  • Marcus Gilbert: Announces retirement

Gilbert, who opted out of the 2020 season, announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday.

The Cardinals traded a sixth-round pick for Gilbert during the 2019 offseason, but he subsequently tore his ACL and never appeared in a game for the team. Previously, the 2011 second-round pick logged time in 88 games with the Steelers, 87 of which were starts. Gilbert's retirement won't shake up Arizona's offensive line much, as the team already has re-signed 2020 starting right tackle Kelvin Beachum.

  • Cardinals' Marcus Gilbert: Opts out of 2020 campaign

Gilbert plans to opt out of the 2020 season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Gilbert, who had been working his way back from an ACL tear that he suffered last September, was projected to work for the Cardinals as a high-end backup at the offensive tackle position.

  • Cardinals' Marcus Gilbert: Shifts to NFI list

The Cardinals placed Gilbert on the active/non-football illness list Sunday, Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com reports.

In addition to his undisclosed illness, Gilbert is working his way back from an ACL tear suffered last September. The Cardinals stand to rely on him as a high-end backup at the offensive tackle position when healthy.

  • Cardinals' Marcus Gilbert: Back with Cards

Gilbert (knee) has signed a one-year contract to return to the Cardinals, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.

Gilbert tore his right ACL last September, but when healthy, Weinfuss notes that the 6-foot-6, 330-pounder, who was drafted by Pittsburgh 63rd overall back in 2001 -- "can be a very effective right tackle." Additionally, Weinfuss suggests that the team's re-signing of Gilbert makes using a high draft pick on a tackle less look likely for the Cardinals.

  • Cardinals' Marcus Gilbert: On track for training camp

Gilbert (knee) expects to resume practicing in some capacity during OTAs and ramp up his activity for training camp, Kyle Odegard of the Cardinals' official site reports.

Gilbert suffered a torn ACL just days before the 2019 regular season began, and he missed the entire campaign as a result. The veteran right tackle has appeared in just 12 games across the last three years. An impending unrestricted free agent, Gilbert expects to be fully healthy in time to kick off the 2020 season and said he would "love" to re-sign with the Cardinals.
