Broncos' Jonathon Cooper: Excused from minicamp
The Broncos excused Cooper from this week's mandatory minicamp, Jeff Legwold of ESPN reports.
"He's taking this time, obviously, he's got to work on himself,'' coach Sean Payton said Tuesday of Cooper, who was arrested twice during a seven-day span earlier this month on multiple domestic violence charges, including one felony. When asked if the Broncos planned to let the legal process conclude before a decision on Cooper's future with the team is made, Payton said: "There's a process period from the league and that involves the local law enforcement. We'll continue to gather that information.'' Regarding the linebacker's legal situation, a league spokesman said last week only that the NFL was monitoring the case.

Broncos' Jonathon Cooper: Facing additional serious charges
Cooper has had additional charges of felony second-degree assault by strangulation and misdemeanor third-degree assault added to his previous charge of criminal mischief with a domestic violence enhancer, Luca Evans of The Denver Post reports.
Cooper was arrested during the evening of June 4 and made a court appearance Monday, during which he pleaded not guilty to the original charge. A trial has been scheduled for late July. Cooper has been with the Broncos during OTAs since Monday, and head coach Sean Payton said team leadership had a "long visit" with the outside linebacker in regard to the incident that spurred the legal charges. Payton added, "We'll follow the league's guidelines, and I'm sure a lot of that will be led by the local authorities' guidelines. We'll pay attention to all of it."

Broncos' Jonathon Cooper: Finishes 2025 with 8.0 sacks
Cooper recorded 50 tackles (23 solo), including 8.0 sacks, and four passes defensed over 17 games in 2025.
Cooper continued to be a key contributor for Denver's top-tier pass rushing unit in 2025, recording the second-most sacks of any Broncos defender behind only Nik Bonitto (14.0). The 28-year-old linebacker signed a four-year extension in 2024, keeping Cooper and Bonitto under contract together for the foreseeable future. Cooper's continued development should help him to build upon his performance as one of the leaders of Denver's defense in 2026.
