Buccaneers' Vita Vea: Dealing with tweaked back
Vea suffered a tweaked back in Tuesday's condition test at training camp, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Vea is "holding in" at training camp after he requested a trade out of Tampa Bay earlier in the week. He's looking for a new contract as he heads into the final year of a four-year, $71 million extension that was signed in 2022. Vea started all 17 regular-season games in 2025 and recorded 34 tackles (16 solo), including 4.5 sacks. He's certainly on the downslope of his career and is looking to cash in one more time.

Buccaneers' Vita Vea: Makes trade request
Vea and his representation have requested a trade from the Buccaneers, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Vea is entering the final year of his current contract that is set to pay him $18 million in 2026, and his AAV of $17.75 million on said deal is 19th among interior defensive linemen. At 30 years old last season, he logged 760 defensive snaps (second most in a campaign in his career) en route to 34 tackles, including 4.5 sacks, two pass defenses and one fumble recovery across 17 regular-season games. After Vea staged a hold-in at mandatory minicamp in mid-June, he's slated to report to training camp Tuesday with fellow Bucs veterans, per Greg Auman of Fox Sports.

Vea did not practice this week as a minicamp hold-in, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Vea is entering the last year of his contract, during which he is scheduled to receive up to $17 million in non-guaranteed funds for play throughout the 2026 season. The defensive tackle played a full season's worth of games for the first time since 2019, and with consistent production leading the defensive line, he likely feels he is entitled to an extension before putting his body on the line another year. If Vea continues to hold in without a trade or extension, Elijah Simmons could develop an increased role in the Buccaneers defense heading into the 2026 regular season.

Vea recorded 34 tackles (16 solo), including 4.5 sacks, two defensed passes and one fumble recovery across 17 regular-season games in 2025.
The mammoth defensive tackle logged a whopping 760 snaps on defense while playing a full season's worth of games for the first time since 2019. Vea still saw a drop in his sack production after recording a career-high 7.0 QB takedowns in 2024, while his tackle tally was also his lowest over the last three seasons. Nevertheless, Vea remained a key cog on the Buccaneers' defensive front, and he remains under contract through the 2026 season at a cap hit of $22.2 million, per Spotrac.

Vea may have tweaked his back during the Buccaneers' Week 10 loss to the Patriots, when he posted two tackles (one solo) while playing 54 snaps (48 on defense, six on special teams). Vea (foot) did not participate in Thursday's practice.
Vea was able to participate in Wednesday's walkthrough, so the foot injury he's working through may be a recent issue rather than one he picked up during Monday's loss to the Lions. Friday's practice report will provide more clarity on Vea's chances of playing Sunday against the Saints. If he's not cleared to play, then Elijah Simmons, C.J. Brewer and Greg Gaines (toe) would be in line to see more snaps on the defensive line in Week 8.
