Cardinals' Tyler Allgeier: Love's injury opens up opportunity
Allgeier could open the regular season as the Cardinals' primary running back, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Jeremiyah Love sustained a high-ankle sprain in Thursday's preseason win over the Raiders.
The Cardinals are hoping that Love will recover in time to suit up for the regular-season opener against the Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 13, but the rookie third overall pick almost certainly won't play again during the preseason and could miss regular-season action as well since he faces a multi-week recovery timeline with less than a month to go until the season. If Love is sidelined or limited to begin the regular season, Allgeier would be in line to get the majority of backfield opportunities for the Cardinals, though James Conner (foot) or Trey Benson (knee) also could enter the mix if they recover from their respective injuries.

Cardinals' Tyler Allgeier: Sees action with starters
Allgeier rushed four times for 19 yards and wasn't targeted in the Cardinals' 27-14 preseason win over the Raiders on Thursday.
Allgeier and rookie third overall pick Jeremiyah Love were the two Cardinals running backs to log touches on the team's opening possession. Allgeier's first opportunity came after Love had seen two rush attempts and recorded a reception, but the former proceeded to rattle off consecutive seven-yard runs on his first pair of carries. Allgeier also had a five-yard rush on the Cardinals' second drive, and his team debut was an encouraging one overall. The veteran RB's exact regular-season role in a crowded backfield remains to be determined, but it's worth noting Allgeier has ample experience complementing a star back after playing alongside Bijan Robinson in Atlanta for the last three seasons.

Cardinals' Tyler Allgeier: First RB up
Allgeier has been the first running back up with Arizona's first-string offense during the early stages of training camp, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Allgeier, who inked a two-year, $12.25 million contract with Arizona this offseason, could have an early angle at the lead backfield role with veteran James Conner still not handling 11-on-11 work, though Urban notes that rookie No. 3 overall pick Jeremiyah Love got his share of reps with the first-team offense. While Love projects as the clear eventual leader of the Cardinals' backfield, Allgeier has seniority backing him for the time being and is no slouch, having averaged 4.3 yards per carry across his career. Trey Benson is also healthy and competing for a chance to factor into Arizona's backfield.
