The Cardinals released Payton from the practice squad Thursday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Payton was let go to help make room for the signing of veteran wideout Javon Wims to Arizona's practice squad Thursday. The rookie out of Tennessee will now look to join up with a new team at some point this regular season.

JaVonta Payton: Lands on Arizona's practice squad
The Cardinals signed Payton to their practice squad Wednesday, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
Payton and Jeff Cotton were signed to Arizona's practice squad after the team placed JaVonta Payton (undisclosed) on the practice squad injured list. The rookie undrafted free agent joined the Cardinals in May after catching 18 passes for 413 yards and six touchdowns during his final season at Tennessee.

Arizona waived Payton on Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
Payton will look to find a practice squad opportunity if he goes unclaimed on waivers. The undrafted rookie caught 18 passes for 413 yards and six touchdowns during his last season at Tennessee.
