Initial X-rays revealed that Onwenu fractured his right ankle during Sunday's 20-3 win over the Steelers, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
The Patriots will likely confirm the injury in the coming days, but Onwenu will almost assuredly miss time and could be headed to injured reserve. Greg Van Roten is the most likely candidate to start at right guard Week 3 against the Jaguars after he came on to replace Onwenu following his departure Sunday.

Onwenu is heading into the final season of a three-year, $57 million deal. The revised contract nets a $7.5 million cap reduction for the Patriots while adding $10 million in guaranteed money for the veteran lineman.

Onwenu (hand) participated in Wednesday's practice, Paul Perillo of Patriots.com reports.
Onwenu was limited at OTAs in the spring due to his hand injury, but he now appears to be back at full strength. The 27-year-old has been an important component of the Patriots' offensive line, starting all 17 games last season. Onwenu is projected to slot in at right guard alongside recent addition Morgan Moses in 2025.

Onwenu has been limited at OTAs this spring due to a hand injury, NFL.com reports.
It doesn't sound serious. Onwenu opened the 2024 season at right tackle but was kicked back inside to right guard in Week 5. After New England signed veteran RT Morgan Moses in free agency and then drafted LT Will Campbell with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Onwenu figures to stick at guard this coming season.
