  • Ravens' Alohi Gilman: Acquired by Baltimore

The Ravens acquired Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick from the Chargers in exchange for Odafe Oweh and a 2027 seventh-round pick Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The 1-4 Ravens have been churning the roster on defense a bit Tuesday, first signing veteran C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the practice squad before acquiring Gilman from Los Angeles. Gilman was a sixth-round pick by the Chargers in 2020 and has appeared in 73 career regular-season games, making 39 starts. He's started 30 games over the last three seasons, including the first five of 2025 for Los Angeles. On 87 percent of the defensive snaps this season, Gilman has recorded 22 tackles (11 solo) and three pass breakups. With Kyle Hamilton nursing a groin injury, Gilman could start immediately alongside first-round rookie safety Malaki Starks.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Looks ready to take step forward

Gilman recorded nine tackles (four solo) in Friday's 27-21 win over the Chiefs. Gilman led all Chargers defenders in total snaps, including 61 defensive snaps with seven additional on special teams. He also led the team in stops while serving as the primary free safety. Gilman has a career high of 73 tackles, so he could be in line for increased production in 2025.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Registers 50 tackles in 2024

Gilman played 11 regular-season games in 2024 and finished with 50 tackles (34 solo), including 1.0 sacks, and four pass defenses (including one interception). Gilman missed five of six regular-season games due to a hamstring injury, which was severe enough for him to be placed on injured reserve in late November. He was activated off IR ahead of the Chargers' regular-season finale against the Raiders, and he played every single defensive snap in the Bolts' wild-card loss against the Texans, finishing with 10 tackles (four solo), one pass defense and one forced fumble. Gilman and Derwin James will likely serve as the Chargers' starting safeties for the 2025 campaign.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Questionable for Week 18

Gilman (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Raiders, Eric Smith of the Chargers' official site reports. Gilman missed the Chargers' last five games due to a knee injury that was severe enough for him to be placed on injured reserve in late November. He returned to practice Wednesday and logged an LP/LP/FP practice log throughout the week. Gilman would need to be activated from IR in order to play in Sunday's regular-season finale.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Lands on IR due to hamstring injury

The Chargers placed Gilman (hamstring) on injured reserve Saturday. Gilman injured his hamstring during the Chargers' Week 13 loss to the Ravens, and the injury is severe enough to warrant a multi-week absence. The 2020 sixth-round pick will be required to miss at least the next four games, making Week 17 against the Patriots on Sunday, Dec. 29 the earliest he can return. Elijah Molden is the top candidate to start at free safety alongside strong safety Derwin James in Gilman's absence.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Ruled out for Week 13

Gilman (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's clash against Atlanta. Gilman didn't practice at all this week due to a hamstring injury, and as a consequence he'll miss his first game since Week 2. His absence further thins a Chargers secondary that also will be without cornerbacks Cam Hart (concussion/ankle), Eli Apple (hamstring) and Asante Samuel (shoulder). Marcus Maye -- who the Chargers picked up off waivers Wednesday -- could immediately log significant defensive snaps in Gilman's absence Sunday.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Nabs pick vs. Browns

Gilman recorded five total tackles (four solo) and one interception in Sunday's 27-10 win over the Browns. Gilman was one of three Chargers to snag an interception in Sunday's win, picking off Jameis Winston in the third quarter. The 27-year-old has impressed through his first seven appearances this season, recording 38 total tackles and three passes defended, including Sunday's interception. He's expected to continue causing problems for opposing quarterbacks as the season progresses.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: First career sack

Gilman recorded 10 tackles (six solo), a sack and a pass breakup in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Broncos. Gilman notched his first career sack and the first 10-tackle game since Week 1 of last season. Prior to this outing, Gilman had posted just 13 tackles through three games, so his IDP upside remains limited considering sacks and interceptions weren't a large part of his game through the first four years of his career.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Suiting up for Week 3

Gilman (knee) is active for Sunday's game against Pittsburgh. Gilman missed the Chargers' Week 2 contest against the Panthers due to a knee injury. He's good to go for Sunday's game, however, after logging a full practice session Friday. Gilman played 98 percent of the Chargers' defensive snaps in Week 1 against the Raiders, during which he accrued four tackles (three solo). He'll resume his starting job at free safety, with Elijah Molden reverting to a rotational role for Sunday's game.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Questionable for Week 3

