Should the Saints Start Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler?

Player Outlook
Shaheed should once again be the No. 2 receiver for the Saints, and he's worth drafting with a late-round pick in all leagues. He could emerge as a No. 3 Fantasy receiver this year. Shaheed should be healthy coming off last year's knee injury, and he should start opposite Chris Olave, although keep an eye on the role for Brandin Cooks. The problem for Shaheed could be bad quarterback play with Derek Carr retired, and the Saints could go with rookie Tyler Shough or second-year Spencer Rattler as the starter, which isn't ideal. Last year, Shaheed got off to a hot start with at least 15.7 PPR points in four of his first six games, but then he injured his knee and was out from Week 7 through the end of the year. Keep an eye on his health in training camp, and Shaheed has plenty of sleeper appeal if the quarterback play for the Saints isn't awful. Shaheed is a great receiver to stash on the end of your bench.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Two grabs in preseason finale

Shaheed brought in two of three targets of 14 yards in the Saints' 28-19 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday afternoon. Shaheed took the field for the Saints' first three possessions with Spencer Rattler as his quarterback and recorded multiple grabs for the second straight preseason contest. The speedy Weber State product should once again serve as one of the Saints' most potent downfield weapons in 2025, although working with either Rattler and the even more inexperienced Tyler Shough could certainly cap Shaheed's upside somewhat.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Three catches in preseason tie

Shaheed caught all three of his targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 17-17 preseason tie against the Jaguars. Shaheed suited up for his first game action since Week 6 of last season, when he tore the meniscus in his knee. He got the start at wide receiver opposite Chris Olave, and they combined for five first-half catches on passes from rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough. The Saints have yet to settle on a starting quarterback between Shough and Spencer Rattler heading into their third and final game of the preseason Saturday against the Broncos.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Poised to play Sunday

Shaheed is participating in pregame warmups and is in line to play in Sunday's preseason game against the Jaguars, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. Shaheed did not play in the Saints' preseason opener against the Chargers despite participating in warmups, but he's taking part in the team part of pregame routines Sunday along with Chris Olave (ankle). If Shaheed does play, he'll likely be limited to one or two offensive series to build chemistry and in-game reps with rookie QB Tyler Shough.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Sits out preseason opener

Shaheed did not play in Sunday's 27-13 preseason loss to the Chargers. Shaheed was in uniform and warming up with the Saints' starters pregame, but he ultimately stayed on the sideline during Sunday's loss. He and Chris Olave (ankle) are the two wideouts who are guaranteed to have a starting spot for the Saints when healthy this season, so it's unlikely that either player will need to play much this preseason. The next opportunity for Shaheed and Olave to suit up this preseason will come versus Jacksonville on Sunday, Aug. 17.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Might play after all

Shaheed is in uniform and participating in pregame warmups ahead of Sunday's preseason contest against the Chargers, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports. It looked like Shaheed would join Chris Olave (ankle) in street clothes for Sunday's preseason opener, but the former has suited up and working with the wide receiver and punt return groups. It remains to be seen whether Shaheed indeed plays, but if he does, he'll likely be limited to one or two series on offense. With Olave out, Shaheed is slated to serve as the Saints' WR1 and Spencer Rattler's top target.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Not in line to play Sunday

Shaheed is not participating in pregame warmups and is not expected to play against the Chargers on Sunday, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. The Saints will be without their top wideouts in Shaheed and Chris Olave (ankle), which leaves Brandin Cooks, Bub Means, Cedrick Wilson and Mason Tipton as the top wide receivers for QB Spencer Rattler, who will start in Sunday's preseason opener. Shaheed doesn't appear to be nursing an injury, and his next chance to play will be next Sunday against the Jaguars.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Adds weight over offseason

Shaheed reported to training camp this week at 190 pounds, Erin Summers of the Saints' official website reports. Shaheed was listed at 180 pounds last season but said Thursday that he put on weight in order to hold up better against contact. Shaheed insists he didn't lose any of his speed despite the additional 10 pounds. New Orleans' quarterback situation is a tough one, but Shaheed is locked into two-WR sets alongside Chris Olave and has the ability to take any catch to the end zone. He's an exciting target in best ball fantasy drafts and was fantasy's WR27 in half-PPR points per game before going down with a knee injury in Week 6 last season.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Out for season

Shaheed underwent a full repair of his meniscus Thursday and will miss the rest of the season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The Saints placed Shaheed on injured reserve Thursday afternoon, ruling him out for at least four games. But not long after, Schefter reported that Shaheed's recovery timeline will be 4-to-6 months. Shaheed thus will turn his focus to getting healthy for the 2025 campaign. With Chris Olave (concussion) out Thursday against the Broncos, New Orleans' receiving corps will be composed of Mason Tipton, Bub Means, Cedrick Wilson, Equanimeous St. Brown and Jermaine Jackson.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Goes on injured reserve

The Saints placed Shaheed (knee) on injured reserve Thursday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports. Shaheed thus will miss at least the next four games, but the meniscus surgery that he's undergoing Thursday in Los Angeles ultimately will determine if he has a chance to return to the Saints' active roster this season. If he ends up having a full repair, he'll be out for the rest of the campaign.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Meniscus surgery on tap

