Anthony Richardson's Path Back To Starter Status

Player Outlook
Jones is expected to enter Colts camp in a quarterback competition with former top draft pick Anthony Richardson. While some have speculated that Richardson will get the first chance, training camp practices and consistency will ultimately be the deciding factor in who starts Week 1. Jones will likely play at some point in 2025, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's worth rostering in anything other than Superflex/two-QB formats. Jones averaged just 15.1 Fantasy points per game -- the 35th-most Fantasy points per game in 2024 despite the Giants providing him an elite WR1 in Malik Nabers and a much-improved offensive line for the first six weeks before injuries. In 2023, Jones averaged just 10.2 Fantasy points per game, 47th-most among all QBs.

  • Colts' Daniel Jones: Named as starter

Jones has been named the starting quarterback for Week 1 against Miami, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Colts coach Shane Steichen reportedly informed Jones and Anthony Richardson of his decision Tuesday morning. There wasn't a decisive winner in the QB competition over two preseason games, but Jones seemingly made a better impression on the practice field this spring and summer. His poor track record with the Giants suggests Richardson is likely to make starts at some point this season, however.

  • Colts' Daniel Jones: Sharp in preseason start

Jones completed seven of 11 passes for 101 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and netted no gain on one carry in the Colts' 23-19 preseason loss to the Packers on Saturday afternoon. He also fumbled once but recovered. Per Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan, Jones' afternoon didn't exactly get off to an encouraging start considering he missed an open Tyler Warren on a third-down pass that was overthrown. However, the veteran was much sharper on his second possession, helming an 11-play, 77-yard march on which he had a big 23-yard completion wiped out by an offensive holding penalty against Adonai Mitchell. Jones completed passes to four different targets, with the highlights being 22- and 25-yard connections to Michael Pittman and Warren, respectively. Anthony Richardson also put some good play on film following Jones' time in the contest, so it remains to be seen if next Saturday's preseason finale at Cincinnati will serve as the final proving ground for both players in their battle for the No. 1 quarterback job.

  • Colts' Daniel Jones: Will play in preseason opener

Colts coach Shane Steichen said Sunday that both Jones and Anthony Richardson will "play a good amount" in the preseason opener Thursday at Baltimore, JJ Stankevitz of the Colts' official site reports. Steichen didn't name a starter, but he did say that whichever quarterback gets less playing time in this game will then get more snaps in the second week of the preseason. Reports out of Colts training camp put Jones and Richardson neck-and-neck in their competition for the starting job, with both reportedly improving in recent practices after struggling through the first few days.

  • Colts' Daniel Jones: QB competition remains close

Jones and Anthony Richardson have remained neck and neck throughout the Colts training camp quarterback competition, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. The two signal-callers continue to share training camp reps, with coach Shane Steichen not yet inclined to reveal his plan for who will get the starting nod in the team's Aug. 7 preseason opener against the Ravens. Following Thursday's practice, Steichen noted that both players "have made plays at a high level the past couple of days, and that's what you want to see. You want to see growth; you want to see completions; you want to see the offense moving up and down the field. So, both have been doing a really good job."

  • Colts' Daniel Jones: Splits reps with Richardson

Jones and Anthony Richardson split first-team QB snaps during Wednesday's opening training camp practice, Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star reports. Per the report, the Colts held four team periods during Wednesday's session, with Jones working with the starters for the first two, while Richardson took the first-team snaps during the final two. In the process, each quarterback was given 16 team snaps, which aligns with coach Shane Steichen's plan to alternate the two signal-callers in training camp as they compete for the Week 1 starting assignment. While there's a chance that Richardson could have some volume restrictions in the coming days after experiencing soreness in his throwing shoulder this summer, the 2023 first-rounder was cleared to participate in training camp, setting the stage for a job battle that Steichen noted is "really going to come down to who's the most consistent" as the summer progresses, JJ Stankevitz of the Colts' official site previously reported.

  • Colts' Daniel Jones: Opportunity knocks

Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Thursday that Anthony Richardson (shoulder) is dealing with an injury and will not participate in mandatory minicamp June 10-12, leaving Jones in position to dominate first-team reps. Jones and Richardson have been positioned to split first-team reps in what looks like a truly open competition for the No. 1 quarterback gig, but the latter signal-caller is now sidelined due to an injury to his throwing shoulder and without a return timetable other than hopefully being back "at some point" in training camp, per James Boyd of The Athletic. That leaves Jones, who inked a one-year, $14 million deal with Indianapolis in March, staring down an opportunity to impress while handling the lion's share of first-team reps in mandatory minicamp, and potentially longer depending on Richardson's recovery. Boyd reports that Richardson's shoulder injury is related to the AC joint issue that ended his 2023 rookie campaign early. While Boyd notes that Richardson's current injury isn't expected to require surgery, this appears to be a situation that could fluctuate. For at least mandatory minicamp, Jones will work to take advantage of the opportunity before him and establish quick chemistry with top wideouts Michael Pittman and Josh Downs, as well as rookie 14th overall pick TE Tyler Warren.

