  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Set to serve as No. 2 QB

Lance has won the Chargers' backup quarterback job, Matt Zenitz of CBSSports.com reports.

Lance will serve as the team's top reserve option behind starter Justin Herbert for the second straight season. The former completed 22 of 38 passes for 237 yards while also adding nine carries for 91 yards over the team's three preseason contests. Lance will ultimately get the nod over DJ Uiagalelei for the No. 2 role this season, and it's possible that new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel finds creative ways to get the dual-threat Lance more involved in the game plan in 2026.

  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Plays first half in loss

Lance completed 10 of 16 passes for 73 yards while rushing twice for 42 yards in Thursday's 41-17 preseason loss to the 49ers.

Lance entered the game on the second drive, taking over for Justin Herbert. The quarterback played a rather safe and uneventful half, not reaching the end zone but also not taking any sacks or turning the ball over. The Chargers scored just three points in the half, off the back of a 21-yard Cameron Dicker field goal. Despite the lackluster day, Lance will likely see a similar snap share in next Thursday's preseason game against the Rams.

  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Plays three quarters in preseason opener

Lance completed 12 of 20 passes for 164 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while rushing three times for 27 yards in Thursday's 27-7 preseason win over the Texans.

Lance played the first three quarters of Thursday's preseason opener as the Chargers rested starting QB Justin Herbert and other key starters. DJ Uiagalelei came in for the fourth quarter. Lance threw an interception on his final pass of the first half but moved the offense pretty well and tied for the team lead in rushing yards. He'll likely feature prominently in the Chargers' second preseason game, which will be Aug. 20 against the 49ers.

  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Back with Bolts

The Chargers signed Lance to a one-year contract worth up to $6.75 million Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Lance is returning for a second campaign in Los Angeles following stints with San Francisco and Dallas. As Justin Herbert's backup last season, Lance saw action in four games (including a Week 18 start versus Denver), completing 27 of 57 pass attempts for 226 yards and a 0:1 TD:INT while adding 17 carries for 85 yards. The mobile quarterback should be the frontrunner to back up Herbert.

  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Makes impact with legs Sunday

Lance completed 20 of 44 pass attempts for 136 yards and an interception while gaining 69 yards and losing a fumble on nine carries in Sunday's 19-3 loss to Denver.

QB Justin Herbert was a healthy scratch in Week 18 with the Chargers having little to play for regarding playoff seeding. This afforded Lance to make his first start of the season, and the results were mediocre as expected against one of the league's top defensive units. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft was able to put his athleticism on display by gaining 69 rushing yards. That's where the good feedback ends, as Lance completed less than half of his 44 pass attempts, with his only touchdown pass going to the other team via a pick-six in the one-sided loss. Lance will resume his backup role behind Herbert when the Chargers visit the Patriots next Sunday for the wild-card round of the playoffs.