Saints head coach Dennis Allen said Wednesday that Shaheed (knee) is slated to undergo surgery to address a meniscus injury and may be placed on injured reserve, Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. Shaheed thus will join Chris Olave (concussion) as out for Week 7 action, and Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the former's procedure will determine if he misses multiple weeks or even the rest of the campaign. With their top two wide receivers sidelined for at least Thursday's contest, the Saints will turn to Mason Tipton, Cedrick Wilson (ankle) and Bub Means at the position, while Equanimeous St. Brown, Kevin Austin, Dante Pettis and Jermaine Jackson are candidates to be elevated from the practice squad.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Getting knee checked out

Shaheed, who was listed as a non-participant on Monday's estimated practice report, is getting his knee checked out to determine the severity of the injury he sustained in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Buccaneers, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports. Per Underhill, there's some concern Shaheed could miss time, but more will be known in that regard after the wideout's knee gets evaluated further. With Chris Olave dealing with a concussion, the status of the Saints' top WRs is a concern for the team ahead of Thursday night's game against the Broncos. If neither of them are able to face Denver, added opportunities would be available for Mason Tipton, Cedrick Wilson (ankle) and Bub Means (hand).

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: DNP on Monday's estimate

Shaheed (knee) was a non-participant on Monday's estimated injury report. Neither Shaheed nor Chris Olave (concussion) would have practiced had the Saints held drills Monday, which is a significant development with Thursday's game against the Saints right around the corner. Shaheed added to his outstanding start to the season with a punt return touchdown in Sunday's 51-27 loss to the Buccaneers, but he caught only one of seven targets from rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler, who is in line for another start in place of Derek Carr (oblique). Bub Means (hand) was a full participant on Monday's estimate, while Cedrick Wilson (ankle) was limited.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Spotted Thursday

Shaheed (hip) was seen during the team stretch prior to Thursday's practice, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports. Having said that, Shaheed then left the field, indicating he's poised for a second straight absence to kick off Week 6 prep. His activity level, or lack thereof, will be known once the Saints post their next practice report later Thursday.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: WRs to Start

It's time to start Shaheed as a No. 2 Fantasy receiver in all leagues. He's been impressive in two games against Carolina and Dallas with seven catches for 169 yards and two touchdowns on nine targets, and he's averaging 18.6 PPR points per game. I'm hopeful that Chris Olave starts playing at a higher level as well, but clearly Klint Kubiak's offense has been great for New Orleans, especially Shaheed. This week, the Saints are facing an Eagles defense that has allowed two opposing receivers to score touchdowns in each of their first two games, so hopefully Shaheed and Olave can each find the end zone in this matchup.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Week 2 Waiver Priority List

Shaheed had three catches for 73 yards and a touchdown on five targets in Week 1 against Carolina, and he could have had more production in a competitive game. I'm excited about his role this season for the Saints under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. and this New Orleans offense could be one of the better surprises this year. Shaheed is worth adding for 10-15 percent of your remaining FAB.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Hauls in long TD in win

Shaheed caught three of five targets for 73 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 47-10 win over the Panthers. The third-year wideout was on the other end of a 59-yard TD pass from Derek Carr in the first quarter, accounting for most of his team high in receiving yards. Shaheed was expected to assume a bigger role in the Saints' offense this year under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, and the early returns were excellent. Shaheed will take on a much stingier secondary in Week 2 against the Cowboys.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Spotted at practice

Shaheed (toe) was present for practice Wednesday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports. While the extent of his participation is unclear, Shaheed's presence in any capacity is a good sign for the Saints with 11 days to go before their season opener against Carolina. He's dealt with a toe/foot injury for the past couple weeks, after missing time with a hamstring injury early in training camp.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Should be fine for Week 1

The Saints expect Shaheed (toe) to be ready for Week 1 against Carolina, Brandon Thomas of New Orleans Football Network reports. Shaheed missed most of training camp and the preseason, first dealing with a hamstring injury and now a toe issue. He excelled as a return specialist and deep threat during his first two NFL seasons, but his role may be different under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, especially because the Saints lack wideout talent behind No. 1 receiver Chris Olave. Possibilities for 2024 include Shaheed getting more short/intermediate targets and/or fewer touches on special teams.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Remains out for preseason finale

Shaheed (toe/foot) did not play in Sunday's 30-27 preseason loss to the Titans. Shaheed's absence did not come as a surprise after he missed the team's previous exhibition with an unspecified toe/foot injury. Even if he were healthy, it's likely that the 6-foot speedster would not have played Sunday, as the vast majority of New Orleans' starters also sat out. Saints coach Dennis Allen said Wednesday that he doesn't expect Shaheed to be out long with this injury. The soon-to-be 26-year-old logged career highs with 46 catches for 719 yards and five scores across 15 regular-season games last year. He'll have two weeks to return in time for the regular-season opener against Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 8.

  • Saints' Rashid Shaheed: Sidelined at practice again

Shaheed (toe/foot) is not practicing Friday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports. Shaheed is dealing with a new toe/foot injury, per Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com. After missing the Saints' preseason opener last week due to a hamstring issue, Shaheed's status now looks uncertain for Sunday's exhibition contest against San Francisco. On a positive note for New Orleans, A.T. Perry (ankle) returned as a limited participant Friday.