Gilman (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Steelers, Eric Smith of the Chargers' official site reports. Gilman closed Week 3 prep Friday as a full practice participant, so the expectation is that he'll play Sunday. The safety sat out last week's win over the Panthers with the knee injury but was active for the Chargers' win over the Raiders in Week 1, tallying four tackles while playing 98 percent of the snaps on defense.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Doubtful for Sunday

Gilman (knee) is doubtful for Sunday's matchup against Carolina. Gilman popped up on the injury report earlier this week after playing 58 of the Chargers' 60 snaps and logging four tackles (three solo) in the team's 22-10 win against the Raiders. It now looks like the safety may not see the field at all in the team's Week 2 matchup, but Sunday morning will be the true teller.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Pops up on injury report

Gilman (knee) did not participate in Wednesday's practice session. Gilman played 58 of the Chargers' 60 snaps during Sunday's 22-10 win over the Raiders, finishing with four tackles (three solo). He appears to have tweaked his knee during the contest, and the 2020 sixth-round pick's practice participation Thursday and Friday will offer insight into his availability for Week 2 against the Panthers.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Strikes new deal with LAC

Gilman and the Chargers agreed on a two-year, $11 million contract Monday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Gilman stepped into a starting role in the Chargers' secondary in 2023, recording a career-high 73 tackles, 10 pass defenses two interceptions while also forcing three fumbles and recovering two fumbles over 14 games. He has now been rewarded with a new deal, and Gilman will operate opposite Derwin James again in 2024.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Limited in practice

Gilman (heel) was a limited participant in the Chargers' practice Wednesday. Gilman has missed the team's past three games due to a heel injury but managed to return to practice Wednesday, albeit in a limited capacity. The 26-year-old will look to be good to go for Sunday's game against the Bears, but if he's unable to suit up once again, Jaylinn Hawkins will start at safety.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: No go for MNF

Gilman (heel) is inactive for Monday's matchup with the Cowboys. Gilman was considered doubtful to return to the field in Week 6 after he missed the team's Week 4 win over the Raiders before the bye with a heel injury, and he's now officially inactive. Raheem Layne will draw another start at free safety and will look to limit the production of CeeDee Lamb and the rest of Dallas' pass catchers.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Won't play Sunday

Gilman (heel) is inactive for Sunday's matchup against the Raiders. Gilman logged a limited session Friday after not practicing Wednesday or Thursday, but he'll still miss his first game of the season. Derwin James (hamstring) and JT Woods (undisclosed) are also out, so Raheem Layne, Dean Marlowe and AJ Finley are candidates for increased roles in the secondary.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Leads team in tackles

Gilman tallied 11 tackles (nine solo) in the 36-34 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. The safety played all 67 defensive snaps and was routinely asked to make tackles deep in the Los Angeles secondary as the Dolphins constantly moved the ball through the air. Safeties Gilman, Pro Bowler Derwin James and rookie third-round pick JT Woods all finished among the top five in tackles following Sunday's contest, highlighting a unit that has often been used very fluidly under head coach Brandon Staley.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Dodges Week 1 injury report

Gilman (knee) was not included on the Chargers' injury report Wednesday. Gilman missed practice in mid-August while nursing a knee contusion. However, the 5-foot-10 free safety should now be a full-go to begin his age-26 season. Gilman accrued a career-high 58 tackles, three passes defended and one interception while playing all 17 games for the Chargers last season, and he's slated to start alongside star safety Derwin James in 2023.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: Nursing knee bruise

Gilman has been sidelined at practice this week due to a knee contusion, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports. Gilman is slated to start at free safety for the Chargers this season. He played in all 17 games during the 2022 campaign and started five of them. Expect Los Angeles to err on the side of caution with the 25-year-old in order to ensure his health for Week 1. Thus, his status for Sunday's exhibition matchup with the Saints is certainly in question.

  • Chargers' Alohi Gilman: May not play Friday

Gilman is very questionable for Friday's preseason game against the Saints according to head coach Brandon Staley, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports. Gilman isn't known to be dealing with injuries, so the reason for his uncertainty for the game is unclear. However, heading into his third season, Gilman's spot on the roster should be safe as a strong contributor on special teams and depth piece in the secondary.
