Dotson didn't make much of an impact until the playoffs for the Eagles and the offensive scheme calls for heavier personnel often. In a run-heavy offense, Dotson is no better than fourth in the target totem pole and not worth drafting in Fantasy leagues.
Dotson caught both of his targets for 27 yards in Thursday's preseason game against Cincinnati.
Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice.com notes that Dotson and RG Tyler Steen were the only projected starters on offense to play for Philadelphia. It's not where Dotson imagined he'd be when Washington took him 16th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he at least did his part to help Philly's second-string offense score a TD against Cincinnati's first-string defenders. The No. 3 WR role in Philadelphia isn't one where snaps are likely to translate to many targets, unless maybe the Eagles are missing a couple of their skill-position standouts (A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Saquon Barkley, Dallas Goedert). The good news for Dotson is that he looks like the leader for the No. 3 job again, ahead of Johnny Wilson, Terrace Marshall (knee), Ainias Smith and others.

Quinn said the Commanders are "in the middle of" a search for their No. 2 receiver, with John Keim of ESPN.com noting that Olamide Zaccheaus has been more consistent than Dotson in training camp. This may seem surprising given that Dotson was a first-round pick in 2022 and had a promising rookie season, but he was one of the least efficient starting WRs in the league last year in terms of both per-target and per-route production. He then played most of the first half in Washington's preseason opener against the Jets on Saturday, whereas sure-thing starters like QB Jayden Daniels and WR Terry McLaurin mostly were removed after the first drive. Dotson did get a lot of slot work against the Jets, suggesting he could settle in as the No. 3 receiver (and quite possibly draw more targets than Zaccheaus or whoever else is considered the No. 2).

Commanders' Jahan Dotson: Optimistic about Kingsbury's offense

Dotson recently told reporters it's been "really nice" having a simplified approach under new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Dotson wasn't a good fit under former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, whose scheme emphasized screen passes and other quick throws that relied on yards after the catch. That's not Dotson's strength, nor did it help that Sam Howell was one of the least accurate QBs on deep passes. Kingsbury and No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels may prove to be better fits for Dotson, but it would still be unwise to completely ignore his 2023 struggles. Out of 81 qualified wide receivers, he was 73rd in yards per target (6.2), 77th in yards per route (0.79), 78th in YAC average (2.1) and 78th in target rate (12.7 percent). Dotson had five more yards and three more TDs in five fewer games back in 2022, when he was the 16th overall draft pick and a Week 1 starter. The upcoming season will be his fifth in a row with a new coordinator/playcaller, dating back to his junior year at Penn State.
Dotson finished 2023 with 49 catches for 518 yards and four touchdowns on 83 targets.
Dotson had more yards (523) and touchdowns (seven) as a rookie in 2022 despite missing five full games and having his snaps limited in two others. He didn't miss any games in his sophomore campaign, but nearly everything else was a disappointment, including his target volume (4.9 per game) and efficiency stats (59.0 percent catch rate, 10.6 yards per catch, 6.2 yards per targe). His catch rate barely rose compared to 2022 -- even though his aDOT sunk from 13.5 to 9.3 -- and his yards after catch (YAC) average dropped from 3.9 to 2.4 (usually it rises when a player sees more short passes and fewer long ones). The main positives here are that Dotson never got benched, playing 82.2 percent of Washington's snaps on offense, and may now head into his third NFL season with a new head coach and new starting quarterback. The 2022 first-round pick nonetheless figures to come off the board much later in 2024 fantasy drafts than he did this past summer, with the down season in Year 2 casting serious doubt upon his future.

While Curtis Samuel (12) and Terry McLaurin (11) saw higher target volumes, Dotson was efficient with his looks as he topped 50 receiving yards for only the third time this season. The second-year wideout has been coming on after an awful start to the year, in large part because Sam Howell is consistently attempting more than 40 passes a game, and over the last five weeks Dotson has a 20-252-3 line on 29 targets, although even that productive stretch includes one game in which he didn't catch a pass at all. Dotson may need to come up big in Week 13 if the Commanders are to have a hope of keeping up with the Dolphins.
