  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Starts final preseason game

Lance completed five of eight passes for 38 yards in Saturday's 30-23 preseason loss to the 49ers. Lance drew the start with Justin Herbert resting, though he notably played ahead of Taylor Heinicke. Lance didn't lead a scoring drive, but he did have completions of 11 and 17 yards to Jalen Reagor to account for the majority of his production. It remains to be seen if Lance or Heinicke will serve as the No. 2 quarterback in Week 1 against Kansas City, though Lance has primarily played well with plenty of opportunity this preseason.

  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Playing one or two series Saturday

Lance will start Saturday's preseason finale against the 49ers and play one or two possessions, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Lance will command the Chargers' second-team offense Saturday while the team's starters rest. Los Angeles' plan is then for Taylor Heinicke to enter in relief of Lance and play a series or two, after which DJ Uiagalelei will close out the exhibition matchup. Lance and Heinicke are in competition for the No. 2 quarterback gig behind Justin Herbert.

  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Returns from hand injury

Lance completed seven of 15 passes for 121 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday's 23-22 preseason loss to the Rams. He added four rushes for 25 yards. Lance dealt with a hand injury in the week of practice leading up to Saturday's contest, but he was able to take the field as he continues to compete for the backup job behind Justin Herbert. Lance entered the game late in the second quarter following Taylor Heinicke, suggesting he is currently third on the depth chart. Neither Lance nor Heinicke were all that impressive in their opportunity, though Lance did deliver a nice deep ball to Tre Harris late in the third quarter to set up a touchdown.

  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Expected to suit up Saturday

Head coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday that he expects Lance (hand) to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Rams, Eric Smith of the Chargers' official site reports. Lance hasn't taken team reps at practice this week while wearing a wrap on his right hand, per Kris Rhim of ESPN.com, but the injury isn't expected to sideline the 2021 first-round pick Saturday. Lance is competing with Taylor Heinicke for the backup spot behind Justin Herbert. Harbaugh indicated that all three quarterbacks will see the field Saturday.

  • Chargers' Trey Lance: Dealing with hand issue

Lance was spotted wearing a wrap/brace on his right hand at practice Wednesday, Richie Whitt of SI.com reports. Lance sat out the Chargers' team drills Tuesday before being spotted with a wrap/brace on his right hand while the team warmed up for practice Wednesday. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman told reporters that Lance's lack of participation was not about an injury, but instead it was in an effort to get starter Justin Herbert more reps. Lance's status will be worth monitoring ahead of Saturday's preseason matchup with the Rams. To this point in camp, the 25-year-old has impressed, and he's currently in a competition with Taylor Heinicke for the No. 2 QB role in Los Angeles.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Likely moving on from Dallas

Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said Lance is "probably going to be looking for something different" this offseason, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports. Lance was the Cowboys' third-string quarterback the past two seasons, after they traded a fourth-round pick for him shortly before the start of the 2023 campaign. He played decent in his one start -- a 23-19 loss to Washington in Week 18 of this past season -- but it sounds like the Cowboys would rather draft a new quarterback to develop behind starter Dak Prescott. Both Lance and second-stringer Cooper Rush are scheduled for free agency this spring, with Jones already suggesting that Rush's solid work as a backup may have priced him out of the Cowboys' range.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: In line for work in Week 18

Lance is expected to see "significant" snaps during Sunday's season finale against the Commanders, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Even with No. 1 QB Dak Prescott sidelined since he suffered a season-ending hamstring injury Week 9, Cooper Rush has handled just about all the reps under center in the meantime, while Lance has completed five of seven passes for 22 yards, no touchdowns and an interception and recorded five carries for 15 yards in three mostly brief appearances. Rapoport also noted that Rush still may start Week 18, but Lance should receive plenty of run to see how he handles extended game action. The breakdown of reps between Rush and Lance hasn't been made clear, though, so it remains to be seen what kind of workload either player will have Sunday.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Week 11 Waiver Priority List

Cooper Rush (16 percent rostered) is expected to start in Week 11 against Houston for the injured Dak Prescott (hamstring), but we hope the Cowboys give Lance a chance for extended playing time if Prescott could be out for the rest of the season. Rush is a career backup, but maybe Lance could resurrect his career if Dallas gives him a chance to play and prove himself. In Superflex and two-quarterback leagues, Lance is worth a flier for up to 5 percent of your remaining FAB.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Sees action in blowout loss

Lance completed four of six passes for 21 yards with an interception and added 17 rushing yards on three carries in Sunday's 34-6 loss to the Eagles. Cooper Rush got the start at quarterback for the Cowboys with Dak Prescott (hamstring) out, but the veteran backup had trouble moving the ball and lost two fumbles. Lance took over the offense after Rush's second turnover, but he had his own issues, getting picked off in the fourth quarter on a deep ball intended for Jalen Tolbert that the wideout never even turned around to track. The score was 28-6 when Lance was brought in, so it's not clear if the switch was due to the blowout nature of the game, or if it was a signal that he'll get a real chance to claim the top job in Prescott's absence.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Inactive versus Atlanta

