  • Colts' Cameron McGrone: Reserve role in season opener

McGrone had one total tackle in Sunday's win over Miami. McGrone played on 21 of the defense's 47 snaps. Despite being listed as the starter at weak-side linebacker on the preseason unofficial depth chart, he doesn't have a starting role on defense. The Colts start just two linebackers on defense in their base formation, leaving McGrone on the sidelines in most packages. However, he played one less snap than Joe Bachie, who started opposite Zaire Franklin (38 snaps).

  • Colts' Cameron McGrone: Listed as starting linebacker

McGrone is listed as the starter at weak-side linebacker on the Colts' first unofficial depth chart of the preseason. McGrone is battling Jaylon Carlies for the starting linebacker job opposite Zaire Franklin and has had an edge early in training camp. Joe Bachie could also figure into the mix opposite Franklin as well.

  • Colts' Cameron McGrone: Updates injury

McGrone suffered a dislocated elbow during training camp, which led to his placement on injured reserve, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. McGrone's injury was previously unknown, but he clarified the issue with Boyd on Thursday. The Michigan product underwent surgery to help repair the injury and plans to return this season. Exactly how much longer he'll be out remains unclear, but his placement on IR before Week 1 means he'll be out at least three more weeks.

  • Colts' Cameron McGrone: Past illness

McGrone (illness) was estimated as a full participant on Tuesday's practice report. The 23-year-old linebacker out of Michigan was held out of the Colts' Week 17 win over the Raiders due to an illness, but it now seems as if he's been able to move past that issue. McGrone has recorded three total tackles in 11 appearances this season, playing almost strictly on special teams (seven of 142 total snaps on defense).

  • Colts' Cameron McGrone: Not well enough to play

McGrone (illness) is inactive Sunday against the Raiders, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. McGrone was considered doubtful coming into the day, so his inclusion on the inactive list does not come as a surprise. Considering his work comes almost exclusively on special teams, his absence shouldn't impact the Colts' defense.

  • Colts' Cameron McGrone: Fresh start in Indy

The Colts signed McGrone off the Patriots' practice squad Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. McGrone had been on New England's practice squad throughout the duration of the season without any game action to show for it, but he'll now have an opportunity to make his NFL debut playing for Indianapolis following Tuesday's transaction. With the Colts' upcoming contest landing on a Monday, the 236-pound linebacker will have an extra day to adapt to the new playbook and possibly receive limited rotational snaps.

  • Patriots' Cameron McGrone: Clears COVID protocols

McGrone (knee) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, but he remains on the non-football injury list, Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports. McGrone is out for the season due to the knee injury he suffered while at Michigan during the 2020 season. Selected in the fifth round of the 2021 Draft, McGrone will return his focus to making an impact in 2022.

  • Patriots' Cameron McGrone: Designated for return

McGrone (knee) was designated to return from the non-football injury list Tuesday, Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports. McGrone was selected in the fifth-round of the 2021 Draft and had tore his ACL while at Michigan in November of 2020. At the time it was thought he might miss the entire 2021 campaign, so any return this season would be seen as significant progress. Although his designation to return does not guarantee he plays this season, it has opened a 21-day window for him to practice with the team and try to get activated.
