  • Jets' Cade Klubnik: Confirmed as QB2

Coach Aaron Glenn confirmed Monday that Klubnik will open the season as the Jets' backup quarterback behind Geno Smith, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.

The Jets cut both Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe over the weekend, leaving the rookie Klubnik as the lone quarterback on the roster behind Smith. Glenn said Monday any additions to the quarterback room would come in the form of a practice-squad signing. Selected in the fourth round of the 2026 Draft, Klubnik completed 21 of 34 preseason pass attempts for 197 scoreless yards and one interception.

  • Jets' Cade Klubnik: Struggles in preseason finale

Klubnik completed six of 13 passes for 59 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Friday's 23-6 preseason loss to the Giants. He also rushed once for no gain.

Klubnik played the entire first half of Friday's preseason finale. The rookie fourth-round pick out of Clemson wasn't particularly sharp, but his teammates didn't help him much, either, as Klubnik had a 25-yard pass in the two-minute drill wiped out by an ineligible lineman downfield, and an offensive pass interference penalty two plays later knocked the Jets out of field-goal range. Despite Friday's forgettable performance, Klubnik's entire body of work in training camp and the preseason has likely earned him the backup job behind Geno Smith over Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe. Cook and Zappe combined for 38 passing yards in the second half Friday.

  • Jets' Cade Klubnik: Follows Smith in Friday's preseason win

Klubnik completed 10 of 14 passes for 75 yards and recorded a 16-yard carry during the Jets' 17-0 preseason win over the Steelers on Friday.

Geno Smith commanded the Jets on the first offensive series and led a 10-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jelani Woods. Klubnik took over on the second series and ended up playing more snaps than he did in the Jets' preseason opener against the Buccaneers. However, he could not lead the offense on any scoring drives, and part of the issue for the rookie fourth-rounder was that he was playing with the second-team offensive line. Klubnik appears to be ahead of both Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe for the backup QB job behind Geno Smith heading into the Jets' preseason finale against the Giants next Friday.

  • Jets' Cade Klubnik: Encouraging showing in preseason start

Klubnik got the start in Friday's 24-16 preseason loss to the Buccaneers and completed five of seven passes for 56 yards.

Klubnik got the starting nod due to Geno Smith (ankle) being ruled out. Smith's injury isn't believed to be serious, so the veteran QB remains the clear favorite to start for the Jets come Week 1 against the Titans, but Klubnik is making a strong case for the backup role. The Jets scored 10 points on Klubnik's two drives in the game, while neither Bailey Zappe nor Brady Cook led a touchdown drive, and Zappe was picked off twice. Klubnik is likely to feature prominently in the Jets' second preseason game against the Steelers next Friday.

  • Jets' Cade Klubnik: No. 2 on unofficial depth chart

Klubnik was named the No. 2 quarterback on the Jets' first unofficial depth chart of training camp, Eric Allen of the team's official site reports.

The fourth-round rookie out of Clemson seems to have the lead in the No. 2 quarterback competition with Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook. Klubnik completed 65.6 percent of his pass attempts for 2,943 yards and a 16:6 TD:INT as a senior for Clemson. As of now, it looks like Klubnik has a good chance of seeing the most snaps among the team's quarterbacks in Friday's preseason opener against the Buccaneers.

  • Jets' Cade Klubnik: Back on practice field

Klubnik (back) is participating in Wednesday's training camp practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Klubnik missed time during spring workouts due to back tightness, but he's now been cleared to resume practicing. The rookie fourth-round pick is competing with Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe to earn the No. 2 quarterback gig behind veteran starter Geno Smith.

  • Jets' Cade Klubnik: Impressing coaches

Jets coaches have been impressed by the skill set and approach of Klubnik (back) as the rookie enters training camp competing for the No. 2 QB job, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.

Klubnik remains a young developmental option behind veteran starter Geno Smith, but it's encouraging to see that he's already drawn praise from quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, offensive coordinator Frank Reich and head coach Aaron Glenn. The Jets coaching staff appears to have confidence in Klubnik's mechanics, and the preseason will be a valuable chance for the rookie fourth-round pick to gather experience. He dealt with back tightness during the final two weeks of spring practices, so he could be eased back into action to kick off training camp.

  • Jets' Cade Klubnik: Nursing back tightness

Klubnik is dealing with back tightness and won't practice Wednesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

It appears as if Klubnik avoided a serious back injury, as head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters Wednesday that he expects the rookie quarterback to return for the Jets' minicamp next week. During his final collegiate season at Clemson, Klubnik threw for 2,943 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions while adding 94 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. He's expected to compete for New York's No. 2 QB spot as the offseason progresses.