Lance (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Falcons. Lance will once again serve as the Cowboys' emergency third quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Operating as emergency QB

Lance (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday night's game against the 49ers. Lance will once again be inactive and operate as the team's emergency quarterback in Week 8. He will be eligible to enter the game if both Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush get injured versus San Francisco.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Emergency QB for Week 6

Lance (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Lions but will be available as the emergency third quarterback. Lance is technically inactive and won't count against the 53-man roster limit. However, he'll be eligible to enter the game if Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush are both injured during Sunday's game.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Emergency QB for Week 5

Lance (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Steelers but will be available as the emergency third quarterback. As has been the case all season, Lance will only see the field if Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush are both forced to leave Sunday's game.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Remains emergency QB in Week 3

Lance (coach's decision) is inactive but available as the emergency third quarterback for Sunday's Week 3 matchup against the Ravens. It's more of the same for Lance, who's slotted into the emergency quarterback role as a healthy scratch in each of the first three games of the season. As customary, Lance will only be able to enter Sunday's game against Baltimore if both Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush suffer injuries that force their exit from the contest.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Could play entire game Saturday

Lance might play the entirety of Saturday's preseason finale against the Chargers, Nick Harris of DallasCowboys.com report s. Owner/GM Jerry Jones has stated outright that Lance is locked into a spot on the 53-man roster, but the coaching staff is still trying to figure out what to do with him. The 24-year-old quarterback has had a solid preseason statistically, completing 40 of 64 passes for 339 yards and a touchdown while adding 78 rushing yards and another TD on 13 carries, but his decision-making and ability to read defenses remains erratic. Dak Prescott is the unquestioned starter for Dallas, but Lance could still be in consideration for the No. 2 spot over Cooper Rush depending on his performance Saturday.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Guaranteed roster spot

Cowboys owner Jerry jones said Tuesday that Lance will have a spot on the 53-man roster, Saad Yousuf of The Athletic reports. Jones' comments aren't a big surprise with NFL teams now allowed to more easily carry three quarterbacks, but Lance is still in the running to take the No. 2 job from Cooper Rush and emerge as Dak Prescott's primary backup this season. Lance's mobility and athleticism have been on display this preseason, but he's only attempted 102 passes since being selected third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the 49ers. Lance's ability to read defenses and manage game situations remains a work in progress.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Mixed bag in preseason debut

Lance completed 25 of 41 passes for 188 yards in Sunday's 13-12 preseason loss to the Rams. He added 44 rushing yards on six carries. Cooper Rush got the start for Dallas in the team's preseason opener but saw only one series before handing the reins to Lance, who played the rest of the game. The 24-year-old quarterback flashed the physical ability that made him the third overall pick in the 2021 Draft, escaping pressure with his legs and showing off his arm strength, and his numbers were impacted by some drops by the second-team receiving options he was working with. Lance also had some accuracy issues of his own, though, and he failed to get the ball into the end zone despite multiple trips inside the 20, forcing the Cowboys to settle for four Brandon Aubrey field goals. This performance likely wasn't enough to push the former 49er ahead of Rush in the battle to be the primary backup to Dak Prescott, but Lance should get another chance in Saturday's preseason clash with the Raiders.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Fifth-year option gets declined

The Cowboys declined Lance's fifth-year option for the 2025 season Wednesday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports. Dallas' decision comes as little surprise, as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft appeared in just eight games over his first two seasons in the league with the 49ers and then didn't play a single snap for Dallas in 2023 after being acquired prior to Week 1. Lance remains on Dallas' roster for the upcoming season and will compete with Cooper Rush for backup duties behind starting quarterback Dak Prescott.

  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Sticking with Cowboys in 2024

The Cowboys will pick up Lance's $4.25 million roster bonus for the 2024 season, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports. Lance didn't play a snap for the Cowboys in 2023 after he was traded by the 49ers late in training camp. However, Dallas is optimistic about the growth he made and reportedly has not considered cutting him. Unsurprisingly, the team will not pick up Lance's fifth-year option, which would have been worth $22.4 million. In the best-case scenario, he'll be the Cowboys' backup quarterback entering 2024.
... See More ... See Less
  • Cowboys' Trey Lance: Doesn't play a snap in 2023

Lance didn't see the field for a single snap in 2023 while serving as the Cowboys' No. 3 quarterback. Acquired from the 49ers in August, Lance spent the entire season as the emergency third QB as Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush both stayed healthy for the entire year. Lance still possesses the upside that made him the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but he attempted only 102 passes in two seasons with San Francisco due to injuries, and there's no way to know how much the lack of action has caused his development to stagnate. The 23-year-old will likely head into 2024 competing for the No. 2 role with Rush.
