  • Commanders' Austin Seibert: IR placement due to groin injury

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said Seibert was placed on injured reserve Tuesday due to a groin injury, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.

Seibert had missed two straight games with a right hip injury before he returned to action for this past Sunday's 34-26 loss to the Cowboys. After missing three of his five kicks (two extra-point tries, one field goal) on the day, Seibert's placement on IR two days later was believed to be the result of an aggravation of the hip injury, but Quinn clarified that the kicker informed the team Monday he was bothered by a groin issue. Seibert will miss at least four games after being placed on IR, and the Commanders are likely to elevate Zane Gonzalez from the practice squad to handle kicking duties beginning with Sunday's matchup with the Titans.

  • Commanders' Austin Seibert: Heads to IR

The Commanders placed Seibert on injured reserve Tuesday.

Seibert's placement on IR is presumably due to the right hip injury that prevented him from playing in Weeks 11 and 12. The 28-year-old was cleared to return to action in this past Sunday's game against the Cowboys, but he struggled mightily with two costly misses on point-after tries along with a missed 51-yard field goal, leaving five points on the table that might have kept Washington from needing to attempt an onside kick at the end of the game. The Commanders don't have another kicker on the roster at the moment, but Zane Gonzalez previously filled in during Seibert's two-game absence and will presumably be elevated from the practice squad once again to handle kicking duties this Sunday against the Titans. Seibert won't be eligible to return to action until Washington's Week 18 rematch with the Cowboys on Jan. 5.

  • Commanders' Austin Seibert: Misses prove costly vs. Cowboys

Seibert made two of his three field-goal tries and missed both of his two extra-point attempts during Sunday's 34-26 loss versus Dallas.

Seibert's day at the office in Week 12 was far from ideal overall, but his most impactful mistake was missing an extra-point try that would have tied the game at 27-27 with 21 seconds remaining to play. Instead Washington had to attempt an onside kick, and like salt on a wound, Seibert's kick on that play was returned for a touchdown. He'll be looking to bounce back in Week 13 versus the Titans.
