Johnson reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Johnson was elevated for Sunday's Week 2 game against the Texans as a contingency plan in the event Joe Burrow was forced to sit out with a back injury. Burrow played and Johnson was declared inactive for the contest. Johnson is eligible to be elevated two more times before he must be signed to the active roster to participate in games.

With Joe Burrow (back) listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Texans, Johnson has a shot to be active. The quarterback will either be the backup to Joe Flacco if Burrow cannot suit up, or he will be inactive if Burrow is good to go.

Josh Johnson: Added to Bengals' practice squad
Johnson agreed to join the Bengals' practice squad Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Cincinnati opted to keep Joe Burrow and Joe Flacco as its sole quarterbacks on the 53-man roster heading into the regular season, but Johnson -- who was with the club for training camp and the preseason -- will remain in the organization as a depth option at the position on the practice squad. The 40-year-old signal-caller has been part of 14 different NFL teams over his long career and spent all of 2025 with the Commanders, appearing in five games and completing 34 of 54 pass attempts for 372 yards and a 1:2 TD:INT to go with 55 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Josh Johnson: Released by Cincy
Johnson was released by the Bengals on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The veteran of 14 NFL teams signed with Cincinnati in March to compete for a backup role behind Joe Burrow, but he found himself the odd man out next to fellow veteran signing Joe Flacco and developmental prospect Sean Clifford. Johnson saw action in five regular-season games and on 137 offensive snaps for Washington last year, completing 63 percent of his passes for 372 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Bengals' Josh Johnson: Continuing career in Cincy
The Bengals signed Johnson to a contract Saturday.
Johnson will turn 40 in mid-May, but he's not yet ready to hang up his cleats. This will be his third stint with the Bengals, who are one of 14 teams he's spent time with during his NFL career. Johnson should have a path to working as the backup to QB Joe Burrow, as Sean Clifford is the only other QB currently signed to Cincinnati's roster following the departure of Jake Browning to Tampa Bay.

Commanders' Josh Johnson: Passable in win
Johnson completed 14 of 22 passes for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Eagles. He added nine rushes for 45 yards with an additional score and a lost fumble.
Johnson drew his second consecutive start in the absence of both Jayden Daniels (elbow) and Marcus Mariota (hand). He effectively managed the offense for most of the game and orchestrated a pair of touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, which he capped off with a two-yard passing score and a one-yard rushing touchdown, to give the Commanders the win. Johnson will become a free agent this offseason, though retirement is also a possibility as he just concluded his 11th season and is set to turn 40 in May.