  • Colts' Daniel Jones: One-year deal made official

Jones signed a one-year contract with the Colts on Wednesday, JJ Stankevitz of the team's official site reports. Per Stephen Holder of ESPN.com, Jones' contract is guaranteed for $13.15 million and will be worth up to $14 million if he's active for all 17 regular-season games. The deal also contains up to $3.7 million in additional performance-based incentives. The stage is thus set for Jones -- the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft -- to compete with Anthony Richardson for the Colts' starting quarterback job throughout training camp and the preseason.

  • Colts' Daniel Jones: In line to sign with Indy

Jones is slated to sign with the Colts as both sides work to finalize a one-year contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Jones' contract will be a one-year, $14 million deal once finalized, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The former Giants quarterback reportedly had an avenue to return to Minnesota, where he could have served as a veteran mentor to J.J. McCarthy (knee), but landing in Indianapolis will instead provide Jones with an opportunity to compete for the starting job against Anthony Richardson (back). General manager Chris Ballard had referred to an upcoming "open competition" between Richardson and a signal-caller to be determined, a role that will now be filled by Jones.

  • Vikings' Daniel Jones: Joins active roster

The Vikings signed Jones off their practice squad Tuesday. The quarterback didn't see any time on the 53-man roster for the Vikings after being signed to the practice squad in late November. Even so, his ample starting experience with the Giants could make him a candidate to leapfrog Nick Mullens if starter Sam Darnold were to get hurt during Minnesota's upcoming postseason run. Jones is still scheduled to hit free agency this offseason, though by adding him to their roster, the Vikings could net a compensatory draft pick if the signal-caller signs elsewhere.

  • Daniel Jones: Joining Minnesota's practice squad

Jones agreed Wednesday to sign with the Vikings' practice squad after clearing waivers Monday, Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network report. After drawing interest from plenty of suitors upon getting waived by the Giants last week, Jones was eager to join a playoff-contending club and appears to have found a good landing spot in Minnesota. Though Sam Darnold will remain the Vikings' starting quarterback, Jones is expected to be elevated from the practice squad and serve as Darnold's backup once he gets up to speed with head coach Kevin O'Connell's offensive system. By joining the practice squad rather than Minnesota's 53-man roster, Jones will have the option to sign with another organization if a better opportunity emerges elsewhere later in the season before re-entering free agency this spring. Jones had started in each of the Giants' first 10 games of the season and completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions while carrying 67 times for 265 yards and two scores in that span.

  • Daniel Jones: Won't join Las Vegas

Jones has eliminated the Raiders from consideration to be the next team he plays for, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports. Las Vegas seemed to present a logical landing spot for Jones, especially after Gardner Minshew suffered a season-ending broken collarbone Sunday against Denver. However, Jones reportedly is interested in linking up with a postseason contender, which the 2-9 Raiders certainly are not. Schultz reports that Jones has "substantial interest" from multiple playoff teams, but it's unclear if any of those would give the former Giant a chance to compete for a starting role.

  • Daniel Jones: Could sign next week

Jones has been contacted by 10 teams, including one team with whom he could become a starting candidate in Week 13, Jay Glazer reported on "Fox NFL Sunday." Jones reportedly would prefer to sign with a playoff contender, but it's interesting that there's at least one landing spot where he could step in as a starter. The quarterback was waived Friday and is expected to formally clear waivers Monday, at which point he would be able to sign with a team.

  • Daniel Jones: Gets cut by Giants

The Giants announced Friday that they're waiving Jones. The team's statement says Jones asked to be released and was granted his request. He'll now be subject to waivers, although his large contract presumably ensures nobody will put in a claim, which means he'll soon be a free agent and able to sign with any team. Offset language in the contract means Jones has no immediate incentive to sign for more than the veteran's minimum, much like Steelers QB Russell Wilson this past offseason. As such, Jones should find work soon enough if he so desires, be it as a backup for a contender or a potential late-season starter for a non-contender with QB woes. The Giants, meanwhile, are moving forward with Tommy DeVito as their starting quarterback and Drew Lock in the backup role.

