be sidelined for six weeks, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Cowing missed time last summer with a hamstring injury, and he also missed a sizable chunk of this year's training camp with a pulled hamstring. It's becoming a chronic issue for the second-year wide receiver after he was unable to log any preseason playing time this summer. There's a decent chance he begins the 2025 campaign on injured reserve, which would cost Cowing at least the first four games of the regular season.

  • 49ers' Jacob Cowing: Missing practice time again

Cowing isn't practicing Wednesday after suffering a lower-body injury Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Cowing injured his hamstring during the first practice of training camp and was out for nearly three weeks before easing back into action last Tuesday. He's now absent again, with no word so far on whether it's an aggravation of the hamstring pull or a new injury altogether. Either way, the 49ers are hurting for wideout depth, with Cowing, Jauan Jennings (calf), Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and Jordan Watkins (ankle) all absent from practice. Demarcus Robinson is healthy but may soon be suspended, perhaps opening the door for Russell Gage or one of the other depth players to get a lot of snaps early in the season. Cowing is also a candidate if he's able to make it back before Jennings and Aiyuk.