  • Giants' Daniel Jones: Drops to third on depth chart

Head coach Brian Daboll confirmed Monday that Jones will serve as the Giants' No. 3 quarterback moving forward, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. In his press conference, Daboll didn't go into specifics about why he elected to drop Jones from first to third on the depth chart, but the decision is almost certainly related to the quarterback's contract, which would guarantee him $23 million for 2025 if he were to suffer an injury at any point over the remainder of the season. Though New York plans to make Jones a healthy inactive as the emergency third quarterback for its final seven games, he'll remain with the team and could still trigger the injury guarantee if he gets hurt in a team activity, per Patricia Traina of SI.com. Tommy DeVito will take over as the Giants' starting quarterback beginning with Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, while Drew Lock will remain in the top backup role as New York plays out the string on a non-contending campaign before presumably cutting bait with Jones this offseason.

  • Giants' Daniel Jones: Replaced as starter

The Giants are in line to turn from Jones to Tommy DeVito as their starting quarterback Sunday against the Buccaneers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Following the team's bye week, the 2-8 Giants plan to turn the offense over to DeVito, rather than previous No. 2 QB Drew Lock. Aside from the team's record and the poor level of Jones' play this season, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com notes that the Giants also had to factor in that there is a $23 million injury guarantee in Jones' contract for 2025 that kicks in if the QB gets injured and is unable to pass a physical in the offseason.

  • Giants' Daniel Jones: Sleeper QBs

Jones scored a season-high 28.4 Fantasy points in Week 9 against Washington, and I'm expecting him to stay hot against the Panthers in Germany. Carolina is No. 4 in most Fantasy points allowed to opposing quarterbacks, and two of the past three quarterbacks against the Panthers scored at least 28.8 Fantasy points. Jones has played four games outside of New Jersey this season, and he scored at least 22.3 Fantasy points in three of them. I hope the matchup, along with playing abroad, helps Jones have another big game in Week 10.

  • Giants' Daniel Jones: Week 10 Waiver Priority List

Jones just had his best game of the season in Week 9 against Washington with 28.4 Fantasy points, and it comes at the right time with a favorable matchup in Week 10 against Carolina in Germany. If the Giants win that game and Jones isn't benched going into the bye in Week 11, he then faces Tampa Bay in Week 12, Dallas in Week 13, New Orleans in Week 14, Baltimore in Week 15, Atlanta in Week 16, and Indianapolis in Week 17. I can't imagine many Fantasy managers trusting Jones in one-quarterback leagues, but all of those matchups are favorable as of now. He's worth adding for 1 percent of your remaining FAB.

  • Giants' Daniel Jones: Adds/Streamers (QB Preview)

I know picking on the Panthers didn't work last week, but once Chris Olave went down the Saints offense had to focus around Alvin Kamara. Even after holding Carr to 13 Fantasy points last week, the Panthers have still allowed the fourth-most Fantasy points to opposing QBs. Jones is coming off a 26-point performance and should continue his strong play against a bad defense.

  • Giants' Daniel Jones: Late turnovers seal loss

Jones completed 24 of 38 passes for 264 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and rushed three times for one yard in the Giants' 26-18 loss to the Steelers on Monday night. He also lost a fumble. Jones' final yardage total was more than adequate and was partly comprised of an impressive 43-yard strike to Darius Slayton in the first half. However, the embattled veteran signal-caller doomed the Giants' comeback attempts on two occasions during the latter portion of the fourth quarter, fumbling at the Steelers' 27-yard line on a sack by T.J. Watt and then overthrowing Devin Singletary at nearly the same spot on the field with 34 seconds remaining, resulting in a game-sealing interception for Pittsburgh. Jones now has gone three straight games without a touchdown pass while also throwing a pair of picks in that span, and a switch to Drew Lock could be afoot ahead of a Week 9 home matchup against the surging Commanders.

  • Giants' Daniel Jones: Gets replaced late in rout

Jones completed 14 of 21 passes for 99 yards and gained 20 rushing yards on five carries in Sunday's 28-3 loss to the Eagles. With the game out of reach, Jones got benched in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Drew Lock. The move doesn't seem to be an indication that head coach Brian Daboll is contemplating a more permanent switch however, as Daboll said after the game that he was just looking to "create a spark" with his team down 25 points while making it clear that Jones is still viewed as the team's starting quarterback, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com. Jones has now failed to produce a touchdown for the third time in the last four games, but he'll get a chance to rebound Week 8 against the Steelers.
